Week 6: at Dallas Cowboys

All RB vs DAL

FBG says: Neutral matchup. At the moment, the Jaguars simply can't count on Leonard Fournette. Between his long-nagging ankle/foot woes and his recurring hamstring issue, Fournette's body simply isn't cooperating with his NFL plans. He'll almost certainly sit this Sunday, leaving T.J. Yeldon as the workhorse again. Yeldon is serviceable in the lead role, averaging 4.37 yards per rush this season. But he's not nearly the powerful grinder Fournette is, nor does he boast the same breakaway speed. Owner of a career 4.04 mark, Yeldon is somewhat of a plodder unless escorted into the open field. The dip is certainly felt in this offense - It's why Blake Bortles keeps throwing 50+ passes in these games. The team would love to have Fournette's game-controlling ability back as soon as possible. Yeldon projects decently week-to-week, but rarely as a world-beater, especially behind a banged-up offensive line that just lost its second left tackle of the young season. Change-of-pace back Corey Grant went on injured reserve this week, leaving only new signee Jamaal Charles as backfield depth. Charles is a big name, but looked gassed last year and likely won't get much run. Yeldon will have plenty of opportunity Sunday, assuming game flow, but his level efficiency will be anyone's guess. The Dallas run defense is simply a different unit without oft-injured middle linebacker Sean Lee. Dating back to last season, they've allowed opposing runners just 3.55 yards per rush with Lee in the lineup, but 4.63 over 7 games without him. Still, there's hope on the horizon as Lee prepares to sit yet again in Week 6. Rookie Leighton Vander Esch has been outstanding in the run game, and he's been a full-timer with Lee out, playing 130 of 134 snaps over the last 2 weeks. Vander Esch is explosive in addressing the run and reliable at bringing it down, and he was a big reason neither Alfred Blue nor Deshaun Watson was able to break any gains of note last week. In all, this unit definitely takes a step down without Lee, but not a massive one. They're still not a particularly easy task.

Recent Game Summaries

2018 Week 5 vs KC (1 / 8 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Grant appeared to roll his ankle on his only touch of the day. Donte Moncrief - Moncrief had a decently productive albeit unimpactful day. He continues drawing a significant amount of deep targets that are neither open nor catchable throws He got redzone backshoulder fade target that he got his hands on but could not come down with the catch through contact

2018 Week 4 vs NYJ (1 / 5 / 0 rush, 3 / 2 / 12 / 0 rec)

Grant played only a handful of snaps even after Fournette went down and was not a factor in the game.

2018 Week 3 vs TEN (6 / 11 / 0 rush, 2 / 1 / -1 / 0 rec)

With Leonard Fournette out again, Grant and Yeldon continued to split duties in the backfield. He ran a fake punt on second drive of the game, but the Titans were ready for it and stopped it. He is not effective as an inside runner from under center. . At this point, Grant is a manufactured touch player who does not offer much as a runner.

2018 Week 2 vs NE (4 / 13 / 0 rush, 7 / 6 / 56 / 0 rec)

Grant rotated with Yeldon on the day and was extremely effective as a receiver out of the backfield in this game. He checked in on the first drive and on his first snap caught a check down after play action and got upfield for 15 yards and a first down. He had a huge 3rd and 7 conversion in the redzone on a Texas route out of the backfield later in the game. He received the few carries the Jaguars ran from under center (they played in shotgun most of the game) but none of his carries were especially productive. While Grant has been a manufactured touch player to this point, he did make some nice plays within the flow of the offense in this game.

2018 Week 1 vs NYG (1 / 3 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Entered the game on the first drive in a split backfield set with Fournette. Ran a quick swing route and made the catch for a couple of yards. Really only used as a decoy in the second half, with his occasional snaps mainly leading to play action fakes. The Jaguars used him as a second RB in their two back shotgun package on just one play. He simply was not involved in the gameplan from a manufactured touch standpoint from this week and got almost no traditional RB looks even after Fournette went down. His usage will be interesting to monitor, especially next week against New England - whom he burned on manufactured touches in the teams' AFC Championship Game meeting last year.

Our View: Grant is hitting free agency in 2019 and should be healthy by that time. The Jaguars will turn to Brandon Wilds as the primary backup to T.J. Yeldon while their usual starter Leonard Fournette continues to miss time with a hamstring injury.
