Week 7: at Atlanta Falcons

All RB vs ATL

FBG says: Neutral matchup. After missing week six against the San Francisco 49ers, the Los Angeles Rams are optimistic that running back Todd Gurley will be able to return to action here in week seven. Gurley's 2019 production has been substantially worse than his 2018 production, in part due to deteriorating health and abilities on Gurley's part, and in part due to horrific offensive line play from the bruisers up front. Gurley averages just 4.2 yards-per-carry in 2019 compared to 4.9 yards-per-carry last season. Los Angeles' offensive line has been one of the worst in the NFL so far this season. Aside from All-Pro left tackle Andre Whitworth, the Rams' offensive line is littered with below-average run-blockers. This unit's troubles in pass protection have been well-documented given Jared Goff's struggles, but the inadequacy run blocking is equally egregious. Through six games, the Rams have yet to produce a single 100-yard rusher in 2019, and this weekend's matchup with the Atlanta Falcons projects to be another difficult matchup to break that trend. While the Atlanta Falcons have allowed sizable rushing totals through the first six games of the 2019 season, but those are primarily a product of high-volume rushing attacks driven by the score during the Falcons' 1-5 start. On the season, the Falcons rank 20th in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns allowed. However, Atlanta has allowed just 3.9 yards-per-carry, the 7th-best mark in the NFL. Atlanta's strong run defense can be attributed to a balanced unit with standout players at all three levels. On the defensive line, Grady Jarrett is one of the NFL's best interior defensive linemen. Alongside Jarrett, Tyeler Davison has taken his game to new heights in his first season as a member of the Atlanta Falcons. Then, at linebacker, Deion Jones and De'Vondre Campbell both grade as above-average run stoppers. Both players possess elite speed for the position, and Campbell's size makes for a matchup nightmare in the trenches. While Atlanta's secondary struggles to defend the pass, safety Ricardo Allen has made a name for himself as one of the NFL's best run-stopping defensive backs when healthy. Following a season-ending knee injury early in 2018, Allen has returned to action in 2019 as the same run-stopper he was in years past. The Los Angeles Rams will have a long day at the office if they set out with the goal of establishing their rushing attack early in the game against Atlanta's stout run defense. The Rams will likely go another week without recording a 100-yard rusher barring any unexpected, explosive plays out of their backfield.
