Week 15: vs Houston Texans

All RB vs HOU

FBG says: Bad matchup. The Jets started off the season with a lot of depth at running back. Isaiah Crowell and Bilal Powell formed a potent 1-2 punch that ranked 13th in the league in rushing with 121.9 yards per game heading into November. All that changed when Powell was put on injured reserve following a scary neck injury and Crowell was thrust into the lead position. Following his 219 yard performance against the Broncos in week five, Crowell averaged 32 rushing yards per game in his next six games before finally breaking through again for a 98 yard game against the Titans in week 13. He was injured in his last week's game against the Bills and finished with two carries for five yards. Crowell was seen in a walking boot at Monday's practice and is questionable at best for Saturday's game against the Texans. McGuire stepped in for Crowell and rushed for 60 yards on 17 carries, including the game-winner against Buffalo, but he was also injured after rolling his ankle. He was limited in Tuesday's practice and is currently questionable for Saturday's game. Trenton Cannon, the Jets third-string running back has also been limited at practice with a toe injury, so it is safe to say that the Jets are in serious trouble against the Texans. Their offensive line is overmatched to start, and without a stable of healthy running backs, it is going to be a long day for the Jets offense. The Texans own the fifth-best rushing defense in the NFL, allowing only 88.2 rushing yards per game. They have wreaked havoc over the last three games especially, limiting opposing teams to only 62 yards per game, which is second best in the league over that span. Last week they held the Colts to 50 yards rushing, but ultimately lost the game 24-21 due to TY Hilton going off for 199 receiving yards. JJ Watt has been nearly unstoppable when on the field, and his presence makes the job of the defensive line so much easier. This week the Texans defense faces off against a Jets running game that is in shambles, with Isaiah Crowell (foot), Elijah McGuire (ankle) and Trenton Cannon (toe) all being limited in practice. Crowell was in a walking boot at Monday's practice, and his status for Saturday's game does not look promising. The Texans run defense has the clear advantage in this game, and you can expect a repeat of last week's performance against the Colts.

Recent Game Summaries

2018 Week 14 vs BUF (5 / 3 / 1 rush, 1 / 1 / 4 / 0 rec)

Cannon didn't do much with the carries he got, usually taking a loss and going down with initial contact. He did have a nice 4-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but in that case mostly succeeded because of solid blocking up front.

2018 Week 13 vs TEN (4 / 18 / 0 rush, 1 / 1 / 7 / 0 rec)

Once thought to be headed back to the special teams unit with Elijah McGuire returning, Cannon has been more involved than anticipated. Sunday against Tennessee was no different, as he saw just two less carries and the same amount of catches as McGuire, while accruing a better yards per carry. The undersized rookie showed some decent burst getting through the holes the offensive line opened for him and occasionally made some tacklers miss. He also got the nod in relief of Isaiah Crowell on a key fourth quarter carry, but failed to get any traction. The Jets punted and the Titans turned that punt into a touchdown drive.

2018 Week 12 vs NE (0 / 0 / 0 rush, 1 / 1 / -3 / 0 rec)

With Elijah McGuire back and Isaiah Crowell healthy, Cannon is relegated to occasional mop-up duty or special teams action. On Sunday he saw no carries and only one target which he caught behind the line of scrimmage where he was tackled for a loss.

2018 Week 10 vs BUF (4 / 30 / 0 rush, 4 / 1 / 5 / 0 rec)

Cannon actually had one of his better games, though the bulk of his production came on one run which happened in the third quarter against a team which was just looking to prevent a big pass play, and so wasn't jamming the box. He showed some speed and elusiveness on that run, but has not shown that much in his chances this season.

2018 Week 9 vs MIA (0 / 0 / 0 rush, 1 / 1 / 15 / 0 rec)

With Elijah McGuire back, Cannon saw his workload cut even thinner than it usually is, with just one catch on the day in the middle of the fourth quarter.

2018 Week 8 vs CHI (6 / 10 / 0 rush, 4 / 3 / 12 / 0 rec)

Cannon played OK, but didn't do anything to make anyone think Elijah McGuire won't take the backup role from him this week or the next. Like Isaiah Crowell, Cannon saw no help from the offensive line when running the ball and couldn't create on his own. He did get some work receiving the ball in the second half, when the Jets all but abandoned the run.

2018 Week 7 vs MIN (2 / 4 / 0 rush, 5 / 4 / 69 / 0 rec)

The rookie was Sam Darnold's leading receiver and overall leading yard-accumulator, which should tell you all you need to know about Sunday's game. Cannon worked as Isaiah Crowell's backup once Bilal Powell went down with a neck injury, and showed good hands on his receptions, but very little in his few carries.

2018 Week 1 vs DET (6 / 15 / 0 rush, 1 / 1 / 6 / 0 rec)

Cannon came in when the game was pretty much over and performed relatively well, though he didn't have the success the other two Jets backs had. A somewhat undersized player, Cannon isn't going to drag defenders very far, and has to make his yards by getting into open space which was not easy to come by when he was in the game. He was targeted once for six yards and showed good hands on the play.

Jets | Week 14 injury report for NYJ (Fri Dec 7, 04:29 PM) - New York Jets WR Robby Anderson (ankle), RB Isaiah Crowell (toe), TE Jordan Leggett (knee) and CB Buster Skrine (shoulder) were listed as limited participants for practice Friday, Dec. 7 and each is considered questionable for Week 14 against the Buffalo Bills. OT Kelvin Beachum (knee), RB Trenton Cannon (hamstring), CB Morris Claiborne (shoulder, neck), QB Sam Darnold (foot), WR Quincy Enunwa (ankle), LB Jordan Jenkins (shoulder), LB Darron Lee (not injury related), C Spencer Long (knee, finger, illness), QB Josh McCown (back), LB Kevin Pierre-Louis (thumb), WR Andre Roberts (foot) and TE Eric Tomlinson (elbow) practiced in full and each are off the injury report ahead of Sunday's game.

Our View: Anderson and Crowell should play but both have unfavorable matchups at Buffalo this week. The Jets offense will get Sam Darnold back this week, but the Bills defense destroyed them in Week 10 and they are the best D/ST play in this AFC Least matchup.
