Week 11: at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
FBG says: Bad matchup. The Saints' ground game remains one of football's most imposing units. Alvin Kamara's Week 10 return was uneventful, with just 24 yards over 4 carries as the Saints shifted early to the pass. Latavius Murray wasn't able to get anything going, either (5 for 12), but there's always reason for optimism here. Kamara has now played two full games with Drew Brees under center; in the first, he turned 13 attempts into 97 yards. Brees' presence does wonders for the Saints' ground game, keeping linebackers and defensive backs on their heels and out of the box more often. Kamara and Murray also benefit from an elite offensive line, currently ranked first by Footballguys' Matt Bitonti with a coveted A++ run-blocking grade. Even if left guard Andrus Peat can't suit up, there are no real concerns for this deep group. They consistently do a fine job winning at the point of attack and giving the runners wide lanes to exploit. And when a talent like Kamara is escorted onto the second level, anything can happen. The Tampa Bay run defense, one of 2019's most surprising units, continues to operate at a near-shutdown level. They've smothered Christian McCaffrey twice (68 yards on 38 carries), and they've limited a handful of other upper-tier backs along the way. That list includes this week's lead opponent, Alvin Kamara, who managed just 62 on 16 attempts in Week 5. With a swarming front led by nose tackle Vita Vea, runners simply aren't given much room at the point of attack. Vea doesn't just tie up blocking - he fights through double-teams and makes his share of plays on the run. His breakout has had a ripple effect, making life easier for the rest of the front seven. That said, there have been a few noticeable lapses lately. Derrick Henry and Chris Carson have created chunk runs in recent matchups, exploiting missed assignments by rookie Devin White and others. Overall, though, this is a strong unit and a difficult fantasy matchup. Kamara and Latavius Murray are dynamic runners behind a mauling front line, and they're fully capable of creating chunk runs. But they'll have to rely heavily on their open-field skills to produce in this restrictive matchup.
