Week 15: vs New Orleans Saints

All RB vs NO

FBG says: Tough matchup. Christian McCaffrey is truly in the midst of a dazzling stretch of running. After a sluggish start to his NFL career, he's now averaging 5.0 yards per rush over his last 22 games, scoring 9 times on the ground over that span. Last Sunday he was held below 4.0 for the first time since Week 8, but still managed 3.9 and found the end zone twice. He's quickly developed into one of football's most dynamic weapons out of the backfield and has bucked his rookie-year reputation as a mere change-of-pace guy. In addition to his receiving greatness, McCaffrey is running well inside and leading the Panthers ground game effectively, in spite of an offensive line that's been anything cut consistent. It's plummeted down our Matt Bitonti's rankings and now sits 29th in football, with a C+ run-blocking grade. McCaffrey is balanced by quarterback Cam Newton, the only other Panther to figure into the attack at all most weeks. Nursing a shoulder injury, Newton isn't running quite as much as we're used to seeing (23 rushes over the last 5 weeks). But he remains a powerful presence, both up the middle and in the option game, and is always a threat to punch in a short touchdown. Seemingly overnight, the Saints run defense has blossomed into one of the NFL's stingiest units. A year after allowing 4.4 yards per rush (28th in the league) and 112 per game (16th), they're giving up just 3.6 (third) and 78 (first) here in 2018. In fact, over the last 4 weeks, running backs are managing just 3.1 per carry, and only Ezekiel Elliott has topped 53 over that span. Not enough has been said of Sheldon Rankins' breakout, but he's holding down the nose and dominating interior lines at a Pro Bowl level. He's a huge reason that this unit, which is still dragged down a bit by mediocre linebacker play, has been so successful. Opposing runners, often hampered by bad game flow and out of rhythm, are finding very little success up the middle. Christian McCaffrey is quick and explosive but will have his work cut out for him finding room this week. Expect him and Cam Newton to test the edges, where the Saints have their weaknesses, far more often than the interior.

With Sony Michel going down with injury, Barner saw several touches. He wasn't able to do a ton with them, but the important note is whether the Patriots sign another RB. If not, he will see a role while Michel is out.
