From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Dec 2): Ronald Jones loss of playing time because of a missed blitz pickup was Barber's gain as he scored twice against the Jaguars. He'll be worth a desperation play look against the Colts.

Week 14: vs Indianapolis Colts

All RB vs IND

FBG says: Tough matchup. Just when the Tampa Bay backfield was thought to have been settling out with Ronald Jones at the helm, they throw another curveball by giving Peyton Barber 17 carries to just six for Jones in last week's blowout victory. The split between Jones and Barber has been rather unpredictable all season long as there have been games in which one out-carries the other by double-digits on multiple occasions. Neither running back has been particularly productive though, and this Tampa Bay rushing offense ranks 22nd in the league with 96.2 rushing yards per game and a below-average 3.7 yards per attempt. Barber has exceeded 4.0 yards per carry just one time this season, while Jones has done it only three times--including just one game of more than 3.7 yards per rush attempt in his last nine outings. While predicting who will have the hot hand in a given week remains a challenge, the Tampa Bay offensive line has been and will continue to be a concern that ultimately limits the upside of this rushing offense. The Colts rushing defense had their worst game of the season against the run last week as Derrick Henry put up 149 yards and a touchdown. This was the first time any running back had exceeded 90 rushing yards against a Colts defense that has played excellently to have held running backs to just the fifth-fewest fantasy points per game on the season. Despite the stats from last week, this defense still played relatively well and has the personnel to shut down opposing backfields. Linebacker Darius Leonard, in particular, had a great game last week and has been a game-changer for this defense since returning from injury. This defensive line does have a lack of depth, but their starters have been solid and should have the edge over Tampa Bay's mediocre offensive line. Look for the Colts defense to bounce back in this one as the Buccaneers running backs are in for a challenge.

Recent Game Summaries

2019 Week 13 vs JAX (17 / 44 / 2 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Barber entered the game after Ronald Jones on the Bucs second offensive drive. He exploded through a gap off right tackle for a 15 yard touchdown(also his longest) run at the end of the 1st. Barber punched another touchdown in from the 1 yard line on the next offensive drive after Dare Ogunbowale got stuffed on his attempt. The Bucs continued to feed Barber after that, and he led the backfield with 17 carries to Jones' 6. Barber racked up 44 yards and was not targeted in the passing game.

2019 Week 12 vs ATL (11 / 32 / 0 rush, 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Barber contributed little in a clear backup roll to Jones this week. He worked into the rotation late in the 1st quarter, logging his first carry on the third drive of the game. Barber scraped together 32 yards on 11 carries and could not secure his only target.

2019 Week 11 vs NO (0 / 0 / 0 rush, 2 / 2 / 11 / 1 rec)

Barber, like Jones, did quite literally nothing on the ground(0 carries) with Tampa Bay playing from behind. He did have a nice touchdown catch on a 7 yard stick route from Winston late in the 2nd quarter.

2019 Week 10 vs ARI (11 / 43 / 1 rush, 1 / 1 / 4 / 0 rec)

Barber took a backseat to Jones for the first part of the game, but was featured on the final drive after Jones inexplicably fumbled the ball without contact in the 4th quarter. Barber punched a late touchdown in as the 4th quarter ticked away after Mike Evans drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone, setting the Bucs up at the 1 yard line with about a minute left in the game. Barber's longest run of the day was a 17 yard gain on a nice draw play in the 2nd quarter that Barber broke to the right sideline for extra yardage. He had another impressive romp off right tackle late on the final drive, before scoring his short touchdown run. Barber had a better per-carry average than Jones, though Jones significantly outplayed him in the passing game. This backfield situation is still pretty murky.

2019 Week 9 vs SEA (4 / 15 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

It looks as though the torch has finally been passed, as Jones got the start this week and dominated the snap count. Barber managed 15 yards on just 4 carries and was not targeted in the passing game. Jones and passing down specialist Ogunbowale both rushed for touchdowns and got more work in the passing game.

2019 Week 8 vs TEN (10 / 20 / 0 rush, 3 / 1 / 8 / 0 rec)

Barber(10 carries) continues to be locked into an unproductive time share with Ronald Jones(11 carries), as he ground out 20 yards total. Barber got stuffed on a goal line carry early in the 1st quarter after Evans set the offense up inside the 5 yard line with a PI flag. Barber nearly scored on a red zone screen pass that he took down to the Titans' two yard line in the 3rd quarter, his only catch of the day on 3 targets. He was stuffed on a 4th and 1 attempt late in the 4th quarter.

2019 Week 6 vs CAR (8 / 28 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Barber got the start and racked up 8 ineffective carries early in the contest, but he was quickly phased out of the gameplan as the Bucs fell behind. Though he had twice as many totes, both Jones and Ogunbowale got goal line carries and converted them into touchdowns. Barber was not targeted in the passing game.

2019 Week 5 vs NO (8 / 32 / 1 rush, 1 / 1 / -1 / 0 rec)

Barber got the nod in the backfield at the beginning of the 1st and 3rd quarters and found the end zone once, but Ronald Jones finished the day with a couple more touches and a slightly better stat line. Barber was able to punch a touchdown in from the 2 yard line in the 3rd quarter. He lost a yard on a checkdown pass from Winston, his only target of the day.

2019 Week 4 vs LAR (9 / 19 / 1 rush, 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Barber capped the opening drive off with a touchdown after Chris Godwin was brought down at the four yard line, but quickly relinquished backfield duties to Jones, who was featured almost exclusively in the second half. Barber got stuffed on his first attempt, but scored off left tackle on his second attempt. Barber got another goal line carry from the 3 yard line in the 2nd quarter, but couldn't convert as Chris Godwin eventually caught a touchdown pass to seal the drive. He finished the day with just 9 carries and no catches on one target.

2019 Week 3 vs NYG (13 / 48 / 0 rush, 2 / 2 / 7 / 0 rec)

Barber got the start but was outplayed by his backfield mate Jones. The two logged the same number of touches, but Jones performed considerably better and the Bucs leaned on him more in the second half. Barber was only able to muster 48 yards on the ground with 13 carries, while Jones picked up 80 with just one more tote. Barber caught both targets on checkdown passes out of the backfield, but only managed 7 yards.

2019 Week 2 vs CAR (23 / 82 / 1 rush, 1 / 1 / 7 / 0 rec)

Barber looked solid in this one, making some impressive cuts at the line of scrimmage as he gashed the Panthers defense between the tackles several times. He scored in the third quarter, plowing through the secondary after carrying the ball through the middle of the offensive line untouched. The offensive line got a great push on the play and Barber did his part at the second level. Barber made an impressive catch on a low pass from Winston in the 2nd quarter while leaking out of the backfield, spinning away from a tackle as he collected the ball and dodged a second defender on his way to extra yards. Barber dominated snaps and backfield touches, with the other two halfbacks combining for just 5 touches.

2019 Week 1 vs SF (8 / 33 / 0 rush, 4 / 2 / 12 / 0 rec)

Starting halfback Barber bounced a 14 yard run off left tackle in the 1st quarter, his longest gain of the day. He didn't do much else on the ground. He was the target on Winston's second interception of the day, splitting out wide right to run a slant route. Winston overthrew him badly, but coach Arians later blamed the play on Barber's route-running. Barber caught a halfback screen in the 1st quarter for a short gain. He caught another pass out of the backfield in the third quarter and fumbled, but managed to recover the ball. Ronald Jones came on strong in the second half, ripping off runs up the middle as he out-carried Barber 13-8 on the night.
