Week 7: vs New Orleans Saints

All RB vs NO

FBG says: Tough matchup. The Bears have definitely disappointed thus far with their run game, and things won't get easier with their top blocker, guard Kyle Long, on injured reserve. Long had bounced on and off the field for most of the year with a hip ailment, but the team shelved him officially this week. It's hard to see how they'll open holes for struggling rookie David Montgomery without Long on the interior. Montgomery is taking on great volume (16 rushes per game since Week 2), but has yet to generate much with it (just 3.3 yards apiece over that span). He's not a particularly dynamic runner, with just 2 runs of 10+ yards, and will need creases to generate real yardage. He would also benefit from the passing game taking a step forward. At least Mike Davis appears to be out of the picture, and Tarik Cohen still isn't utilized much; Montgomery should get all the opportunity he needs to turn things around. This attack is being placed squarely on the rookie's shoulders, and not under the best of circumstances. Coach Matt Nagy will need to get creative to kick-start it. The Saints run defense continues to fly a bit under the radar as one of football's most dominant units. Dating back to Week 2, they've allowed just a single rusher - Leonard Fournette last Sunday - to top 65 ground yards, and Fournette needed 20 carries to do it. Along the way, they've also shut down the likes of Todd Gurley (16 for 63), Chris Carson (15 for 53), and Ezekiel Elliott (18 for 35). They've been buoyed by the return of tackle Sheldon Rankins, who's been solid over three games back from injury. He and David Onyemata continue to occupy interior blockers while the playmakers roam the field behind them. The linebackers can be beaten in pursuit, though safety Vonn Bell remains an underrated star against the run, consistently making big plays in the box. All in all, this is never a strong matchup to run against. If the Cowboys and Seahawks can't grind things out, it's unlikely the Bears' banged-up ground attack will be able to.
