Summary

Jamaal Williams has had an up and down start to his NFL career, looking like a lead-footed plodder half the time and an effective jack of all trades running back the other half. He was given the chance to carry the load for the Packers the first two weeks of the 2018 season, but failed to make much of an impact, averaging 3.4 yards per carry on 31 attempts. While his teammate Jones has the highest yards per carry in NFL history with at least 200 attempts, Williams has averaged only 3.7 yards per carry through his first two seasons, playing in the same scheme with the same offensive lineman. Williams does not have an elite skill to hang his hat on, so it easy for him to get bottled up at the line of scrimmage if opposing defenses concentrate on stopping the run. Williams is at his best as a receiver on third downs, averaging 9.1 yards per catch on 52 receptions over the last two seasons. He is solid but unspectacular, which isn't going to cut it when the competition has the elite raw skills of a guy like Jones. He does provide the Packers with depth at the running back position and can be effective as a #2 option, but the days of this being a competition between the two backs came to an end last season.
