Summary

While 2018 was supposed to be a big season for Kenyan Drake as he took over the backfield, former head coach Adam Gase never seemed to want to rely on him, and his stats dropped in nearly every category save touchdowns, which increased by 1, and receptions. Drake was basically a change of pace back who caught a lot of balls. His 73 targets was the second highest total on the team and his 477 yards was the third highest total. With a new coach and new offensive coordinator in town, Drake has another chance to take the lead back job, and he says he's been hard at work studying other backs like James White, who new OC Chad O'Shea used to coach. On the downside, there's a big question mark under center and it's hard to say if either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Josh Rosen will keep defenses from stacking eight men in the box to contain Drake. Cardinals | David Johnson could be traded (Sun Feb 16, 10:17 AM) - The Arizona Cardinals could trade RB David Johnson during the offseason if they decide to give impending free-agent RB Kenyan Drake the franchise tag or sign him to a contract extension, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Our View: Who in the world would want that contract? Cardinals GM Steve Keim has already said that cutting Johnson is 'not an option' due to the salary cap ramifications. Johnson has a 2020 cap number of $14.1 million and there is $16.2 million remaining in dead money.

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake has talked deal with Cards (Fri Feb 14, 03:42 PM) - Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent RB Kenyan Drake has had some contract talks with the Cardinals since the end of the season, and general manager Steve Keim said he has told Drake that the team wants him back.

Our View: This seems like a foregone conclusion. Drake had fantastic success as the Cardinals starter and they should continue forward with him as the lead back. Due to salary cap restraints, the team is also likely to keep David Johnson around for the 2020 season.
