Cecil Shorts is having an early set back to start out the 2014 season as he has sustained a Grade 2 hamstring strain in Jaguars practice. Injury concerns have already been a big part of Shorts career and this will be another injury that could likely affect Shorts leading up the start of the season. Shorts is also entering a contract year and staying healthy and performing well are going to be his top priorities this year. The Jaguars have brought in some additional tools and weapons on offense which should help Shorts be able to have more room on the field as he won't be the only guy on the team that defenders are worried about. Shorts had 66 receptions for 777 yards and 3 touchdowns in 13 games in 2013. With the drafting of Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson early and the potential of Ace Sanders in the slot and Mike Brown as a quality 4th or 5th option, the field should be a lot more open for Cecil Shorts in 2014. He is playing in a contract year and if he can stay healthy the door is open for a 1,000+ yard season.
2013 Game Summaries
Week 1 - Shorts was Gabbert's target on his first interception. He and the quarterback weren't on the same page as Shorts ran down the sideline as Gabbert threw anticipating a post route. On his second target, Shorts adjusted very well to a poorly thrown pass from Gabbert, but Brandon Flowers wrestled it from his grasp as he went to the ground. Shorts' next target didn't come until the fourth quarter, when Gabbert rocketed a screen pass to him causing him to miss what should have been an easy reception. Shorts couldn't reel in a tough reception soon after as Brandon Flowers was all over him on a curl route. Shorts and Gabbert finally connected on a curl route when he found some space against Flowers on third and two. Gabbert went straight back to Shorts on a very similar play with the same result. Shorts couldn't reel in a diving reception on a short out route two plays later. Shorts caught a 24 yard backshoulder pass from Henne late in the game on the second attempt. Shorts insisted he was getting open after the game, saying "The film doesn't lie. They weren't taking me out"
Week 2 - On the Jaguars' first third down of the day, Shorts couldn't catch a fastball from Henne as he ran an underneath route well short of the line of scrimmage. He should have brought the ball in, but it wasn't an easy reception with the heat on the pass and a defender on his back. Shorts was the target on the Jaguars' second third down, but this time he converted with a catch on an out route where he was wide open. A few plays later, on first and five, Henne tried to find Shorts after rolling out on a bootleg. Shorts was well covered on a short out route though as Tracy Porter knocked the ball away. On first down soon after, Henne tried to find Shorts on a quick in route underneath. Shorts fell down however and Henne could easily have been intercepted. Shorts finally made an indent into the Raiders' secondary on a bubble screen early in the second quarter. He caught the ball before sprinting down the sideline for a 17 yard gain. Henne tried to find Shorts again soon after on a curl route that would have gone for a first down, but the quarterback's pass was high and wild. Shorts' first reception of the second half came on second and 15, when he caught a short crossing route underneath. Shorts was clearly the Jaguars' primary receiver, however, the Jaguars' limited and cautious approach on offense meant his next reception came on a screen pass in the fourth quarter. He did well to gain four yards. Shorts' longest play of the day, a 22 yard reception, came down the sideline as he adjusted well to a back shoulder throw. Henne came back to Shorts with a similar pass on the next drive, the Jaguars' final one, but Shorts couldn't stay inbounds. On the very next play, the duo were able to connect as Shorts stayed in on the same pass play for a first down. Shorts followed that up with a 12 yard gain on a crossing route underneath. Henne found Shorts again on a five yard in route on the next play. He was tackled immediately.
Week 3 - Shorts' first target didn't come until late in the second quarter. He caught it, but he was out of bounds after running a comeback route to lose the defender. Shorts caught a slant on the very next play for a first down. Shorts caught a quick pass in the flat right in front of Richard Sherman. Shorts went straight out of bounds however for a very short gain. Henne went straight back to Shorts, when he caught an out route for six yards and a first down in front of Brandon Browner. Shorts tried to connect with Henne on a backshoulder throw in the third quarter, but Browner got the better of him deep down the sideline. Henne tried to find Shorts down the field again at the start of the fourth quarter, but he was tightly covered and the ball was thrown wide of the receiver. Shorts followed that up with a reception just short of the first down marker on third and long. After Jones-Drew converted the fourth down, Henne found Shorts on a backshoulder throw against Byron Maxwell down the sideline. Shorts came free down the seam and extended to catch a high pass from Henne. He made the reception, despite exposing himself to a blindside hit from the defensive back. Shorts then ran a curl route to come free for a first down and 14 yard gain. Shorts was clearly the Jaguars' best player, even though much of his good play came against the Seattle backups.
Week 4 - Shorts caught his first target on Gabbert's first throw. He ran a deep in route and caught an accurate pass between two defenders. Gabbert went straight back to Shorts on the next play, but the quarterback threw an inaccurate back shoulder throw that allowed Vontae Davis to take the pass away. Later in the first quarter, Shorts made an athletic reception on a deep curl route over the middle of the field. Gabbert tried to find Shorts in tight coverage on third and four early in the second quarter, but Davis tipped the ball again meaning the ball was ultimately caught by a Colts defender. Two drives later, Shorts caught a screen pass. He evaded two defenders at the line of scrimmage to turn a negative play into a short gain. Shorts followed that up with a successful slant route in the third quarter. Late in the third quarter, Shorts caught a bubble screen when he was tackled as the ball arrived. He drew a penalty on Vontae Davis on the very next play. Gabbert tried to find Shorts at the goalline on a slant route, but Greg Toler had good coverage and prevented the touchdown. Two plays later, Shorts couldn't come down with a high pass on a fade route. On the final drive of the game, Shorts caught a deep in route for a first down. Shorts followed that up on the next play with a similar catch.
Week 5 - On the Jaguars second third down of the day, Shorts beat a defender across the middle in man coverage for the first down. Shorts continued down the field with the ball for a big gain. Gabbert went back to Shorts on the next third down, but his quarterback threw the ball too far over the sideline for him to make a diving reception. Late in the first quarter, Shorts caught a bubble screen for 10 yards and a first down. When the Jaguars started a drive at their own one yard line, Shorts freed them on first down with a big catch down the sideline. He cleanly beat the defensive back and adjusted well to a slightly off pass. On third and short, Shorts caught a quick out from Chad Henne early in the fourth quarter. Shorts ran a slant in the end zone later on the same drive. Henne found him for the touchdown, but Shorts was forced to make a difficult reception after creating separation from the defensive back. On the next drive, when the Jaguars were facing a fourth and one, Shorts beat Janoris Jenkins down the sideline for what would have been a touchdown, but Henne missed him.
Week 6 - Shorts was in the team and looked to play, but he was unable to with a shoulder injury. Shorts has been a vitle piece of the offense this season so his loss was obviously huge.
Week 7 - Shorts was the first target on the Jaguars' very first play of the game. He couldn't get to a slightly overthrown pass from Chad Henne deep down the seam. A few plays later, Shorts adjusted well to a poorly thrown screen pass before running down the sideline for a five yard gain. Shorts caught another screen for eight yards early in the second quarter. Most of his touches came on screen passes or passes into the flat that he then turned into positive gains. Shorts dropped a touchdown wide open in the endzone very late in the fourth quarter.
Week 8 - Shorts converted the Jaguars' first third down. He ran between two defenders over the middle of the field for a first down on third and 7. Late in the second quarter, Shorts converted a third and 10 after the Jaguars rolled the pocket to his side of the field. Henne went back to Shorts two plays later with a pass underneath for nine yards. Immediately after, Shorts beat two tackles on an in route before running down the sideline and getting out of bounds. He immediately went to the sideline as he held his sore shoulder stiff to his side.
Week 10 - Shorts made an excellent catch for his first reception. Henne threw him a back-shoulder pass down the sideline and the receiver adjusted perfectly to pull it in against tight coverage. Shorts wasn't targeted again until late in the fourth quarter, when Patrick Peterson suffocated his space away down the sideline. In the fourth quarter, Shorts caught a quick bubble screen for a short gain. Shorts immediately caught another bubble screen for a first down after. Shorts caught a curl route in front of Joe Haden before breaking his tackle attempt for a first down. Although he struggled through a lot of this game, Shorts ran a perfect double move to lose Haden for the game winning touchdown in the final minute of the fourth quarter.
