Ed Dickson (43 targets for 25/273/1 receiving last season) joined the Panthers from Baltimore to provide an experienced #2 tight end. Dickson didn't wow in Baltimore last year after Dennis Pitta went down to injury, but he did provide a steady-if-unexciting presence on the field for Joe Flacco. Dickson's best season in the pros, with Baltimore during 2011, saw him convert 54/528/5 receiving out of 97 targets. Dickson has gotten it done at this level and is likely to see plenty of opportunities as the Panthers' #2 tight end (given the shallow pool of talent at wide receiver here in Carolina entering the 2014 season). It shouldn't be hard for him to exceed last year's numbers this season, but he is clearly the second-fiddle to Greg Olsen on this squad.

2013 Game Summaries
Week 1 - Ed Dickson was as putrid as Dallas Clark. Great players and teams make great plays and Dickson didnít take advantage of his opportunity to make tough plays. Early in the game Dickson had a potential third down conversion jarred free by Mike Adams. He then couldnít haul in a low pass to pick up a first down. Dickson also failed to make tough catch down the seam. Dickson did make a nice sideline catch in garbage time.
Week 2 - Ed Dickson dropped his only target on the first play of the game. Dickson is clearly a better blocker than Clark so he should continue to see more snaps but any passing game production should be considered a bonus until his hands become consistent.
Week 3 - Ed Dickson caught a pass that was nullified by penalty but remains uninvolved in the passing game.
Week 4 - Ed Dickson let a pass ricochet off his hands for an easy interception. Flacco rarely looks for Dickson and he has proved he is unreliable as a receiver
Week 5 - Ed Dickson made a nice catch with outstretched arms for a gain of 43. Dickson fought for extra yards and picked up another first down on his other catch.
Week 7 - Ed Dickson was hardly involved in the offense. Dickson converted a short third down off of play action. His other reception was against zone coverage when he was able to find the soft spot in the zone.
Week 10 - Ed Dickson caught 3 of his 4 targets and looked better than usual. Dickson had some nice blocks on outside runs and the only target he didnít convert into a first down was a terrible interception by Flacco into double coverage.
Week 11 - Ed Dickson played a solid game against the Bears. Flacco missed Dickson early in the flat but the two were on the same page most of the day. Dickson found the soft spot in zone coverage in-between the linebackers and the free safety on a curl route picking up 16 yards.
Week 12 - Ed Dickson kept himself available for Flacco as he escaped the pocket and Dickson was rewarded with a catch and first down. Off play action Tyrod Taylor hit Dickson in the hands but he dropped it. The following play Flacco came back to Dickson as an outlet receiver in the flat and Dickson ran angry. HE turned the dump off into a 27 yard gain after breaking several tackles. Flacco found Dickson on a quick hitch against the blitz and Dickson picked up another 12 yards.
Week 14 - Ed Dicksonís role is only going to shrink. The Ravens want to use him as a blocker but he canít block anyone in the Rrung game. Dickson caught a touchdown off of play action as the Vikings seemed to lose track of him. Dickson made a grab late in the game on a comeback route for a gain of 7.
Week 15 - Ed Dickson played the role of a reliable short throw target for Flacco. He ran a nice out route against man coverage to pick up a first down. Dickson caught passes in the flat and on a quick hitch over the middle.
Week 16 - Ed Dicksonís play has improved since Pittaís return. He hasnít dropped a pass and looked like one of Baltimoreís better pass catchers against the Patriots. Dickson made two nice grabs over the middle against the Patriots. The first was a comeback route against zone coverage to convert a third down. The second extended a drive on an out-breaking route facing man coverage. The Ravens donít call plays for Dickson but he is involved in the offense.
