New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston is interested in re-signing with the Saints this offseason. Winston likely would be the leading candidate for the starting quarterback job if he re-signs with the team.
Footballguys view: We'll see what kind of price these two sides can find. Winston could stay with the Saints to compete with Taysom Hill for the starting job in 2021. We're expected to hear that Drew Brees has officially retired in the near future. |

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston will compete for the starting quarterback job next season if he re-signs with the Saints and QB Drew Brees retires, according to head coach Sean Payton.
Footballguys view: If the Saints can find the cap room and the right number to bring Winston back, he could open the season as the starter. He'll have to compete with Taysom Hill in training camp if he does stay in New Orleans. |

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees completed 19-of-34 passes for 134 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in the NFC Divisional Round playoff game loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. QB Jameis Winston completed a 56-yard touchdown on a trick play to WR Tre'Quan Smith, who ended up with three grabs, 85 yards and two scores. RB Alvin Kamara rushed 18 times for 85 yards with three receptions and 20 yards on six targets. RB Ty Montgomery ran four times for 14 yards with one grab for 13 yards on his lone target. WR Emmanuel Sanders had six grabs for 48 yards on a game-high nine targets, and TE Jared Cook registered five receptions for 28 yards and a fumble lost.

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston is an unrestricted free agent after this season, but the Saints like what they've seen of him, according to a report Saturday, Jan. 16, and want to bring him back with the possibility that QB Drew Brees could retire this offseason.
Footballguys view: Winston did not start when the Saints lost Brees for a few games. Instead, Taysom Hill was the team's starter and Winston was his backup. We'll see if he wants to stay with the team or if another team gives him a clearer shot to be a starter in 2021. |

One reason why the New Orleans Saints decided to have QB Taysom Hill start over QB Jameis Winston for Week 11's game against the Atlanta Falcons is that head coach Sean Payton is curious if Hill would be a viable long-term solution under center for the organization. 'Sean just wants to know,' a source familiar with his thinking said.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton declined to announce Monday, Nov. 16, whether he intends to start Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill in place of the injured Drew Brees in Week 11 against the Atlanta Falcons.
Footballguys view: Winston was ...well, Winston-like filling in for an injured Brees in Week 10. He's got more experience and would likely be the starter with Brees out of action for the foreseeable future. However, Hill might get the shot or at least get more snaps as a quarterback with Brees out. |

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees completed 26-of-32 passes for 222 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he was rested in the second half of the fourth quarter with a lopsided score in his team's favor. He gave way to QB Jameis Winston, who faced his former team.

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill will continue to play multiple position even if QB Drew Brees misses time in 2020, according to Larry Holder of The Athletic, and Holder believes QB Jameis Winston will take over the traditional backup role that Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater filled last year.
Footballguys view: Hill did catch six touchdowns last year and he seems to perk up the offense when he gets on the field, so keeping him in this role is smart, but it doesn't necessarily have to preclude the team from having him serve as the backup. They would need to carry a third quarterback anyway in case Hill gets hurt, but it is surprising that a player expected to take over at quarterback next year isn't trusted to be a backup this year. |

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston will serve as the backup quarterback and start if QB Drew Brees were to miss time in 2020, according to Larry Holder of The Athletic.
Footballguys view: It continues to seem odd that the Saints would give Taysom Hill a two-year, $21 million extension and trumpet him as the quarterback of the future while not being willing to make him the backup of the present. Winston would obviously be a better option for the passing game if Brees misses time, so this is good news for Michael Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Jared Cook, and Alvin Kamara. |

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston said he still believes in himself after going from a starter in 2019 to competing for a backup job with the Saints in 2020. 'I know what I'm worth,' Winston said. 'And I know day in and day out, without publicly coming in and saying it, that historically I'm one of the best quarterbacks to play the game.' Winston went on to say he's eager to work his way back up to a starting role.
Footballguys view: Winston is not clearly the backup to Drew Brees. The former no.1 overall pick will have to compete in training camp with Taysom Hill to be the backup. Winston had over 5,000 yards passing last year but shouldn't see the field too much this year unless Brees gets banged up. |

New Orleans Saints QBs Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will have to compete and beat out the competition to back up QB Drew Brees in 2020, according to head coach Sean Payton Thursday, May 21.
Footballguys view: The word is Hill is going to get more playing time this year, even if that's as a gadget/third-string quarterback. Winston has all the starting experience and is the better passer, so we're expecting him to win the primary backup job behind Brees. |

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston completed 66.7 percent of his passes last season on play-action, making him the second-most accurate passer on such throws in the league.

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston's one-year deal has a $952,000 base salary and a $148,000 signing bonus. He can earn $1.76 million in playing time incentives, $1.8 million in playoff playing time incentives and $40,000 Pro Bowl incentives. The deal is worth a base of $1.1 million with the potential for $4.7 million with incentives.
Footballguys view: Winston has one year to prove himself behind the scenes. He won't start unless there's an injury to Drew Brees. In fact, we could see Taysom Hill get more snaps than Winston in 2020. Hill was set for a larger role this season anyway, and that could include some time at quarterback. |

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New Orleans on Tuesday, April 28. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
Footballguys view: This deal was coming down for some time and now it's officially official. Winston will serve as a veteran backup behind Drew Brees who won't see the field unless there's an injury. We'll see if he can impress enough behind the scenes to earn the job as the next starter for the team when Brees retires. |

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) is reportedly close to agreeing to terms with the New Orleans Saints on a one-year contract, according to Yahoo! Sports Charles Robinson.
Footballguys view: The Saints had Teddy Bridgewater as a backup to Drew Brees last year and they needed him when Brees was banged up. Winston would serve a similar role with plenty of starting experience. Taysom Hill would then continue as a gadget quarterback for the Saints in 2020. |

Free agent QB Jameis Winston is a backup fit for the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks.
Footballguys view: Winston would be a great fit and could be groomed to take over when Ben Roethlisberger is done playing. He may not want to be a backup now, but Winston is running out of options. Perhaps a coach like Mike Tomlin could convince him to come on board as a valuable reserve and future starting quarterback. |

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) was credited with 6,486 intended air yards (defined as the number of air yards a quarterback amassed on throws regardless of whether they were complete or incomplete) in 2019 - more than 900 intended air yards more than second-place Dak Prescott (5,539) and more than 1,200 intended air yards more than 2018 leader Patrick Mahomes (5,260).
Footballguys view: Winston is still out there waiting for another team to pick him up. Perhaps we'll see something give right before or right after the 2020 NFL draft at the end of this month. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said Thursday, April 9, he still believes in free-agent QB Jameis Winston. 'We've got a lot of respect for him,' Licht said. 'I thought he did a lot of great things, and anybody in our office or building would say the same thing. He did some spectacular things for us. I would never say that, personally -- and I think I speak on behalf of the organization -- that he's a bust. I think he's got a bright future ahead of him.'
Footballguys view: Winston is still waiting for a shot with a new team. Several teams could be suitors but there has been little buzz about who that would actually be. Winston could compete for a starting job with a team like the Chargers, but we think it would be interesting if he became a high-value backup on a team like the Steelers. Stay tuned. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady was charged with 116 'bad throws' in 2019, six fewer than league leader Jameis Winston - his predecessor in Tampa Bay.
Footballguys view: We'll see Brady can clean that up in his new offense. He's good at attacking underneath routes but Brady did grade out well when targeting players deep -- a hallmark of the Bruce Arians offense. |

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) threw for 19 touchdowns versus only one interception inside the 20 and posted a 15:1 TD-to-INT ratio inside the 10 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) on Saturday, March 21, posted a farewell tweet to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the city of Tampa. 'It's been a great 5 seasons as a Buccaneer. All love and respect, I love Tampa and I look forward to seeing y'all again in February,' Winston wrote on Twitter.
Footballguys view: The Bucs have moved on in a big way with Tom Brady as their new starting quarterback. Winston is a starter in this league but it will be interesting to see who gives him the chance. We should see him sign a new contract in the near future. |

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) is 'unlikely' to be a target of the New England Patriots, according to a high-ranking team official Friday, March 20.
Footballguys view: We'll see what the Patriots do at the quarterback position. Without Tom Brady things are going to be much, much different in 2020. Jarrett Stidham is currently at the top of the depth chart but it's unlikely the team just turns things over to the second-year pro this season. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston is unlikely to re-sign with the Buccaneers, in the opinion of MMQB's Peter King.
Footballguys view: Who knows what direction the Bucs will go in at the quarterback position. It seems like they may franchise tag LB Shaq Barrett and let Winston walk in free agency. They have been linked to Philip Rivers but at this time the Colts might be his most-likely destination. Teddy Bridgewater is now being linked to the Bucs and may be the front-runner to land there. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston (knee) underwent surgery on a torn meniscus after the 2019 season.
Footballguys view: Winston can't be faulted for a lack of toughness or dedication to his team. It still seems like staying with Tampa is his most likely outcome this offseason. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Jameis Winston, a pending free agent, could be offered a two-year deal by the Buccaneers with the first year guaranteed and the second year being a team option, according to sources. The first year would pay Winston roughly the same as a franchise tag ($27 million).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is expected to remain an option for the team for the 2020 season at least until the beginning of the legal three-day free-agent tampering period March 16-18, according to head coach Bruce Arians Thursday, Feb. 13. 'Really nothing has changed,' Arians said. 'What's Door No. 2? You know? Can we make the one we have better? All those things you go through right now. ... And then, that's the problem, you get about three days to decide. The legal tampering period. Is somebody going to get let go? What's the trade values? It's really monotonous right now because you don't have any answers.'
Footballguys view: The Buccaneers are free to negotiate with Winston right now but they are choosing not to do so. Instead, they will see what becomes realistic in free agency (Philip Rivers?) and then make a decision on Winston's future. Most have the Bucs going in a different direction at quarterback in the 2020 season. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston (eyes) recently underwent Lasik surgery to help improve his eyesight.
Footballguys view: Let the jokes begin about Winston being able to see the defense in 2020. Winston is set to be a free agent and there's no guarantee that the Bucs are going to have him back...especially with Philip Rivers available. We'll see if Winston sticks with the Bucs or goes somewhere else for the 2020 season...and we'll see if this surgery helps him throw fewer interceptions. |
Jameis Winston player page

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is coming off an up-and-down season in which he hit career highs in yards (5,109) and touchdowns (33) but also interceptions (30), including seven pick-sixes, and former Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said it's time the Bucs and Winston part ways. 'I would be surprised if they pay him,' Dominik told PewterReport.com. 'Maybe they will. It's their decision, but I would be shocked if the Bucs franchised Winston -- or transitioned him. I think the decision they have is certainly difficult because there has been some production there, but I don't know how you could justify paying Jameis Winston more money this year than he made last year.'
Footballguys view: Winston played on the fifth-year option in 2019 and had a tumultuous season. Bucs head coach Bruce Arians has to love Winston's ability to go downfield but the turnover problem is just too much. With so many quarterback options this offseason in free agency, trades and the draft it clouds any future Winston could have in Tampa. We'll get more information about how the team feels around the Scouting Combine in February. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston (thumb) is wearing a cast on the right thumb he injured during the regular season.
Footballguys view: The full cast on his thumb shows how serious the injury was for Winston. He played through the injury and it caused him great pain. Winston showed toughness and finished the year as the NFL's passing leader with 5,109 passing yards. We shall now see if Bucs head coach Bruce Arians wants to keep Winston around with a new contract or if the team heads in a different direction at the position for 2020 and beyond. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is expected to know about his future with the team soon, as head coach Bruce Arians told reporters Monday, Dec. 30, he's likely to have a decision made on Winston 'in a couple weeks' although the team may not announce their decision to the public.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston completed 13-of-24 passes for 201 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 17 against the Atlanta Falcons. RB Ronald Jones ran 11 times for 106 yards with two grabs for 10 yards, while WR Breshad Perriman led the way with five catches for 134 yards and a touchdown on eight targets. TE Cameron Brate had just one grab for two yards and a score on three targets. RB Peyton Barber ended up with six runs for 10 yards with two receptions for 25 yards on four targets.
Footballguys view: Winston threw a pick six in overtime on his last pass of the season. If it's his last pass as a Buc, then his career there will begin and end with pick sixes. The Bucs have a tough offseason decision on Winston, who will be a free agent. Ronald Jones had some promising moments this year and Perriman is about get paid in free agency. |
