Packers | Seneca Wallace not expected to return    Mon Jan 6, 03:00 PM

The Green Bay Packers are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent QB Seneca Wallace this offseason.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. The Packers will have to be mindful of their backup quarterback situation. They lost Aaron Rodgers for part of the season and weren't the same without him. Green Bay needs a quality backup player behind Rodgers.

Packers | Seneca Wallace headed to IR    Tue Nov 12, 11:12 AM

Green Bay Packers QB Seneca Wallace (groin) is headed to Injured Reserve due to his groin injury.

Footballguys view: The Packers are moving forward with Scott Tolzien as their starter while Aaron Rodgers is out. The just signed Matt Flynn to be his primary backup. Tolzien has shown enough on the field to give this offense buoyancy. Don't bail on Packers receivers just because of this quarterback issue.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers week-to-week    Tue Nov 5, 06:07 PM

The Green Bay Packers are considering QB Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) to be week-to-week as he recovers from a fractured clavicle to his left shoulder.

Footballguys view: We won't see Rodgers until the end of this month (at the earliest). Most expect that he will be back for the team's Thanksgiving game against the Lions. Seneca Wallace will be prepared as the starter in Week 10 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Packers | No timetable on Aaron Rodgers    Tue Nov 5, 03:41 PM

Updating previous reports, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) confirmed that he suffered a fractured left collarbone in Week 9, but insisted that there is no timetable for his return. Rodgers did acknowledge that 'it's a significant injury.' He said the pain was 'considerably more' than he's felt in a while. Rodgers is still going through the testing process.

Footballguys view: Seneca Wallace will get the first-team repetitions in practice this week and enter Week 10 against the Philadelphia Eagles as the starting quarterback. Scott Tolzien was activated off the practice squad and will be his primary backup.

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers' (collarbone) injury has been confirmed as a broken collarbone. The timetable for return is that 'it's going to be a little while.'

Footballguys view: Most think he's going to be on the sidelines until their Thanksgiving Game in Week 13. The Packers seem content to roll with Seneca Wallace as their quarterback, but they may go after Matt Flynn now that he's been released by the Bills.

49ers | Make roster moves    Sat Aug 31, 10:12 PM

Johnson, CB Darryl Morris, OG Patrick Omameh, DT Mike Purcell, S Trenton Robinson, FB Jason Schepler, S Michael Thomas, OG Wayne Tribue, QB Seneca Wallace and OT Kenny Wiggins.

Footballguys view: Hampton was in a battle with Anthony Dixon for a reserve RB spot. He's a naturally gifted runner but hasn't been able to make it at the pro level. Perhaps the team could sneak him through to the practice squad.

49ers | No backup QBs guaranteed spot    Fri Aug 23, 03:34 PM

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien, Seneca Wallace and B.J. Daniels are not guaranteed a roster spot at this point.   49ers | Seneca Wallace signed    Thu Aug 22, 02:07 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have signed free-agent QB Seneca Wallace (Saints). Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived WR Ricardo Lockette.

Footballguys view: Wallace was out of football in 2012 and failed to impress during his time with the Saints in training camp. The 49ers have not been happy with the backup QB competition. Wallace will compete with rookie B.J. Daniels (USF), Colt McCoy, and Scott Tolzien to be the primary backup behind Colin Kaepernick.

49ers | Expected to meet with Seneca Wallace    Wed Aug 21, 03:53 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have expressed interest in free-agent QB Seneca Wallace (Saints) and are expected to meet with him.

Footballguys view: The 49ers have an interesting group of backup QBs already on the roster. We've seen Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien, and rookie B.J. Daniels establish a pecking order behind starter Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers are looking for an upgrade to what they currently have and Wallace is an interesting option. He was struggling with the Saints and that's why they let him go.

Saints | Seneca Wallace let go    Mon Aug 19, 04:53 PM

The New Orleans Saints have released QB Seneca Wallace.

Footballguys view: We've probably seen the last of Wallace in the pros. The Saints are going to move forward with Josh McCown as the primary backup behind Drew Brees. Rookie Ryan Griffin is an interesting prospect to keep an eye on in super deep dynasty leagues.

Saints | Seneca Wallace misses practice     Wed Jul 31, 01:23 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Seneca Wallace (groin) did not participate in practice Wednesday, July 31, because of a groin injury.

Footballguys view: Wallace is competing with Luke McCown to be the primary backup behind Drew Brees. He was out of football last year and needs to get back to practice if he wants to beat out McCown.

Saints | Heated battle for No. 2 QB job    Wed Jul 31, 12:11 PM

New Orleans Saints QBs Luke McCown and Seneca Wallace are getting equal reps with the second-team offense, as they battle for the primary backup job behind starting QB Drew Brees.

Footballguys view: McCown is at camp with the Saints for the second consecutive year which could make him the slight favorite in this competition. Wallace was out of football last year and has been slowed recently by a groin injury. Brees has been incredibly durable since joining the Saints in 2006 and has only missed one game during his time in New Orleans.

Saints | Three vying for backup QB duties    Sun Jun 9, 08:13 PM

The New Orleans Saints have QBs Ryan W. Griffin, Luke McCown and Seneca Wallace in camp, each vying for the primary backup job behind starting QB Drew Brees.

Footballguys view: The team could go with a veteran like Wallace or McCown as the primary backup behind Brees. However, we love the upside of Griffin in super deep dynasty leagues. Our very own Cecil Lammey and Sigmund Bloom came away impressed by Griffin when they watched him during the week of practice for the Texas vs. The Nation Game earlier this year. He's your classic pocket passer with enough athleticism to climb the ladder and avoid pressure. Griffin has a strong arm and is known as a smart player.

The Seattle Seahawks worked out free-agent QBs Tyler Thigpen (Bills), Seneca Wallace (Browns), Matt Leinart (Raiders) and Brady Quinn (Chiefs) Monday, April 8, but will take some time before signing one of them.

Browns | Colt McCoy battling for backup job    Tue Aug 21, 06:19 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Colt McCoy is still battling for the backup quarterback job with QB Seneca Wallace. McCoy was more accurate than Wallace Tuesday, Aug. 21, but McCoy lacks the same velocity as QB Brandon Weeden, who is expected to start. 'When I first got diagnosed with this,' McCoy said, 'the doctor said it was a two- to three-year recovery. OK? So now I'm getting to that point, and my shoulder feels really good. The ball's coming out well. There's a lot of zip on it.'

Footballguys view: We still say McCoy is on the trade block for the right price. Weeden is the clear starter and the team would want to avoid any QB controversy if their first-round pick struggles early this year.

Browns | No. 2 QB competition expected to last entire preseason    Sun Aug 19, 04:34 PM

Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said the battle between QBs Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy for the No. 2 quarterback job likely will not be decided until all four preseason games are played.

Footballguys view: Or until the Browns work out a deal to trade McCoy for a conditional draft pick.

Browns | Have decision to make on Seneca Wallace    Sun Jun 24, 08:19 PM

The Cleveland Browns are expected to trade QB Colt McCoy at some point, but they are likely to make a decision on QB Seneca Wallace, too. The team drafted QB Brandon Weeden as the presumed starter, and the club needs to figure out whether they want to pay Wallace $2.4 million for the upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Wallace is more expensive to keep around than McCoy, but he wouldn't be a controversial backup. We think McCoy gets traded when training camp hits and other teams suffer injuries at the QB position. Teams like Dallas or Green Bay could be interested in McCoy.

Browns | Plan to keep Colt McCoy, Seneca Wallace    Thu Jun 14, 02:43 PM

Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said the plan at this point is to keep QBs Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace on the roster but indicated that the team may decide to change their plan later on.

Footballguys view: Notice how Holmgren said to this point. We could see McCoy getting traded in training camp if another team has injuries to their QB corps. Rookie Brandon Weeden is most likely going to be the Browns starting QB week one.

Browns | Seneca Wallace impressed with Brandon Weeden    Tue Jun 12, 03:27 PM

Cleveland Browns backup QB Seneca Wallace, who doesn't think there is room for himself on the roster anymore, said QB Brandon Weeden has 'all the things you want in a quarterback.' Head coach Pat Shurmur hasn't officially named Weeden as the starter, although he's being groomed for that role.

Footballguys view: Wallace would be an upgrade at backup quarterback for at least a few teams, including Philadelphia. The Browns would be smart to shop him once everyone has had a chance to see their QB situation up close and personal in the preseason.

Browns | Brandon Weeden takes first reps at minicamp    Wed Jun 6, 01:47 AM

Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden took the first 11-on-11 reps at minicamp Tuesday, June 5, over QBs Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace.

Footballguys view: The Browns publicly say the QB competition is open but it would be a shock if Weeden didn't open the season as the starter. Colt McCoy could get traded if the right deal comes along in training camp.

Browns | Brandon Weeden ready to compete for starting job    Mon May 14, 09:31 AM

Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden said he is ready to compete with QBs Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace for the starting quarterback job after taking part in his first rookie minicamp. 'Absolutely, I think we're just going to compete,' Weeden said. 'Nothing will change. I know Colt (is) a good guy. I know Seneca is a good guy. I met Seneca, so I'm looking forward to just being part of the other quarterbacks.'

Footballguys view: The Browns have stated Weeden isn't going to be handed the starting job, but he must win the job in training camp. The soon to be 29-year old rookie doesn't have time to sit and develop, so he should likely be the week 1 starter for the Browns.

Browns | Brandon Weeden must earn starting job     Wed May 9, 08:59 AM

Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said rookie QB Brandon Weeden must earn the team's starting job this season; he'll still have to beat out QBs Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace for the job. 'We drafted a young quarterback that we think can come in and play right away, but we're not just going to hand him the football,' Holmgren said. 'I still love Colt McCoy (but) we had a chance to get a mature quarterback who has a chance to come in and contribute right away. Whether that happens or not we have to let it play out.'

Footballguys view: The Browns didn't take Weeden in the first-round so he could sit behind McCoy and develop. His age is also a big factor as he'll turn 29 during his rookie season. The team needs Weeden to win this job so he can start right away and gain valuable experience.

Browns | Wallace willing to mentor rookie QB Weeden    Tue May 1, 07:03 PM

Mary Kay Cabot, from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports veteran QB Seneca Wallace is willing to mentor rookie QB Brandon Weeden. "I know my job going into my 10th season of being in this offense is to prepare Brandon Weeden to get him right and make sure he's ready to go for day one." he said.

Footballguys view: Wallace is singing a different tune now after saying he wanted to compete for the starting job with Colt McCoy last year. If McCoy is dealt in a trade then Wallace would serve as the team's primary backup behind the rookie Weeden.

Browns | Seneca Wallace wants chance to start     Mon Jan 2, 10:24 AM

Cleveland Browns QB Seneca Wallace said he intends to ask head coach Pat Shurmur for a chance to compete for the team's starting quarterback job next season during his exit interview Monday, Jan. 2. 'I think we all know at the end of the day, we don't want to sit here and keep trying to grind with bringing in a young quarterback and having to go through those growing pains,' Wallace said. 'You guys have been hard on us all season long, and what we need is to win and win now, and that's one of the biggest things is, whoever gives us that opportunity to do that, I think that should be the decision.'

Footballguys view: Wallace is a nice veteran backup but it's unlikely he'll get a starting job next year. The Browns should select QB Robert Griffin III (Baylor) with the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
