Free-agent DE Kyle Vanden Bosch (Lions) does not appear to have received much interest this offseason and the belief is that he will retire.

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he expects the teams high draft picks to be on the field quickly because of the needs of the team. 'That's a fair statement, but it's also fair to say we had more holes coming into it, or more holes that we knew about, coming into this draft than we did last year,' Mayhew said. 'We do expect a lot of those guys, especially guys that we took early, to be on the field pretty quickly.'
Footballguys view: It's a good plan for the Lions. We'll see their first-round pick 'Ziggy' Ansah as the replacement for Kyle Vanden Bosch. Darius Slay is a tall, physical corner and the second-round pick will compete with Bill Bentley for the starting job. Larry Warford is a mountain of a man and the third-round pick will replace Stephen Peterman who was picked up by the Jets in free agency. |

Detroit Lions DE Kyle Vanden Bosch is likely to be a salary cap casualty this offseason. OG Rob Sims is the only secure starter on the offensive line, and OT Gosder Cherilus will become a free agent. OT Jeff Backus has a year left on his contract, but the team isn't rushing to make a decision on him. OG Riley Reiff will start somewhere in 2013. OT Jason Fox, if he's re-signed, should see a good shot to play at tackle next season.

The Detroit Lions could have some interest in free-agent DE Jason Babin (Eagles) but not through waivers. Any team that claims Babin will be responsible for the balance of his $5.575-million contract this year, about $1.8 million. The Lions don't have enough cap space to take on that deal without restructuring current contracts. However, DE Cliff Avril and DE Lawrence Jackson will be unrestricted free agents after the season, and DE Kyle Vanden Bosch just turned 34, so the Lions might be interested in Babin.
Footballguys view: Babin's not going to be on the street for very long. We'll see quite a few teams show interest in the veteran pass rusher. |

Detroit Lions DE Kyle Vanden Bosch believes the team should have the best defensive line in the league this season. Vanden Bosch thinks the Lions will lead the NFL in sacks. 'If we're not the most dominant defensive line in the league, I feel like we're not doing our job,' Vanden Bosch said. 'I feel like we have the people, I feel like we have the weapons, so if we're not doing it, we're underachieving.'

Detroit Lions DE Kyle Vanden Bosch agreed to a contract restructure Wednesday, Sept. 5. Most of his base salary was converted into a signing bonus to save the team about $3 million in salary cap space.
Footballguys view: Vanden Bosch was going to make $5MM this season, but now his base salary is the veteran minimum of $925,000. Detroit also added two voidable years to the end of the deal, which is set to expire after the 2013 season. |

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the team will continue to limit DE Kyle Vanden Bosch's workload during training camp and practices during the season because Vanden Bosch performed well last season when he rested during Wednesday practices. 'We've just got to do whatever we can to keep him on the field. We started this last year and everything else, it really has nothing to do with the new standards and the new rules, but things like that will help veteran players like Kyle Vanden Bosch.'

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said Detroit Lions DL Kyle Vanden Bosch has a knack for delivering late hits to opponents. Rodgers feels the hit he took from Vanden Bosch in Week 12 was questionable. 'Well, look at my chin here, and you let me know. I've got a little cut right here. So no, he hit me in the chin,' Rodgers said. '...He likes to lay on people. Like I said, if you have a camera on him the entire game, and we watch the film, he is late getting to a lot of plays, and he just lays on guys, and stays on there.'
