Patriots | Jarrett Stidham would get start    Fri Oct 9, 01:27 PM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham would start Monday, Oct. 12, against the Denver Broncos if QB Cam Newton (COVID-19) has to miss a second straight start.

Footballguys view: It's unclear who will get the start for New England Monday. Cam Newton would obviously be the best case scenario for the offense, but Stidham looked more ready to play than Brian Hoyer last Monday night.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham returns to practice Friday    Sat Aug 22, 10:33 AM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham (leg) was spotted throwing passes to WR Julian Edelman during the portion of practice which was open to the media Friday, Aug. 21. He had undergone precautionary tests at a hospital for a leg injury Thursday, Aug. 20, but all of the tests came back negative.

Footballguys view: The reports from yesterday might have been bleaker than the reality, but we should still consider Stidham out of the competition to start Week 1 vs Miami.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham update    Fri Aug 21, 11:46 AM

Updating an earlier report, New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham (hip) is dealing with a hip injury that is unlikely to be 100 percent for a few weeks. He is fighting to play through it, though.

Footballguys view: This almost cinches Cam Newton as the Week 1 starter, with Brian Hoyer as his competition now. Expect a bump in Newton's ADP in fantasy leagues where there has been some skepticism as long as the Patriots were splitting camp snaps evenly. That trend changed yesterday and this development should wrap up any perception of a quarterback competition.

Patriots | Cam Newton takes early lead in QB battle?    Thu Aug 20, 08:44 PM

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton attempted 'nearly three times the number of competitive throws' that Jarrett Stidham did in practice Thursday, Aug. 20. This occurrence took place one day after head coach Bill Belichick told reporters 'there will be some point where that's (one quarterback seeing significantly more reps than the other) going to happen.

Patriots | Rotation at QB for Patriots?    Wed Aug 19, 02:53 PM

New England Patriots QBs Jarrett Stidham, Cam Newton and Brian Hoyer are competing for the starting job, but head coach Bill Belichick did not rule out the possibility of using a rotation at quarterback if it gives the team the best chance to win.

Footballguys view: Reiss is one of the best beat writers in the league, so when he suggests something we all should listen. The Patriots are running out of time to choose a starting quarterback and we could see a rotation early on in the season until one (Cam Newton?) emerges as the primary guy. It sounds crazy, but hey -- it would kind of fit 2020, right?

Patriots | Equal snaps for New England QBs    Mon Aug 17, 04:46 PM

New England Patriots QBs Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer received equal repetitions during practice Monday, Aug. 17.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are not going to announce a starting quarterback until they have to. Newton should come out on top in this competition and so long as he's healthy could have a bounce-back season in 2020. We're expecting Stidham to beat out Hoyer for the no.2 quarterback job.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham eager for competition    Fri Aug 7, 12:20 PM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham on Friday, Aug. 7, said it's 'been a wild ride this offseason ... I'm happy to get rolling.' He also added that he's looking forward to the 'competition' with QBs Cam Newton and Brian Hoyer.

Footballguys view: Stidham has the advantage of having a year experience in Josh McDaniels' system over Cam Newton, but a healthy Newton should have no trouble pulling away from him. Newton's ADP is still a little depressed with the uncertainty of a quarterback battle, but that should be resolved once padded practices start.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham out with teammates    Sun Jul 19, 01:15 PM

New England Patriots QBs Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer have been working out with teammates this past week. WR Mohamed Sanu, WR Gunner Olszewski, RB Damien Harris and TE Dalton Keene were among the players participating in the workouts.

Footballguys view: Cam Newton was working out with Patriots free agent signing Damiere Byrd, who was his teammate in Carolina, and last week worked out with Sanu and 2019 first-round pick N'keal Harry. Stidham has a longer tenure with the team, and his familiarity with the offense and roster will be his best bet to win the starting job over Newton.

Patriots | Sources still think Jarrett Stidham starts    Thu Jul 16, 06:36 PM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham is still believed to be in line for the Week 1 start by several members of the organization, according to talk radio host Scott Zolak Monday, July 13. 'I believe Jarrett is going to be the starter from the people that I talk to, the people that I trust: the players, people tied to the team, team captains,' Zolak said. 'The way they speak of Jarrett Stidham and the work he has put in.'

Footballguys view: There's no way this can be set in stone until the Patriots see Stidham and Cam Newton up close. It's understandable to put out a public message of support for Stidham and maintaining a sense of believing in him sustains the chances of him being the quarterback of the future, even if he isn't the quarterback of the present, but a rational coach would pick a healthy Newton over Stidham entering his second year in the league every time.

Patriots | Top QBs working together    Sun Jun 7, 12:13 PM

New England Patriots QBs Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer have been working out together this offseason.

Footballguys view: That makes sense as Hoyer has been in the system a long time and the team is obviously valuing that at quarterback. Stidham beat Hoyer our for the backup spot last year. Hoyer would probably be better for the fantasy value of Patriots receivers, but either way this will be a bottom 10 pass offense.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham working with Edelman    Fri Jun 5, 10:38 AM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham has regularly been working out with WR Julian Edelman as both are based out of Massachusetts.

Footballguys view: This is as good news as you could hope for if you are invested in Edelman. He should be the leading target for an offense that will take a step back in passing efficiency. Stidham should be the starter to open the season, but Brian Hoyer is waiting in the wings if the 2019 fourth-round pick fails.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham draws lofty comparison    Tue Jun 2, 07:52 PM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham drew praise from Chris Simms of Pro Football Talk when he was compared to a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback. 'First off, I loved (Stidham) coming out of college,' Simms said. 'I saw a lot of him in preseason last year, and loved the way he looked. Really, when you look at him, there's nothing to say or look at him physically and go, 'Oh, there's a weakness to his football game.' He reminds me a little of Tony Romo. He's a very pure thrower of the football. He's got great mechanics, he's natural that way. He's smart, and we know he's being well-schooled up there in New England.'He doesn't have as strong of an arm as Tom Brady, but it's not far off - it's right there in that range. It's a really good arm, and he's a good athlete. Not an athlete that's going to run for a ton of yards, but can move around the pocket and extend plays that way. That's what I'm excited about with Jarrett Stidham: He's got great feel. He's a natural at playing the quarterback position, let alone, he's got skills that can really shine and stand out as well.'

Footballguys view: Let's all calm down on these type of comparisons. Stidham displayed first-round tools during his college career at Auburn, but he fell to the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft due to a poor senior season. He flashed in the preseason last year and then held a clipboard behind the GOAT Tom Brady. We'll see if Stidham can continue to develop and win the starting job in 2020. He'll compete with veteran journeyman Brian Hoyer for the top spot.

Patriots | More expectation for Brian Hoyer to start    Sat May 23, 04:10 PM

Former New England Patriots DL Rob Ninkovich (retired) believes QB Brian Hoyer will be under center for Week 1 of the 2020 season, instead of QB Jarrett Stidham. 'Look, when you're a second-year player, you really don't realize what a season's like as a starter,' Ninkovich said. 'You don't understand what it's going to take, and not having an offseason does not help. So, Brian Hoyer will be the starter Week 1.' Ninkovich also touted Hoyer's experience both as an NFL starter and in the Patriots' offensive system as reasons he should get the Week 1 start.

Footballguys view: Hoyer has all the experience in the world, so he's a 'safe' option to put your chips on. However, Stidham looked good in the preseason last year and might just win the job outright with improved play this year in training camp and the preseason. Fantasy GMs have plenty of other options at quarterback no matter who is the new starting quarterback for New England.

Patriots | Will Hastings has an advantage    Fri May 22, 10:46 AM

New England Patriots WR Will Hastings has an advantage over the other receivers vying for a roster spot because he was QB Jarrett Stidham's slot receiver in college. However, Hastings is coming off of two knee surgeries, and he'll have to show he regained his burst.

Footballguys view: Hastings was not invited to the Scouting Combine but he did run a (hand-timed) 4.5 40-yard dash at his pro day. He's your classic slot receiver with quickness and good hands on short-to-intermediate routes. He's competing for a roster spot or a spot on the team's practice squad in 2020.

Patriots | Bill Belichick content with QBs room    Thu May 7, 09:30 PM

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said Thursday, May 7, he's content with the team's options at quarterback after signing undrafted free-agent QBs Brian Lewerke and J'Mar Smith to go with Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham. 'Yeah, well that is where we are -- you never know what is going to happen down the road, but we feel like we have four good players there,' Belichick said on NFL Network. 'We added Brian and J'Mar to Hoyer and Stidham. We added Hoyer and had Stidham from last year. We like working with those guys and we will see how it goes.'

Footballguys view: The Patriots are likely to roll with Stidham as their starter in 2020. Stidham was a fourth-round pick last year but he showed some flashes in the preseason as a rookie. It's a huge shadow left by Tom Brady but with Belichick leading the way this team can still win enough games to get them around .500 on the season.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham top candidate to be starter    Sun May 3, 01:13 PM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham is considered the leading candidate to start at quarterback in 2020, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Stidham is their guy as they've made no move that would make anyone think otherwise. He was a fourth-round pick out of Auburn last year but he has first-round tools and was thought of as a potential first-round pick before his senior season in college. It's ridiculous to think the Patriots are 'Tanking for Trevor Lawrence' in 2020. Bill Belichick thinks he can win games with Stidham as his starter.

Patriots | Jarret Stidham's chances increasing of being Pats starting QB    Wed Apr 29, 01:56 AM

The New England Patriots are moving forward with the growing likelihood that QB Jarrett Stidham, a fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, will be their starting quarterback entering the 2020 season, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: The team seems to like Stidham and this year could be his chance to prove that he can be the next franchise quarterback. He was a fourth-round pick out of Auburn in 2019, but Stidham has first-round tools. In fact, he was considered a potential first-round pick before his final season (which wasn't great) in college. Perhaps the team has learned how to get the best out of the young quarterback.

Patriots | Brian Hoyer more likely starter?    Thu Apr 16, 08:30 PM

New England Patriots QB Brian Hoyer is more likely to be the Week 1 starter than Jarrett Stidham, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network Thursday, April 16. 'My guess right now is Brian Hoyer is the starting quarterback of the Patriots in 2020, but I think that is something that will be ever-evolving as we get through next season,' Rapoport said.

Footballguys view: We'll see how things shake out in training camp and the preseason. Hoyer is the veteran who has a ton of experience, but Stidham had first-round tools even though he fell to the fourth round in the 2019 NFL draft. We'll also see if the Patriots add a quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft.

Patriots | New England will adjust to new QB    Tue Apr 14, 12:16 AM

In life after Tom Brady, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said the team will adapt and gear everything for doing what is best for their new starting quarterback, whoever that may be. Belichick said that's what they did previously for Brady and he doesn't see that changing. 'Whoever the quarterback is, we'll try to make things work smoothly and efficiently for that player and take advantage of his strengths and his skills,' Belichick noted. The Patriots currently have QBs Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer on roster.

Footballguys view: It's going to be odd to see a different quarterback lining up for the Patriots. Belichick believes he and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have a 'pretty good feel for both' quarterbacks. The team may also address the position in the upcoming NFL Draft, potentially early.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham, N'Keal Harry have plan    Fri Apr 3, 02:20 PM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham and WR N'Keal Harry are planning to meet to go over the offense and work out if OTAs are cancelled this spring by the coronavirus.

Footballguys view: Stidham is the top quarterback on the roster for now. We'll see if the Patriots make a move for a quarterback like Cam Newton to improve the depth chart.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham appears to be favorite for starting job    Sun Mar 29, 09:19 AM

The New England Patriots' starting quarterback job appears to be QB Jarrett Stidham's to lose, according to Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston. The team is not expected to pursue a mid-tier veteran quarterback this offseason.

Footballguys view: Stidham had first-round tools and was projected as a top quarterback before his senior season at Auburn. He fell to the mid rounds of the draft where the Patriots scooped him up last year. Stidham is tough and accurate as a passer, but this leap to the starting lineup is going to be huge for the young quarterback. If Stidham is the Patriots starter, expect the team to help him out by running the ball and playing great defense.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham focused on himself    Sat Jan 18, 09:37 PM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham said he isn't worrying about impending free-agent QB Tom Brady's future with the team. 'Right now, I can't really think too much about all of that,' Stidham said. 'I have to worry about what I need to do to prepare to enhance my game, to learn as much as I possibly can. That's the biggest thing I've focused on, making a big stride from Year 1 to Year 2.'

Footballguys view: Stidham is an interesting young quarterback who the Patriots added as a fourth-round pick out of Auburn in the 2019 NFL draft. He has good tools as a passer and plays with high football intelligence. We don't think the Patriots just hand him the job if they lose Tom Brady in free agency, but Stidham might be in the mix to replace Brady.
