NFL | Zac Stacy returning with AAF    Fri Feb 8, 09:55 PM

Retired RB Zac Stacy (Jets) has signed with the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football.

Footballguys view: Stacy was a classic power back during his short time in the NFL. He was drafted in the fifth round by the St. Louis Rams with the 160th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Stacy spent the 2015 season with the Jets and hasn't been in the NFL since then.

Jets | Zac Stacy waived    Wed Jul 27, 12:04 PM

New York Jets RB Zac Stacy (leg) was waived Wednesday, July 27, due to a failed physical. The team could opt to re-sign him in the future.

Footballguys view: Stacy is still recovering from a broken ankle suffered last year. When healthy, the team may bring him back or another team could show interest in the veteran (although don't expect the phone lines to heat up for his services).

Jets | Two Jets RBs to compete for No. 3 job    Wed Jul 20, 04:07 PM

New York Jets RBs Zac Stacy (leg) and Khiry Robinson (leg) will compete for the No. 3 running back job during training camp, but Robinson may have an edge because the team does not believe he has reached his full potential yet.

Footballguys view: Robinson is the player to highlight here. He's a swift runner who can build a head of steam, and Robinson has a nose for the end zone. With Matt Forte's struggles near paydirt, we could see Robinson become the goal-line back for the Jets.

Jets | New York backs should be ready for camp    Sat Jun 4, 02:38 PM

New York Jets RBs Zac Stacy (ankle) and Khiry Robinson (leg) are both expected to be ready for training camp. Stacy suffered a broken ankle late last season, while Robinson broke his leg late in the year.

Footballguys view: The Jets went out and added Matt Forte in free agency earlier this year. He's going to be the lead back for the team, and we expect them to lean on Forte as much as possible. Bilal Powell is likely the primary backup, and that leaves Robinson and Stacy fighting for a spot in the pecking order. Both are talented, but we prefer Robinson because of his size/speed combination.

Jets | Zac Stacy out for game    Thu Nov 12, 10:27 PM

Updating a previous story, New York Jets RB Zac Stacy (ankle) has been ruled out for the remainder of the Week 10 contest against the Buffalo Bills with an ankle injury.

Footballguys view: We'll have to watch how this unfolds next week. Stacy was the third down back here, and Stevan Ridley took over that role Thursday night, though it's not playing to his strength. We'll see what the Jets do going forward depending on the severity of Stacy's injury.

Jets | Zac Stacy carted off    Thu Nov 12, 09:59 PM

New York Jets RB Zac Stacy (undisclosed) was carted off against the Buffalo Bills in Week 10 after suffering an injury returning a kickoff to end the first half.

Footballguys view: Stacy had his ankle bent awkwardly during an ill-advised kick return at the end of the first half, and it looks bad. We'll watch this to see what the final reports are, but right now assume Stevan Ridley is the third down back, as the Jets seemed to use him in that role Thursday during their loss.

Jets | Bilal Powell out for Week 7    Fri Oct 23, 01:00 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (ankle) is out for Week 7 against the New England Patriots. The team will discuss whether to activate RB Stevan Ridley (knee) off the Physically Unable to Perform list over the next two days. RB Zac Stacy could serve as the backup Sunday, Oct. 25.

Footballguys view: Stacy has some value in deep leagues as the current handcuff to a back with a long injury history on a team with a great defense.

The New York Jets have declared OG Ben Ijalana, DL Deon Simon, WR Devin Smith, CB Dexter McDougle, QB Geno Smith, OG Jarvis Harrison, RB Zac Stacy inactive for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Stacy was seen as a possible backup for Chris Ivory, but it looks like the Jets are content to keep him as emergency depth, even with Stevan Ridley on the PUP list.

Jets | NY's running back depth is solid    Mon Aug 10, 07:54 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory is the team's starting running back, but the Jets' running back depth behind him with RBs Stevan Ridley, Zac Stacy and Bilal Powell is impressive and will give QB Geno Smith a lot of help out of the backfield.

Footballguys view: The Jets don't have a problem at the running back position. We'll see if Ridley can push Ivory for the top spot when healthy. The team loves the versatility of Powell, and even Stacy is a decent starting option if needed.

Jets | Zac Stacy on outside looking in?    Wed Aug 5, 10:31 PM

New York Jets RB Zac Stacy is competing with RBs Chris Ivory, Stevan Ridley (knee) and Bilal Powell for one of the running back spots on the 53-man roster in training camp and the preseason. According to beat writer Darryl Slater, Stacy is not projected to make the cut, although it could depend on the health of Ridley.

Footballguys view: Stacy is a plodding runner who isn't an exciting option as a starter. The Rams moved him to the Jets earlier this year in exchange for a seventh-round pick. He's no lock to make the final roster, even with Ridley banged up.

Jets | Chris Ivory leads backfield    Wed Jun 24, 10:35 AM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory is listed as the starting running back entering training camp, according to beat writer Rich Cimini's unofficial depth chart. RB Bilal Powell is the primary backup, and RB Zac Stacy is listed as the third running back. RB Stevan Ridley (knee) could figure in eventually, but he's expected to be limited at the start of camp.

Footballguys view: We were all expecting Ivory to be the top guy...especially with Ridley banged up. What's interesting to note is that Stacy is third on the depth chart. We'll see if he can climb ahead of Powell when training camp starts.

Jets | Running back situation up in the air    Thu May 21, 02:51 PM

New York Jets coach Todd Bowles said his team's running back situation may take until the preseason to sort out. RB's Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Zac Stacy, Stevan Ridley and Daryl Richardson all have experience at the position, but no one has broken out yet.

Footballguys view: Bowles has no attachment to any of the previous regime's running backs - we're looking at you Powell and Ivory - but Ridley is coming off a significant leg injury and Stacy faded during last year. There's room for everyone to get carries which hurts everyone's value right now. Until we see how things shake out more in camp, this is a situation to avoid.

Jets | NYJ to run more in 2015?    Tue May 19, 02:14 PM

New York Jets RBs Chris Ivory, Stevan Ridley, Zac Stacy and others could be busy this season, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles said the reason he hired offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is because he has a track record of being able to run the ball, at least in his college coaching days. Bowles supposedly prefers a balanced, ball-control offense, which puts more of the onus on the running backs.

Footballguys view: There's a huge question mark at quarterback (Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick) so it's wise for the Jets to lean on their rushing attack. Through free agency and trades they have compiled quite a group of backs led by Ivory. We believe in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, and he could make Ivory a value add for fantasy owners. Ivory's current ADP is RB35 (8.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Rams | Zac Stacy traded to Jets    Sat May 2, 05:27 PM

Former St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy has been traded to the New York Jets in exchange for the Jets' 224 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Rams clear up the backfield a little bit and it's now down to Todd Gurley and Tre Mason. Both backs could struggle behind this offensive line and against what could be stacked fronts as well as hurting each other's value. This is a tough fantasy situation going forward.

Jets | Zac Stacy acquired by Jets    Sat May 2, 05:23 PM

Former St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy has been acquired by the New York Jets in exchange for the Rams' 224th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Jets get a proven player for a seventh round pick who probably would have struggled to make the roster. Stacy is in a crowded backfield though with Chris Ivory, Stevan Ridley and Bilal Powell. It's hard to see him breaking out and with this many backs, consistent fantasy points could be hard to find.

Jets | New York interested in Zac Stacy?    Sat May 2, 02:34 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy may be drawing interest from the New York Jets. The Jets have reportedly asked the Rams about Stacy, who now seems to be on bad terms with St. Louis after RB Todd Gurley was selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Stacy has shown flashes of talent, and might do well behind Chris Ivory. He'd vie with Bilal Powell and Stevan Ridley for the second spot.

Rams | STL talk with Zac Stacy's reps    Fri May 1, 02:08 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy's representatives had a productive discussion with the team, but there is no decision on Stacy's future with the team.

Footballguys view: After Todd Gurley was drafted, Stacy tweeted out 'yikes.' While he quickly deleted the tweet, we understand his concern. He's a third wheel behind Gurley and Tre Mason, at best. He and his agents want him to be traded or released, but there isn't a big market for him.

Rams | Zac Stacy wants out    Fri May 1, 08:10 AM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy has asked the team for a trade or to be released after the team selected RB Todd Gurley in the first round of the NFL Draft, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Stacy is going to get his wish granted, but we don't know how many teams will be lined up to add him via trade. He was replaced as the starter last year by Tre Mason, and now with Gurley he will be pushed even further down the depth chart.

Rams | Zac Stacy likely No. 2    Fri Apr 3, 08:28 AM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy will likely be the backup to RB Tre Mason in 2015.

Footballguys view: This is the best move for the Rams. Mason proved that he should be the lead back last year, and he's got explosive playmaking ability. Stacy gives the team quality depth at the position, but he's not as dynamic as Mason.

Rams | Isaiah Pead could be dumped by Rams    Sun Feb 8, 08:18 PM

The St. Louis Rams might consider releasing RB Isaiah Pead this offseason. The move would create just under $941,000 of additional cap space. The club has RBs Tre Mason, Benny Cunningham, Zac Stacy and Trey Watts on the roster, and Pead hasn't had much impact since being drafted in the second round in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: We're surprised Pead has made it this long with the Rams. That might have to do with him being a second-round pick a few years ago. Pead lacks the ability to make much of an impact as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. This free agent and draft class is incredibly strong at running back. If on the open market, we can't imagine Pead drawing a lot of attention.

Rams | St. Louis to stick with one RB?    Sat Nov 1, 03:30 PM

St. Louis Rams RBs Zac Stacy, Benny Cunningham and Tre Mason have split repetitions in the Rams' backfield this year, but head coach Jeff Fisher hinted that the team could stick with one guy going forward, though he didn't indicate who that would be.

Footballguys view: This is great but as the article says - we don't know who the main back will be. Mason has led the team in rushing each of the last three weeks, but the rookie needs to play with better ball security. The situation is too unsteady to depend on any of these backs until one truly emerges. We hear ya, six teams are on bye, so that makes this trio a starting option for some in deeper leagues. We see Mason as a RB3/flex with upside, Cunningham is a low-end RB3/flex and Stacy as a RB5/flex (add a 'what the heck' on his flex appeal).

Rams | Rams split RB snaps evenly in Week 8    Mon Oct 27, 04:10 PM

St. Louis Rams RBs Tre Mason and Benny Cunningham each were on the field for 18 snaps in Week 8. RB Zac Stacy received 15 snaps during the game.

Footballguys view: Just what fantasy owners did not want to see. Mason led the team in rushing for the third week in a row, but his performance was barely 'what the heck' flex worthy. This is a situation to largely avoid until one (Mason?) emerges from the pack.

Rams | Zac Stacy could be available    Sun Oct 26, 12:24 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy could be on the trade block since it appears he has fallen out of favor with the Rams.

Footballguys view: And yet Jeff Fisher says he could get 25 carries any week now. Stacy might bring more in a deal than Doug Martin. They have similar measureables and Stacy has one more year left on his rookie deal.

Rams | Zac Stacy could remain a factor    Fri Oct 24, 10:53 AM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy, who didn't have a touch in Week 7, could remain a factor in the backfield in Week 8 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Earlier in the week, head coach Jeff Fisher said Stacy could have 25 carries Sunday, Oct. 26. However, the team is likely to give RB Tre Mason every opportunity to develop the hot hand this weekend.

Footballguys view: Mason is still the best Rams back to own and play this weekend. If there is going to be a Rams RB emerge with consistent weekly value this year, it will be Mason.

Rams | Tre Mason could be top RB option    Wed Oct 22, 03:08 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason could be the top candidate for a majority of carries since he is averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Mason rushed for 85 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries in Week 7 and received most of the carries because he had the hot hand, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. RB Zac Stacy was announced the starter for Week 7 but only played one snap. RB Benny Cunningham only rushed for three yards during the game. Stacy is averaging 3.93 yards per carry this season, while Cunningham is averaging 3.78 yards per carry.

Footballguys view: Mason has led the team in rushing yards over the last two weeks. The speedy rookie has more explosiveness than Cunningham or Stacy. Fantasy owners need to consider Mason a low-end RB2/flex with upside in PPR leagues.

Rams | Zac Stacy nearly non-existent    Sun Oct 19, 05:01 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy did not have any touches in the Week 7 game against the Seattle Seahawks. The Rams used a combination of RBs Tre Mason, who had 85 rushing yards and a touchdown, and Benny Cunningham, who led the team with 46 receiving yards and a score.

Footballguys view: Stacy has fallen out of favor after seizing the backfield last year from lesser talents than Tre Mason and Benny Cunningham. He is droppable in redraft leagues, and his dynasty value is plummeting.

Rams | Hot-handed RB will be used in STL    Sat Oct 18, 04:20 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy may have his workload cut after offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer confirmed the team will use the running back with the hot hand late in the game. 'Early in the game, we try to get guys multiple touches (and) then we try to go with the hot hand late in the game,' Schottenheimer said. 'Most places that I've been that have really good running games, they had the people to spread the ball around. Different backs bring different types of plays.'

Footballguys view: Well that's no good. Bump Stacy to no more than an RB3. He may be the hot hand but there is too much chance Benny Cunningham (or Tre Mason) ends up top dog instead. It might be good to stay away from this unless you're in a tough spot.

Rams | Tre Mason makes most of chance    Sat Oct 18, 12:34 AM

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason was active last week for the first time all season, and he played nine snaps with six touches. He finished with five carries for 40 yards and a reception for 12 yards. He was active for the first time because RB Chase Reynolds (hip) was inactive due to injury. Mason is expected to join RBs Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham in a running-back-by-committee approach. 'Well, early in the game we try to get guys multiple touches,' offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said Friday, Oct. 17. 'That's part of the deal. Then we try to go with the hot hand late in the game. Most places that I've been that have really good running games, they had the people to spread the ball around.'

Footballguys view: We love what the rookie showed last week....and we want to see more. Here's the problem: offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer says the team will use a 'hot hand' approach at the running back position. That makes Mason (RB4/what the heck flex), Benny Cunningham (RB3/flex) and Zac Stacy (high-end RB3) all risky fantasy plays.

Rams | Zac Stacy listed as probable    Fri Oct 17, 05:00 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy (ankle) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 17, and is listed as probable.

Footballguys view: It would almost be more comforting for Stacy owners if he was hurting enough to explain the drop in his usage. If he doesn't get a lot of touches against the Seahawks, it might be time to drop him.

Rams | Zac Stacy practices in full    Thu Oct 16, 09:17 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy (ankle) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Oct. 16.

Footballguys view: Things have been changing in the Rams' backfield, and fantasy owners need to take note. We saw rookie Tre Mason lead the team in rushing in Week 6, and he could get more of an opportunity going forward. This drops the value of Stacy (and Benny Cunningham). Stacy is a RB3/flex play only moving forward.

Rams | Zac Stacy healthy    Wed Oct 15, 09:23 AM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy (calf) had no injury issues in Week 6 when the team decided to use a three-man rotation at running back, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here, but people need to recognize that the Rams could start using Tre Mason a bit more in the backfield. The rookie is more explosive than Stacy or Benny Cunningham. The Rams play the Seahawks in Week 7, and we can't trust Stacy as anything more than a RB3/flex play.

Rams | St. Louis could stick with RB rotation    Tue Oct 14, 07:24 PM

St. Louis Rams RBs Zac Stacy, Benny Cunningham and Tre Mason may continue to head a three-man rotation in the backfield, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: Great. Just what fantasy owners did not want to hear. Stacy should continue to be the lead back, but Cunningham and Mason could get worked in more and more. Stacy might be able to perform like a low-end RB2/flex play, while Cunningham and Mason are more 'what the heck' flex plays.

Rams | Rams to ride hot hand at RB?    Fri Sep 5, 02:08 PM

St. Louis Rams general manager Les Snead said he expects the team to ride the 'hot hand' any given week at running back, according to a source. As a result, RB Benny Cunningham could cut into RB Zac Stacy's workload immediately in Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings. Stacy had 250 carries in just 12 starts last year and was among the league leaders in carries per game. Cunningham had just 47 carries last year, but he impressed the team in training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: This is terrible news for Stacy owners, as he is not the kind of talent to just pull away from others in a backfield competition. Stacy's value takes a hit, Benny Cunningham's goes up, and even rookie Tre Mason has more speculative value over the course of the season now. The Rams are equipped to run the ball with force, so you want to have a shot at their top running back if you can afford the roster spot for Cunningham. Unfortunately, the weekly outlook in this backfield could remain murky all year make any Ram back a risky play in any given week.

Rams | Benny Cunningham may get snaps    Thu Aug 28, 12:43 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Benny Cunningham has been the team's best running back during the preseason and could push RB Zac Stacy for playing time this season.

Footballguys view: We'll have to see if this pans out, but keep in mind that with the injury to Sam Bradford, the team might need to run the ball a ton. That would leave plenty of chances for both Stacy and Cunningham. We have Stacy as a solid RB2, but this is worth watching closely as Cunningham is a strong candidate for handcuffing at least.

Rams | Sam Bradford out for season    Sun Aug 24, 04:10 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford (knee) is out for the season after an MRI revealed a torn left anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: A brutal blow for both the Rams and Bradford. While he's under contract for both 2014 and 2015, it's hard to imagine the team holds onto him. They will likely move on after this year. Shaun Hill is Bradford's replacement, a good caretaker but not anyone we'd trust as a fantasy backup. The passing offense takes a little hit, but you can expect to see a ton of Zac Stacy, Benny Cunningham and Tre Mason going forward. Perhaps the Rams trade for another backup or starter but even then it would take a long time to catch up to speed this late in the preseason. This is a QB situation which you should stay away from this year.
