The Packers picked him up shortly after that trade was voided, and now Roberts is back on the open market due to another failed physical. Roberts suffered a shoulder injury last December and clearly teams have an issue with his recovery and current health status. |

The Patriots were desperate at tight end, with Matt LaCosse as the top man on the depth chart (Ben Watson is suspended the first four games of 2019). The Lions were jam-packed at the position after adding Jesse James in free agency and T.J. Hockenson in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. Roberts has struggled to stay healthy and impress as a pro. However, he was a touchdown hog in college at Toledo and could be re-energized by joining a winning culture like the Patriots have. We'll see how this shakes out in training camp, but Roberts could push for the No. 1 tight end job in New England. |

Detroit Lions TEs Jesse James (6-foot-7, 261 pounds), T.J. Hockenson (6-foot-5, 251), Michael Roberts (6-foot-5, 265) and Logan Thomas (6-foot-6, 250) all possess the ability to detach from the line of scrimmage and create mismatches, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Birkett also notes he wouldn't be surprised if the Lions play with three tight ends on the field at times - even outside goal-line or short-yardage situations.

Detroit Lions TE Michael Roberts is a 'very unique talent' and has a chance to take his performance to another level in 2018, according to general manager Bob Quinn. 'So, we're excited about his future, but I think it's really up to him to kind of take the next step because the talent's there,' Quinn said.
| Footballguys view: We liked Roberts coming out of Toledo last year, mainly because of his Senior Bowl performance and the fact he was a touchdown hog for the Rockets in college. Even though the Lions added Levine Toilolo and Luke Willson in free agency this offseason, Roberts could give them some punch in the red zone. We're watching him with great interest in dynasty leagues...especially in TE premium formats. |

Detroit Lions TE Michael Roberts said he expects to have a bigger role on offense next season and believes he will be an every-down tight end for the Lions.
| Footballguys view: Roberts was a touchdown hog in college and perhaps that is a role he could fill for the Lions. Eric Ebron is still the top tight end for the team, but perhaps Roberts could mix into the offense more than he did as a rookie in 2017. |

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron will not be released as he enters the 2018 season under his fifth-year option. Ebron will be guaranteed $8.25 million when the new league year begins. The inconsistent tight end's presence will limit playing time for fellow TEs Darren Fells and Michael Roberts.
| Footballguys view: Ebron has yet to fully play up to his potential as a pro. The Lions will give him one more go and see if he can finally flourish. Fantasy owners know after three seasons as a TE2 what to expect from Ebron. |

Detroit Lions TE Michael Roberts was declared inactive for Week 17's game against the Green Bay Packers after skipping a team meeting Saturday, Dec. 30. He was also fined by the club for the unexcused absence.
