NFL | Antwaan Randle El to announce retirement    Sat Jul 7, 12:33 AM

Free-agent WR Antwaan Randle El (Steelers) will announce his retirement from the National Football League July 14 at his skills training academy, according to his brother.

Footballguys view: The converted college QB carved out a nice career for himself as a WR and gadget player. Randle El threw the nicest pass in Super Bowl XL when he connected with Hines Ward for a 43-yard TD off a double reverse.

Steelers | Expected to release Antwaan Randle-El    Wed Jul 20, 03:59 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to release WR Antwaan Randle El so they can receive some salary cap relief.

Footballguys view: Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders both proved that they were keepers in their rookie season, which should make ARE's second time around with the Steelers a short stay because the team needs to shed cap room. Cutting Randle-El would save the team his two million dollar 2011 salary.

Steelers | Likely will release Antwaan Randle El    Wed Apr 20, 11:32 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers likely will release WR Antwaan Randle El this offseason, according to Gerry Dulac, of SportingNews.com.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have a good young group of receivers and could ask for more from guys like Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown in 2010.

Steelers | Antwaan Randle El to be No. 3 QB Week 1    Wed Sep 8, 11:05 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antwaan Randle El will serve as the team's emergency quarterback in Week 1, according to Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Randle El will take reps at quarterback during practice this week.

Footballguys view: Randle El converted from quarterback to wide receiver when he entered the league back in 2002, and Steelers fans remember his touchdown pass to Hines Ward in Super Bowl XL. We wouldn't be surprised to see Randle El used on some gadget plays like he used to be in his first stint with the Steelers.

Steelers | Antwaan Randle El could be a favorite for return job    Mon Aug 2, 02:34 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antwaan Randle El may be one of the favorites for the team's primary punt returner job, according to ESPN.com's James Walker.

Footballguys view: Randle El returns to the Steelers after spending the last few years in Washington to help them out in a number of different ways. He could be used as a slot receiver while some of their young guys get used to the pro game, and he's still dangerous as a gadget quarterback and return man.

Redskins | Antwaan Randle El says owner was too involved    Tue Jul 20, 11:36 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antwaan Randle El said Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder was too involved during the tenure of former head coach Jim Zorn, particularly because Snyder did not trust Zorn, according to Vince Vosti, of the Northwest Indiana Times. 'When Jim Zorn was there, he was hands-on,' Randle El said. 'He had great potential, but Dan Snyder was too involved because he didn't trust coach Zorn as much as he did coach (Joe) Gibbs, and those were things that prevented us from success as a team.'

Footballguys view: Dan Snyder too involved? That seems a little far fetched. In all seriousness Randle-El is just sticking up for his old head coach here. Snyder does seem to have backed off now that Mike Shanahan is running the show in Washington. We'll see if that leads to more marks in the win column this year.

Patriots | Made offer to Antwaan Randle El this offseason    Mon Jul 19, 04:07 PM

The New England Patriots made an offer WR Antwaan Randle El this offseason, but he decided to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, reports Vince Vosti of the Northwest Indiana Times.

Footballguys view: Instead of getting Randle-El the Patriots had to settle for veteran Torry Holt. We're not expecting much from Holt, who didn't look like the player we all remember when he played for the Jaguars last season.

Steelers | Sweed could be released    Tue Mar 9, 12:15 PM

ESPN.com reports the Pittsburgh Steelers could release WR Limas Sweed after the team signed WRs Arnaz Battle and Antwaan Randle El.

Footballguys view: Sweed has never lived up to the hype after being a second-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. He has good size, but is not the most sudden receiver and has inconsistent hands. Sweed also has some off field concerns that led to him being placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury/Illness List in December of 2009.

Steelers | Randle El signed    Mon Mar 8, 07:01 PM

Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed unrestricted free-agent WR Antwaan Randle El (Redskins) to a three-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Randle-El is not the same player he was when he left the Steelers, but can step in right away and contribute. He will run some gadget plays for the Steelers, be used as a return man, and provide veteran depth in the WR corps.

Redskins | R. Thomas, Randle El released    Thu Mar 4, 04:55 PM

SIRIUS NFL Radio reports the Washington Redskins have released OG Randy Thomas and WR Antwaan Randle El.

Footballguys view: Antwaan Randle El was not in Shanahan's plans going forward, but could have value to another team. He could still be a productive slot receiver, return man, and even run a little Wildcat QB if necessary.

Redskins | D. Thomas could be involved on punt returns Week 15    Tue Dec 15, 10:33 PM

Jason Reid, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins WR Devin Thomas could be involved on punt returns Week 15. Head coach Jim Zorn indicated during his weekly appearance on ESPN 980's "The Jim Zorn Show" that the team planned to make changes for the final three games at punt returner. WR Antwaan Randle El has struggled as the team's primary punt returner. Zorn said, "We're going to make, you know, some adjustments and things like that. It doesn't mean that Antwaan's going to be totally sitting on the bench the whole time. But we're going to try to get other guys involved. ... We're going to try to get Devin more involved now."

Redskins | Randle El still in the mix for punt returns    Mon Nov 2, 10:05 PM

David Elfin, of The Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins WR Antwaan Randle El is still in the mix for punt returns Week 9, according to a highly placed team source. The team would like to use WR Santana Moss or CB DeAngelo Hall on punt returns, but both are the team's biggest playmakers.

Redskins | Zorn not ready to name starting receiver opposite Moss    Mon Sep 7, 07:54 PM

Jason Reid, of the Washington Post, reports that Redskins head coach Jim Zorn is not ready to name the starting wide receivers for the season opener against the Giants.

Footballguys view: We know that Santana Moss will be one, but the other is up in the air. Devin Thomas had the inside track early in training camp, but he soon yielded to Malcolm Kelly. Neither second-year player shined in camp or the preseason, so the team could turn back to Antwaan Randle-el, who they would probably prefer to put in the slot, but they can't until Kelly or Thomas improve their level of play.

Redskins | Thomas close to 'Z' role    Mon Aug 3, 07:46 PM

Jason Reid, from the Washington Post, reports barring injury or regression expect Thomas to be the starting Z receiver, or flanker, opposite top wideout Santana Moss, the X receiver, or split end. They said it is clear that's the direction the coaching staff would prefer to go, which would enable the Skins to move last year's No. 2 receiver, Antwaan Randle El, to a full-time slot receiver role.

Footballguys view: The Redskins would like either Thomas or Malcolm Kelly to step up into the starting lineup opposite Moss and it sounds like Thomas is doing just that. Thomas can turn short passes into big plays and with his size can be a strong target in the red zone. Randle-El is much better utilized as a slot receiver, and would it hurt to throw in a few more trick plays with the former Indiana quarterback?
