Giants | Curtis Painter practices as backup    Mon Aug 11, 04:06 PM

New York Giants QB Curtis Painter practiced with the second-team ahead of QB Ryan Nassib.

Footballguys view: Nassib is the second-year quarterback who needs to beat out Painter if he wants to make the final roster. We would be surprised if the team kept three quarterbacks this season.

Giants | Ryan Nassib top candidate for No. 2 QB job    Fri Jul 18, 09:42 PM

New York Giants QB Ryan Nassib is entering training camp as the leading candidate for the No. 2 quarterback job and probably will have to really struggle to lose the job to QB Curtis Painter.

Footballguys view: Nassib is a second-year quarterback the Giants are hoping to develop as a potential starter in the future. He spins a nice football, but Nassib will have to beat out the veteran Painter to be the primary backup behind Eli Manning. The Giants are unlikely to keep three quarterbacks on the roster this year.

Giants | Would like Ryan Nassib to win No. 2 QB job    Mon Jun 30, 02:12 PM

The New York Giants would like QB Ryan Nassib to defeat QB Curtis Painter for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp. The team would like to keep two quarterbacks on their final roster but may keep three if Nassib is not able to win the backup job. The team could also consider releasing Nassib if he does not win the job.

Footballguys view: The Giants would like Nassib to be a developmental quarterback with starter's upside. If he can't beat out veteran Curtis Painter in training camp, then it's not a good sign of his current ability. Fantasy owners in deep dynasty leagues need to monitor Nassib's progress.

Giants | Coach praises Curtis Painter    Fri Jun 27, 12:26 PM

New York Giants QB Curtis Painter got praise from quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf for how he has stayed prepared with only limited opportunities. 'He doesn't get very many reps,' Langsdorf said of Painter. 'But fundamentally he's really improved. He's a very accurate thrower and that's his strength. He's gotten more work lately and he's a veteran guy. He knows what that entails and he's done a great job prepping himself. With the limited reps he's gotten, he makes sure he stays sharp.'

Footballguys view: Painter has been around the league for a while, and he does a good job of preparing himself and working hard. He'll compete with second-year quarterback Ryan Nassib for the QB2 job with the Giants behind starter Eli Manning.

Giants | Ryan Nassib works as backup    Wed May 28, 09:33 PM

New York Giants QB Ryan Nassib was working as the primary backup to QB Eli Manning (ankle) during practice Wednesday, May 28, in organized team activities (OTAs). QB Curtis Painter (knee) and QB Josh Freeman also took reps.

Footballguys view: It's really hard to know exactly how to take this, other than perhaps everyone is going to get a shot. On the one hand, Nassib getting those reps is a sign the team is confident enough in his progress to give him a chance to prove himself. On the other hand, this may just be the result of Josh Freeman not knowing the playbook yet and knowing what they have in Painter. We expect Nassib to have to put together a strong preseason and training camp (last year's was not good) in order to win the backup job. This is critical as the Giants tend to hold just a pair of quarterbacks on the roster and if he doesn't win that job, he could end up on the cut list.

Giants | Curtis Painter takes part in OTAs    Wed May 28, 03:58 PM

New York Giants QB Curtis Painter (knee) participated in organized team activities Wednesday, May 28.

Footballguys view: Painter is competing for the backup job behind Eli Manning. His competition for the position includes former first-round pick Josh Freeman and second-year pro Ryan Nassib. The Giants are likely to only carry two quarterbacks, and we don't think Painter will be one of them.

Giants | Keeping options open on Ryan Nassib    Thu May 1, 03:51 PM

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese said he is keeping his options open when it comes to QB Ryan Nassib. 'We like Nassib, but he really hasn't had the chance to do a lot for us, and so we're going to take a real good look at him in the spring. We still think he's a really good player. He hasn't had the chance to play yet, but he's going to get a lot of work this spring, and obviously he'll get a lot of work in the preseason. Along with Curtis Painter and Josh Freeman there's competition.'

Footballguys view: When the Giants picked up Josh Freeman and Curtis Painter, some felt that it spelled doom for second-year player Ryan Nassib, but perhaps not. It could be that the Giants are trying to raise Nassib's trade value, or it could be they like him but don't want to risk the season with an unproven commodity if Manning gets hurt. If Nassib does get traded, it's likely in the next week as we head to the draft.

Giants | Curtis Painter undergoes surgery    Mon Apr 28, 02:17 PM

New York Giants QB Curtis Painter (knee) underwent knee surgery Friday, April 25. Painter is expected to be sidelined for around four weeks.

Footballguys view: Painter is not a lock to make the final roster. The Giants have added both Josh Freeman and Rusty Smith in free agency this offseason. There will be a competition in training camp with Ryan Nassib for the primary backup job behind Eli Manning.

Giants | Have interest in Curtis Painter    Tue Mar 4, 11:50 PM

The New York Giants have some interest in bringing back impending free-agent QB Curtis Painter, but nothing appears imminent.

Footballguys view: The market won't be hot (or even lukewarm) for Painter. They'll be able to bring him back at a good price.

Giants | Coach says Curtis Painter won No. 2 QB job    Sun Sep 1, 11:51 AM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said the team decided to keep QB Curtis Painter over QB David Carr because Painter performed better during the preseason. 'We simply based it on the preseason,' Coughlin said. 'From the standpoint of all the evaluations, it pointed to the fact that Painter had a better preseason.'

Footballguys view: Eli Manning is one of the most durable quarterbacks in the league, so we are only slightly more likely to see Painter this year as we are to see Carr, even if Carr remains a free agent for the entire season.

Giants | David Carr expected to win backup job    Thu Aug 29, 01:20 PM

New York Giants QB David Carr is expected to win the backup quarterback job over QB Curtis Painter, according to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPNNewYork.com.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Carr has the experience edge over Painter and he's just a better QB. We'll see rookie Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) as the Giants third-string developmental prospect.

Giants | Curtis Painter to be second QB in game    Thu Aug 22, 09:24 PM

Giants | All four QBs expected to play    Thu Aug 8, 10:01 PM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said the team will try to get all four quarterbacks in their first preseason game. QB Eli Manning will start the game and get 12 to 15 snaps. QB David Carr will be the second quarterback in, but Coughlin did not say if QB Curtis Painter or QB Ryan Nassib will be the third quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Giants know what they have in Carr. We'd like to see the rookie Nassib get more playing time in the preseason to determine who much work he has to do at the pro level.

Giants | Two work out    Fri Nov 16, 09:00 AM

The New York Giants worked out RB Ryan Torain and QB Curtis Painter this week.

Footballguys view: The Giants have been working out running backs during their bye week, which is potentially a bad sign for Ahmad Bradshaw. Andre Brown should be rostered in all leagues. He would take over as the feature back if Bradshaw is out, and Brown can play all three downs. First-round pick David Wilson is still not ready for a large role by most accounts.

Ravens | Battle at backup quarterback?    Tue Aug 7, 05:53 PM

Baltimore Ravens QB Curtis Painter is challenging QB Tyrod Taylor for the team's No. 2 quarterback duties during training camp. Taylor is a dual-threat option at quarterback, able to make plays with his legs, while Painter is more of a pocket passer. Painter has had bouts of erratic play and thrown plenty of interceptions. Thus far, Painter has not made a strong case for the team to carry three quarterbacks into the regular season.

Footballguys view: Painter is comfortable with Ravens QB coach Jim Caldwell (his former head coach at Indianapolis). Taylor's skill set is better but he's extremely raw as a passer.

Ravens | Tyrod Taylor will have edge entering camp    Thu Jul 5, 01:34 PM

Baltimore Ravens QB Tyrod Taylor will enter training camp as the favorite for the No. 2 quarterback over QB Curtis Painter.

Footballguys view: Taylor has a very strong arm, experience in the system, and incredible athletic ability. Painter has experience working with new Ravens QB coach Jim Caldwell from their time together with the Colts.

Ravens | Tyrod Taylor trying to hold off Curtis Painter    Sat Jun 30, 09:54 PM

Baltimore Ravens QB Tyrod Taylor will try to hold off a challenge from QB Curtis Painter for the primary backup job to QB Joe Flacco in training camp. QBs John Brantley and Chester Stewart are also on the roster, but considered longshots for the role.

Footballguys view: Taylor is incredibly athletic and has a rocket arm. However, his accuracy needs a lot of work as does his decision making. He'll battle in training camp with the more experienced Painter to be the backup.

Ravens | Curtis Painter signed    Thu Apr 19, 03:52 PM

The Baltimore Ravens have signed free-agent Curtis Painter (Colts). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Painter tried out for the team with Dennis Dixon and Kyle Boller also vying for the job. Tyrod Taylor is the primary backup behind Joe Flacco, and Painter will compete for that spot on the depth chart. He has a previous working relationship with QBs coach Jim Caldwell from their time together with the Colts.

Ravens | Dennis Dixon, Curtis Painter try out    Thu Apr 19, 01:34 AM

The Baltimore Ravens worked out free-agent QBs Dennis Dixon (Steelers) and Curtis Painter (Colts) Wednesday, April 18.

The Baltimore Ravens are working out free-agent QBs Kyle Boller (Raiders), Dennis Dixon (Steelers) and Curtis Painter (Colts) Wednesday, April 18.

Footballguys view: Interesting to note they would consider bringing back Boller as he was a first-round bust for them years ago. The Ravens are looking for competition at the backup QB position. Currently they only have Tyrod Taylor as the primary backup behind Joe Flacco.

Colts | Dan Orlovsky to start    Tue Nov 29, 02:32 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Dan Orlovsky will start over QB Curtis Painter in Week 13 versus the New England Patriots, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Orlovsky has gone 14-for-21 with 122 yards this season.

Footballguys view: The Patriots secondary is not good, so Orlovsky has a chance to put up some decent stats. We're not recommending Orlovsky as a fantasy addition, but he may be able to breathe life into this passing game.

Colts | Curtis Painter throws two INTs    Sun Nov 27, 06:08 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter went 15-for-29 for 226 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Week 12 against the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: Painter made a couple of beautiful downfield throws to Reggie Wayne, but otherwise had the Colts offense sputtering most of the time. He had a season Colts fans will want to forget.

Colts | Curtis Painter to get start    Wed Nov 23, 12:31 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter will start at quarterback in Week 12.

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter went 13-for-19 for 94 yards and two interceptions in Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. QB Dan Orlovsky replaced Painter during the game and went 7-for-10 for 67 yards.

Footballguys view: Painter even had an interception overturned only to throw another one a few plays later. He is the worst starting QB in the league and we wouldn't be surprised if the Colts spend their bye preparing Orlovsky to start in week 12.

Colts | Curtis Painter replaced    Sun Nov 13, 04:39 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter was benched Week 10 and replaced by QB Dan Orlovsky.

Colts | Curtis Painter still the starter    Mon Nov 7, 06:53 PM

Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell said QB Curtis Painter is still the team's starting quarterback despite benching him in Week 9 in favor of QB Dan Orlovsky. Painter was 13-of-27 for just 98 yards while throwing one interception.

Colts | Curtis Painter struggles     Sun Nov 6, 05:38 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter went 13-for-27 for 98 yards and one interception against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9.

Colts | Curtis Painter benched Week 9    Sun Nov 6, 04:25 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter was benched in favor of QB Dan Orlovsky during the team's Week 9 game and there was no word of any injuries for Painter.

Footballguys view: Painter's play has gotten steadily worse each game. The Colts should see what Orlovsky has before the offense completely deteriorates.

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter went 26-for-49 for 250 yards and two interceptions against the Tennessee Titans in Week 8. He also rushed for 79 yards on seven carries in the game.

Footballguys view: Painter had a much better performance than last week, reviving the fantasy value of his receiving targets, but he is still one of the worst QBs in the league, both in fantasy and real NFL terms.

Colts | Dan Orlovsky spells Curtis Painter in blowout    Sun Oct 23, 11:02 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter completed nine of his 17 pass attempts for just 67 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints. He also lost a fumble. Painter was lifted in the fourth quarter with the score at 62-7, as QB Dan Orlovsky replaced him.

Footballguys view: Painter was a total dud, even with a lot of catchup time to air it out. He becomes a tough start in any given week now that the bottom has dropped out of the Colts pass offense.

Colts | Curtis Painter productive Week 5    Sun Oct 9, 05:44 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter went 15-for-27 for 277 yards and two touchdowns against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 5.

Footballguys view: Painter was on fire in the first half and nearly perfect, but he regressed in the second half. He didn't look as uncomfortable as he did vs. the Buccaneers and he'll remain a decent emergency QB play with the ability to keep Pierre Garcon and maybe even Reggie Wayne viable in fantasy leagues. Austin Collie and Dallas Clark are borderline droppable at this point.

Colts | Curtis Painter holds his own in first NFL start    Tue Oct 4, 12:05 AM

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter completed 13 of 30 passes for 281 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 4 game Monday, Oct. 3, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his first NFL start. He also lost a fumble. Painter's 87-yard TD pass to WR Pierre Garcon in the second quarter was the first scoring strike of his career. It was the longest first TD pass to start a career since Pittsburgh Steelers QB Charlie Batch, then of the Detroit Lions, had a 98-yard TD throw to start his career back in 1998.

Footballguys view: Painter zeroed in on Garcon when he came in during the week 3 game vs. Pittsburgh, so this wasn't shocking. He is clearly a better option than Kerry Collins, although he still looked nervous at times and should probably be considered a bottom of the barrel fantasy option.
