49ers | Jerick McKinnon struggles mightily    Sun Nov 15, 10:15 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon rushed 18 times for just 33 yards, or 1.8 yards per attempt, in Week 10 against the New Orleans Saints. He also added a 13-yard catch on three targets.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon scores late in loss    Fri Nov 6, 01:10 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon carried 12 times for 52 yards and a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, Nov. 5. McKinnon also caught three passes for 16 yards.

Footballguys view: After being used sparingly for a few weeks because of "tired legs", McKinnon was the lead back in Week 9 and posted a solid game thanks to a garbage time score. He'll have an RB2 outlook next week against the Saints if Tevin Coleman (knee) isn't ready to return.

  49ers | San Francisco's Week 4 injury report    Fri Oct 2, 04:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers DL Dee Ford (back), QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), LB Dre Greenlaw (quad), CB Emmanuel Moseley (concussion), RB Raheem Mostert (knee) and TE Jordan Reed (knee) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles. CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring) did not practice Friday, Oct. 2, and has also been ruled out. CB K'Waun Williams (hip) was limited in practice for a second straight day Friday and is listed as questionable. TE George Kittle (knee) and RB Jerick McKinnon (ribs) practiced in full all week and have been removed from the injury report.

Footballguys view: Deebo Samuel will return this week. That hurts Brandon Aiyuk's outlook but helps Nick Mullens. Samuel is risky in his first game back from foot surgery, but should be a WR3/Flex once he's established and can help teams that need to replace a Steelers or Titans receiver.

  49ers | Jerick McKinnon day-to-day    Mon Sep 28, 07:38 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (ribs) is considered day-to-day because of injured ribs.

Footballguys view: McKinnon has fantasy value even when Raheem Mostert returns as the lead back. He's been banged up for two previous seasons with the 49ers -- playing in zero games -- but has looked good this year. They'll take it easy on him as he deals with this ribs injury which basically will come down to pain tolerance.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon reaches end zone    Sun Sep 27, 04:37 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon rushed for 38 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries against the New York Giants in Week 3. He also caught three passes for 39 yards during the game.

Footballguys view: McKinnon got more of the work early, but was the less productive fantasy back in the 49ers backfield today. He did have a touchdown catch wiped off of the board by a penalty and showed he is flexworthy if Raheem Mostert is out again next week.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon looking sharp    Fri Aug 7, 09:20 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) has looked sharp catching passes out of the backfield during training camp, according to QB Jimmy Garoppolo. 'Even just throwing routes on air this offseason, he runs them differently than most running backs and he has a feel that's like a receiver, but he feels space like a quarterback,' Garoppolo said.

Footballguys view: McKinnon has had knee problems that have kept him out of action over the last two years with the 49ers. He restructured his deal to stay with the team earlier this offseason and is finally trying to show what he's got. McKinnon is in the mix for playing time with Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Jeffrey Wilson also vying for playing time.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon to have third-down opportunities    Sat May 30, 05:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon will have opportunities on third downs in 2020, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Footballguys view: McKinnon accepted a re-worked contract to stay with the team this offseason. Signed a couple of years ago, McKinnon has missed the past two seasons with the 49ers due to injury. We'll see if he can stay healthy, make the 53-man roster and contribute as a receiving back in 2020.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon not cutting yet    Sun May 10, 10:24 AM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is nearing the end of his rehab process, where he will shift his focus from running straight ahead to attempting to 'simulate some of the cutting that goes on at that position, specifically.'

Footballguys view: McKinnon has a thin margin to make the team. He needs to get healthy ASAP and prove that he belongs on the team, especially with such a jam-packed RB room. McKinnon signed with the 49ers in 2018 but has not played a down for them in two seasons. He re-worked his contract earlier this offseason just to get a chance to stay with the 49ers.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon rehab update    Sat May 9, 10:43 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) plans to work out this offseason at Washington Redskins RB Adrian Peterson's gym in Houston, as he continues to recover from a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. McKinnon said his knee feels normal and he hasn't experienced any pain or soreness recently. He has been doing a lot of running, including hill sprints, as well as balance work since being medically cleared to resume working out in February.

Footballguys view: McKinnon signed with the 49ers in 2018 and has not played a down of football for them. Over the last two seasons, McKinnon has missed time with this knee injury. He accepted a restructured contract and a pay cut earlier this offseason just to stay with the team. The backfield is jam-packed with talent, so McKinnon's chances of making the 53-man roster is not guaranteed. We'll see if he can stay healthy and make the squad in 2020.

49ers | JaMycal Hasty to compete for roster spot    Sun May 3, 01:43 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB JaMycal Hasty is expected to compete with RB Jerick McKinnon for the third-down back job during training camp. Hasty is expected to also be a solid contributor on special teams.

Footballguys view: Hasty was a dangerous pass-catching weapon for the Baylor offense. The 2020 undrafted free agent should be a third-down weapon in the pros. Hasty does a good job of eluding linebackers in space and understands how to stack moves. He's got a high football intelligence and is quick in his reaction time when defenders are oncoming. McKinnon was signed two years ago and has yet to play a down for the 49ers due to injury. He took a pay cut this year to stay with the team but his spot on the 53-man roster is no guarantee.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon has chance to make team    Sat Apr 4, 05:24 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon likely will make the final roster if he can stay healthy because he can be a third down back and a target in the passing game, in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Footballguys view: McKinnon has not played a single snap for the 49ers over the last two years. He re-worked his contract this offseason to stay around for another shot with the team. The 49ers have a jam-packed backfield and McKinnon is certainly no lock to make the 53-man roster.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon agreed to a restructured contract Tuesday, March 17, and will return to the team for the 2020 season, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Even with a restructured deal, McKinnon is no lock for the final roster. He has not played a single down for the 49ers over the last two years after signing a lucrative deal in free agency. We'll see if he can impress enough in training camp to earn a roster spot.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon to be asked for pay cut    Tue Feb 25, 03:17 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon will be asked to take a pay cut for the 2020 season, according to general manager John Lynch Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Footballguys view: McKinnon signed a four-year, $30 million deal with the 49ers two years ago (with $18 million guaranteed) and hasn't played a down of football for them due to injuries. He's on the books for an $8.5 million cap hit in 2020 with $4 million remaining in dead money. McKinnon should be quite willing to take a pay cut in order to stay with the team.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon wants to return    Wed Feb 5, 03:32 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon said he hopes to remain with the 49ers and indicated that he would be open to restructuring his contract.

Footballguys view: McKinnon (knee) is scheduled to count $8.55 million against the 2020 salary cap, and releasing him would save $4.55 million in '20. He has a 2021 option year at $9.2 million against that year's cap. In 2018, McKinnon signed a four-year, $30 million contract with the 49ers...and knee problems have kept him from playing a down for them in two seasons. We'll see if they restructure McKinnon or just let him go and eat the dead money.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon contract forecast    Mon Jan 13, 09:59 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is scheduled to count $8.55 million against the 2020 salary cap, and releasing him would save $4.55 million in '20. He has a 2021 option year at $9.2 million against that year's cap.

Footballguys view: The 49ers have plenty of other options at the running back position. McKinnon passing a physical will determine how his contract savings are factored, and $2.6 million of his $6.5 million base salary is scheduled to be guaranteed as of April 1.

49ers | Surgery for Jerick McKinnon    Fri Sep 6, 09:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) had surgery on his right knee Tuesday, Sept. 3, and he said he hopes to be back with the team next season. 'These guys have a good plan for me,' McKinnon said. 'It's about staying mentally in it and support my teammates, and doing what I need to do to make sure I'm healthy coming back next year.'

Footballguys view: McKinnon is under contract through the 2021 season. If the 49ers get rid of him next offseason there would be a $4 million cap hit.

49ers | San Francisco announces roster moves    Sat Aug 31, 09:31 PM

The San Francisco 49ers released OG Josh Garnett Saturday, Aug. 31, and waived/injured DB Adrian Colbert and OL Andrew Lauderdale. RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) and WR Nick Williams (undisclosed) were placed on the Reserve/Injured list, TE Garrett Celek (undisclosed) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, and LS Kyle Nelson was moved to the suspended list. DB Antone Exum, LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, DE Jamell Garcia-Williams, DL Kevin Givens, S Marcell Harris, TE Daniel Helm, WR Malik Henry, LB Elijah Lee, LB David Mayo, DE Damontre Moore, LB LaRoy Reynolds, OG Ross Reynolds, S Tyree Robinson, QB Wilton Speight, WR Chris X. Thompson, DL Jordan Thompson, OL Najee Toran, DE Jeremiah Valoaga, RB Austin Walter and RB Jeffery Wilson were waived.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon out for season    Sat Aug 31, 04:26 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Aug. 31, and he will be out for the entire season.

Footballguys view: McKinnon just struggled to get healthy and now will be shut down for all of 2019. This is after he missed all of the 2018 season with this knee problem. McKinnon is likely to get released next spring and will have to prove that he's healthy just to get a shot somewhere else if/when he's released.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is expected to be placed on the Reserve/Injured list, according to sources, but it is unclear if he will miss the entire season.

Footballguys view: McKinnon just can't get healthy. He returned to practice last week but suffered a setback which put him on Injured Reserve. The 49ers have Tevin Coleman as their lead back and Matt Breida to back him up.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon suffers setback    Wed Aug 28, 12:37 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) suffered a setback with his surgically repaired knee Tuesday, Aug. 27, and general manager John Lynch said: 'it's not encouraging.'

Footballguys view: McKinnon was back to practice this week, but we wanted to see what he experienced after working out his knee. It sounds like what he experienced was discomfort at least and a setback that puts his status for Week 1 in doubt. Tevin Coleman will lead the way on the ground for the 49ers with Matt Breida backing him up.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) took part in practice Tuesday, Aug. 27, for the first time since suffering a setback with his surgically repaired knee in early August, according to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group.

Footballguys view: It's a good sign for McKinnon but he is far from playing in a game. We'll have to see if he experiences any soreness after practicing the first time in about a month.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is not expected to take part in team drills this week as he continues to wait for his injured knee to respond to platelet-rich plasma injection he had 17 days ago.

Footballguys view: McKinnon might be able to participate in drills next week, and we think he's unlikely to be ready for the start of the regular season. The 49ers will use Tevin Coleman as their primary back with Matt Breida backing him up. McKinnon might begin the season on Injured Reserve.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) was held out of practice Thursday, Aug. 8, due to soreness in his knee after practicing the last two days. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters McKinnon will receive a platelet rich plasma injection in his knee and miss the next two weeks of practice before returning to practice.

Footballguys view: Two weeks might be a bit optimistic. McKinnon is no sure bet to be ready for the start of the regular season. The 49ers will continue to see Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida compete for the top spot on the depth chart.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon activated from PUP list    Tue Aug 6, 01:00 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) was activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, Aug. 6.

Footballguys view: McKinnon might not be ready to play or practice at full speed right away and has to be considered the #3 back right now and a possible healthy scratch on game days to begin the season, which might make his 3.7 million dollar salary too much to carry into the season.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is expected to remain on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list until at least Monday, Aug. 5.

Footballguys view: Reports from around the team says there was a 'flare up' for McKinnon's knee. We'll see if he can get activated and get out there next week for the 49ers. While McKinnon is out, the 49ers are getting long looks at Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list but could be activated as soon as Thursday, Aug. 1, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Footballguys view: That's a best case scenario for McKinnon after his flare up. He's still at a disadvantage in the backfield battle for snaps and is probably going to be third in line for snaps and touches at running back without a dazzling summer.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon begins camp on PUP    Fri Jul 26, 02:37 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) recently had a 'flare-up' with his surgically repaired knee - according to general manager John Lynch - and was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 26. Lynch told reporters his stay on the PUP list is expected to be a short one, however.

Footballguys view: McKinnon might not even make the team if he can't get healthy before the close of camp. This is a longer than usual recovery from an ACL tear with advances in rehab, so McKinnon is officially behind schedule.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon expects to receive clearance    Mon Jun 24, 01:33 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is expected to receive clearance near the start of training camp, as he makes his way back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Footballguys view: McKinnon is due 3.7 million this year, which is probably low enough to keep him on the roster as long as he is good to go for Week 1, but if he is outplayed by Matt Breida in camp, he could be inactive on game days without an injury to another back. His redraft value is dropping.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon may be ready for camp    Wed Jun 12, 05:15 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) hopefully will be a full participant when training camp begins, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Footballguys view: McKinnon is going to have to compete with Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida in training camp. It's looking like it could be a three-headed RBBC for the 49ers in 2019. McKinnon has a current ADP of RB40 (8.12) in 12-team PPR leagues. Coleman has an ADP of RB31 (6.10) and Brieda is coming off the board at RB56 (14.02) at this time.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon missing workouts    Sat May 25, 05:44 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is not participating in offseason workouts but is expected to be available for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: The 49ers backfield is jam-packed with talent...but most of those guys are banged up right now. In addition to McKinnon being banged up, the team has Raheem Mostert (arm) and Matt Breida (pectoral) also battling injuries at this time. When healthy, McKinnon should be splitting time/touches with free agent addition Tevin Coleman.

49ers | 3-headed RB monster in San Fran?    Thu May 16, 12:34 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida said Wednesday, May 15, the team could feature a three-man running back rotation also involving Jerick McKinnon and Tevin Coleman. 'They've talked to us about it,' Breida said. 'They've said, 'Hey, we're going to use all you guys.' All three of us are going to be used a lot. I don't want to give away any secrets, but we're all going to be used in the offense.' It's still too early/unclear how snaps will be divided.

Footballguys view: This would be a problem for Fantasy GMs trying to manage a weekly starting lineup. We'll get a better feel about this clear RBBC in training camp and the preseason. At this time, the earliest drafted 49ers running back is Tevin Coleman at RB30 (6.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Nothing decided yet in San Fran's backfield    Fri Apr 5, 02:11 PM

San Francisco 49ers RBs Tevin Coleman Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida, Jeffery Wilson and Raheem Mostert will ultimately decide who plays and how much each one plays, according to comments made by head coach Kyle Shanahan on the Adam Schefter podcast recently.'Everyone keeps asking me that like I'm in charge of that or something,' Shanahan said with a laugh. 'It's up to the players. They will define their roles. That's kind of what's unique about this.'

Footballguys view: The 49ers have a collection of backs with similar skill sets. They're likely to use some form of RBBC, mainly featuring Coleman and Breida. We'll see if McKinnon (or any of the other backs on the roster) can work themselves into the mix.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon sticking around    Mon Mar 25, 12:04 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) will remain on the roster past April 1 and 'fits' into the team's plan for the 2019 season, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: McKinnon's future with the team was certainly a question mark when the team went out and added Tevin Coleman in free agency while also giving Raheem Mostert a new three-year deal. We should see McKinnon compete with Coleman for the top spot on the depth chart. On April 1st, $3.7 million on McKinnon's 2019 salary becomes guaranteed.

San Francisco 49ers RB Tevin Coleman is expected to lead what could be a group of four active running backs on game days this season. Coleman and fellow RBs Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert would comprise the foursome.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is on schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament last year and is expected to be the No. 1 running back for the 49ers this season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Footballguys view: McKinnon was set to be the lead back for the 49ers until he got hurt last year. He'll come back this year after missing all of last season and should split time with Matt Breida in the 49ers backfield.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is reportedly 'six weeks ahead in terms of time frame' as he continues to make his way back from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered during the preseason, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: McKinnon was signed to be the lead back, although Matt Breida was reportedly going to be in a committee with him before McKinnon's injury. Breida was impressive but couldn't stay healthy last year, so expect the team to employ a committee that should be fluid in terms of workload from game to game.

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) was recently seen catching passes from QB Jimmy Garoppolo, general manager John Lynch said Tuesday, Jan. 22, in an interview.

Footballguys view: McKinnon was supposed to be the top back for the 49ers in 2018 but he missed the entire season due to this knee injury. That led the emergence of Matt Breida in the 49ers backfield. We should see McKinnon and Breida work in a RBBC of some form in 2019.

San Francisco 49ers RBs Jerick McKinnon (knee) and Matt Breida will likely see significant time on the field together in 2019, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Footballguys view: This plan certainly hurts the dynasty stock for McKinnon as he won't truly be 'the man' for the 49ers when he's back in action next season. That being said, McKinnon worked well in a RBBC last year with the Vikings (Latavius Murray) and still finished as the 24th ranked fantasy RB in standard-scoring leagues.

Footballguys view: McKinnon is done for the season but this is a positive sign for his recovery. He had knee surgery back in mid-September and should hopefully be ready to return to action by the time training camp rolls around in August 2019.
