| Footballguys view: Martinez was one of the leading tacklers in the NFL for four straight years before tearing an ACL last year. He didn't seem to be a great fit in new defensive coordinator Wink Martindale's defense, but was the only experienced middle linebacker on the roster. Still the move was reported as mutually agreed upon. Darrian Beavers, a sixth round pick and inside linebacker, already went down with a torn ACL. Fifth round pick Micah McFadden or perhaps veteran Austin Calitro could fill the void. The team already restructured Martinez's deal (including a pay cut) earlier in the offseason, so the move will only save them 200,000 in cap room and cost 7.5 million in dead cap - putting them at over 42 million this year, with only a few days left now to clear about five million in cap room before the season starts. Tae Crowder is the most valuable IDP linebacker on the team now. |

RB Wayne Gallman rushed 11 times for 65 yards, while WR Sterling Shepard had eight receptions for a game-high 112 yards with a touchdown, and he ran twice for 24 yards and a score. WR Dante Pettis added two receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown, while WR Darius Slayton closed the regular season with two catches and 22 yards on four targets. TE Evan Engram was also targeted four times, ending up with two catches and 17 yards. LB Blake Martinez ended up with 11 total stops, a sack, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit, and DE Leonard Williams had three sacks.
