Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes enters concussion protocol    Mon Jan 18, 01:08 PM

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (concussion, toe) was placed in the league's concussion protocol Monday, Jan. 18.

Footballguys view: Mahomes will have to go through the protocol before he's cleared to play in the AFC Championship Game. He's likely to be ready to go, but it may take until the end of the week before he can even get a limited practice in. Stay tuned, and also keep track of the toe problem that seemed to slow down Mahomes in the game against the Browns.

Chiefs | Kansas City advances to championship game    Sun Jan 17, 06:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (concussion) went 21-for-30 for 255 yards and one touchdown against the Cleveland Browns in the Divisional Round playoff game before leaving with a concussion. He also rushed for 14 yards and one touchdown on three carries. QB Chad Henne went 6-for-8 for 66 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception in relief. RB Darrel Williams rushed for 78 yards on 13 carries. WR Tyreek Hill caught eight passes for 110 yards on 10 targets, TE Travis Kelce caught eight passes for 109 yards and one touchdown on 11 targets and WR Mecole Hardman caught four passes for 58 yards on four targets.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs had to win this game to advance without superstar QB Patrick Mahomes to finish the game as he was concussed. Some bold plays by veteran backup QB Chad Henne helped the Chiefs get the win. They iced the game with a fourth-down pass play to WR Tyreek Hill. The Chiefs will see if Mahomes can get through the concussion protocol next week as they prepare to face the Bills at home in the AFC Championship Game.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, WR Tyreek Hill and TE Travis Kelce are among the players most likely to get the day off in Week 17 after head coach Andy Reid suggested that 'certain guys will have the opportunity to rest up' in the regular-season finale versus the Los Angeles Chargers.

Footballguys view: Just another example in the long line of 'don't play your fantasy championship in Week 17' stories. The Chiefs have wrapped up the lone bye in the AFC and do not need to risk anything in a meaningless game.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes throws for two TDs    Sun Dec 27, 04:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes went 24-for-44 for 278 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 16.

Footballguys view: Mahomes was not sharp and wouldn't have had a chance to win if AJ Terrell had held onto a ball in the end zone late in the game. Fantasy teams that were relying on him need help from their supporting cast as the Chiefs offense didn't seem very interested for stretches of this game. He won't play much next week as the Chiefs have locked up the #1 seed.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 24 of his 32 pass attempts for 211 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-20 win over the Houston Texans in Week 1.

Footballguys view: Mahomes barely broke a sweat in this one. If Clyde Edwards-Helaire was better on goal line carries, it might have been a bust week for Mahomes in fantasy leagues, but you have to feel good about him based on how easily the Chiefs moved the ball. Next week brings the Chargers, who have given Mahomes a hard time.

Part of that success is due to the high-quality targets like Tyreek Hill but a large part is just the skill set he has. Mahomes has great anticipation as a thrower and does a good job placing passes correctly and in stride to maximize yards after the catch. He's the best quarterback in the game, and it's a joy to watch Mahomes play. We look forward to his QB1 production for Fantasy GMs once again in 2020.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes off to record start    Thu Jun 4, 09:46 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes' 93.7 Pro Football Focus grade is the highest of any quarterback over their first three seasons in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Mahomes might just be getting started. An injury slowed him down last year, but the team is returning their entire wide receiver group intact from 2019 and he added Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the best receiving back in the draft. Mahomes reportedly said "Clyde" when asked who he wanted the team to take in the first round. Even though waiting at quarterback is in vogue in fantasy drafts, Mahomes can still be a great pick at ADP if he returns to 2018 statistical form.

'We want him to play his entire career in Kansas City, and that's what we're going to be shooting for.'

Footballguys view: Mahomes is going to set the new mark for quarterbacks. We could see him get a deal that pays him around $50 million per year. No matter what, the Chiefs aren't going to let him hit the open market anytime soon.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes confident in process    Fri May 1, 02:40 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said Friday, May 1, that he is confident he will receive a new long-term contract long before his current deal expires at the end of the 2021 season. 'Obviously I want to be a Chief for a long time,' Mahomes said. 'I want to have a contract that says that and I can go out there and know I have that security. I understand and trust the Chiefs' organization and everybody in it that they're gonna handle it the right way. I trust my representation that they're going to ease my mind and let me go out there and just love the game I love playing. So for me, whenever that happens, it happens. But I'm gonna focus on being the best football player I can be every single day.'

Footballguys view: We're not worried about this. Mahomes will soon be the highest-paid quarterback in the league and he should get a contract that is larger than any other in NFL history. The Chiefs are not letting him go anywhere, and Mahomes could be a dominant force in the AFC West for a decade-plus.

In the meantime, the Chiefs can start working on a long-term extension that makes Mahomes the highest-paid quarterback in the league by a wide margin. Who knows when that will actually happen but make no mistake about it, they will sign him to the largest contract in NFL history when they can.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes says on an upcoming episode of the HBO series The Shop: Uninterrupted, that he didn't truly learn how to read opposing defenses until the second half of the 2019 season.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes' most likely window for a contract extension is sometime after the NFL draft.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have Mahomes under control for the next two seasons but there is no reason to wait. Instead, they need to get a deal done that makes Mahomes the highest-paid player in league history. So long as he stays healthy, the price is only going to go up for the superstar quarterback.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes joined Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger and New England Patriots QB Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl before the age of 25. Both Roethlisberger and Brady have gone on to win multiple titles in their careers.

Footballguys view: Mahomes is likely to win multiple championships as well. If the Chiefs play things right, they could be building a dynasty with Mahomes leading the way. They have an opportunity to be Super Bowl contenders for a decade so long as Mahomes is their quarterback. They should give him a new contract that makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history, but they do have him under contract for the next two seasons.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 26 of his 42 passes for 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, and he rushed nine times for 29 yards and a touchdown in a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV Sunday, Feb. 2. RB Damien Williams rushed 17 times for 104 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 29 yards and a score. WR Tyreek Hill caught nine of his 16 targets for 105 yards, WR Sammy Watkins hauled in five passes for 98 yards, and TE Travis Kelce caught all six of his targets for 43 yards and a touchdown. SS Bashaud Breeland finished with a team-high seven tackles, including two tackles for loss, and a pass defensed.

Footballguys view: Mahomes was cold for three and a half quarters, but a third and long conversion against a tired 49ers pass rush seemed to light the fuse. Williams had a strong finish to the game with a clinching score, and Watkins redeemed himself after a quiet season except for a huge Week 1. Kelce was also important when the offense needed a conversion. The Chiefs completed a thrilling postseason that saw them come back from double digit deficits in every game.

That's the best record among quarterbacks in that scenario (minimum five starts).

Footballguys view: Mahomes just excels no matter which defense he's playing. In the Super Bowl, he will be facing a 49ers defense that ranked No.1 in the NFL in 2019 by only allowing an average of 169.2 passing yards per game.

Footballguys view: Mahomes is eligible to get a contract extension this offseason and the sooner the better for the Chiefs because his price is just going to keep going up.
