NFL | Thomas Jones would like to continue playing    Fri May 18, 03:22 PM

Free-agent RB Thomas Jones (Chiefs) would like to continue his playing career but has not received a lot of interest this offseason.

Footballguys view: Jones isn't the same player he used to be and is unlikely to get much interest even when injuries hit the Running Back position in camp.

Chiefs | Thomas Jones may retire    Sun Feb 26, 05:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones is not expected to return to the team and may contemplate retirement this offseason.

Footballguys view: Jones is not the same player he used to be and could decide to walk away from the game in 2012.

  Chiefs | A possibility for BenJarvus Green-Ellis?    Wed Feb 15, 08:14 AM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis would be a good fit for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs will likely be looking for a running back to pair with RB Jamaal Charles (knee), who is coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Impending free-agent RB Thomas Jones likely won't be brought back and while RB Jackie Battle likely could have a future in Kansas City, an upgrade may be needed.

Footballguys view: Scott Pioli knows Green-Ellis well from his time in New England, so this is a good connection to draw. The Chiefs will be active at RB in the draft and free agency one way or the other.

Chiefs | Trio left to carry ball in Week 17    Thu Dec 29, 12:50 AM

Kansas City Chiefs interim coach Romeo Crennel said Wednesday, Dec. 28, that the team doesn't have a lot of depth in the backfield for Week 17 if RB Jackie Battle (foot) cannot play. 'You might say we're borderline as far as depth goes,' Crennel said. FB Le'Ron McClain might get carries along with RBs Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster. The team also has RB Shaun Draughn on the practice squad, and he might be promoted for added depth.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones had 13 carries for 37 yards in Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, leading a three-headed rushing attack. Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones had eight carries for a team-high 48 yards in Week 11 against the New England Patriots Monday, Nov. 21. RB Dexter McCluster also had eight rushes for 39 yards, while RB Jackie Battle chipped in with eight runs for 33 yards.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs were effective running the ball, but they didn't feed any one back enough to make them relevant for fantasy.

Chiefs | Thomas Jones does little in limited role    Tue Nov 1, 01:12 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones had just five carries for 10 yards in the Week 8 game Monday, Oct. 31, against the San Diego Chargers. He also did not have any receptions. The carries and yardage totals were his fewest since Week 1. He has been passed on the depth chart by RB Jackie Battle, who is now the feature back. RB Dexter McCluster also saw nine touches to Jones' five.

Chiefs | Jackie Battle could see bigger workload    Thu Oct 6, 11:45 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs could turn to RB Jackie Battle earlier in their Week 5 game. Battle has emerged as a viable part of the rotation at running back after securing a huge first down late in the team's Week 4 game. With the Chiefs limiting RB Dexter McCluster because of his diminutive size and with RB Thomas Jones and FB Le'Ron McClain being ineffective running the ball, Battle should see more playing time.

Footballguys view: Battle is a versatile player who can be used effectively as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. He doesn't have elite gifts and is still going to be used in a 3-headed RBBC. That's why we're not expecting Battle to be much of a fantasy factor, even if he does get a bigger workload.

Chiefs | Thomas Jones struggles in Week 3 loss    Sun Sep 25, 09:09 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones had 14 carries for just 31 yards in Week 3 against the San Diego Chargers. He also had a two-yard reception in his first game starting in place of RB Jamaal Charles (knee), who is lost for the season.

Footballguys view: Jones is barely worth rostering, even as the lead back for his team.

Chiefs | Thomas Jones will not have limit    Sat Sep 24, 05:18 PM

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Bill Muir said there is will be no limit to how many carries RB Thomas Jones will get in Week 3. 'Wherever he's been, he's loved to carry the ball,' Muir said. 'We understand his age. No, we don't have a plan. We'll (give him the ball) until his tongue is hanging out.'

Footballguys view: We think Jones will be the primary ball carrier when the score is close. However, when they fall behind they could turn to Dexter McCluster instead.

Chiefs | Will use committee at RB    Wed Sep 21, 02:12 PM

Updating a previous report, the Kansas City Chiefs will be using a running back by committee approach because of the injury to RB Jamaal Charles (knee). RBs Dexter McCluster, Thomas Jones and Jackie Battle and FB Le'Ron McClain could receive carries the rest of the season.

Footballguys view: We think the Chiefs will use Jones and McClain when the game is close. However, if they fall behind and have to go into 'catch up' mode on offense they will turn to McCluster. He could be a sneaky good addition in PPR leagues as we expect KC to play from behind a lot.

Chiefs | Thomas Jones likely will see increased role    Wed Sep 21, 12:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones likely will receive an increased role in the offense now that RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is out for the season because he has not missed a game since 2005 and does not have any fumbling issues.

Footballguys view: Jones is not the same player he used to be, and he doesn't even look like the back he did last year. He'll be the team's primary ballcarrier so long as the game is close. However, if the team gets behind they'll look to Dexter McCluster as a change of pace runner.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jonathan Baldwin (wrist) injured his wrist during a locker room altercation with RB Thomas Jones. Baldwin is expected to miss the rest of the preseason.

Footballguys view: Steve Breaston becomes a more interesting late-round WR pick and Jerheme Urban a deep, deep sleeper in PPR leagues with this news.

Chiefs | Thomas Jones unhappy with conditioning of some players    Mon Jul 11, 02:06 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones was unhappy with the conditioning of some of the players during player-organized workouts and said some players were fat and out of shape.

Footballguys view: Jones has been one of the most physically fit players in the entire NFL for years and is known as a workout warrior. It's not surprising he's upset at the sight of unfit teammates.

Chiefs | May give fewer carries to RB Jones?    Fri Jun 3, 03:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley indicated the team may look for RB Thomas Jones to drop some weight because he may receive less carries and he would be better off being a little lighter.

Footballguys view: Jones reduction in workload is for the team to feature more of Jamaal Charles. There is even a chance to see more of WR Dexter McCluster in the backfield as a RB. Jones should still be the teams primary back on short-yardage situations.

Chiefs | Thomas Jones played less than half of snaps    Fri May 13, 01:44 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones was involved in only 41 percent of the team's offensive snaps this season.

Footballguys view: Jones still has some gas left in the tank, and we expect his role with the Chiefs to be fairly similar this season. He was added last year to keep Jamaal Charles healthy and give the team good veteran depth.

Chiefs | Thomas Jones to return for another year    Thu Mar 24, 02:56 AM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said Wednesday, March 23, that RB Thomas Jones will return for a 12th NFL season, reports Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star. Jones said after the playoffs that he would need time before deciding if he'd return.

Footballguys view: Jones acts as the Chiefs grinder at the running back position. We expect his role to be the same as it was last year, playing a complementary role behind starter Jamaal Charles.

Chiefs | Todd Haley not concerned about balancing running backs    Thu Sep 23, 10:48 AM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said he is not concerned with how the tandem of RB Thomas Jones and RB Jamaal Charles is being used, according to Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star. Jones has been used as the featured back instead of Charles thus far. 'It is in no way a problem for us,' Haley said. 'So far, through two games in the first quarter of the season, I would grade us as being successful.' The Chiefs rank fifth in the league in rushing yardage. However, they have been more efficient when giving the ball to Charles, who is averaging 6.4 yards per carry and has the team's only rushing touchdown. Jones has averaged 3.7 yards per carry. Charles also delivered the Chiefs' only pass reception of longer than 20 yards. Jones, though, has far more carries than Charles. Jones has 33, Charles has 22.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners (especially Jamaal Charles owners) are growing frustrated by Todd Haley and his coaching decisions. The Chiefs are undefeated so we're not expecting Haley to change this split anytime soon. Jamaal Charles is incredibly talented and a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. His big games will come, but fantasy owners are going to have to have patience with Charles.

Chiefs | No starting RB has been named for Week 1    Sat Sep 11, 02:30 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have not named a starting running back for Week 1 and head coach Todd Haley said he will be use RBs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones based on feeling, reports The Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: The smart money is on Charles getting more touches and being more productive with those touches, but we wouldn't put anything past Todd Haley.

Chiefs | Experience is why Thomas Jones is starting    Thu Aug 26, 01:49 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones is listed as the starter over RB Jamaal Charles because Jones has proven himself over a full season, according to head coach Todd Haley, reports The Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher. 'What he did last year ... it was an eight-game window or an eight-game sample that we saw,' Haley said of Charles. 'What we're pushing Jamaal to do is show that he can do that throughout a 16-game and hopefully-plus schedule. That's something that Thomas has proven through time.' Charles has rushed nine times for 63 yards in two preseason games while Jones has 10 rushes for just 31 yards.

Footballguys view: Jamaal Charles will still have plenty of fantasy value in 2010, even if he's the backup all year. Thomas Jones is the grinder for this Chiefs team, but when the team moves into 'catch up' mode they will turn to Charles. He's a dangerous receiver out of the backfield, and a threat to score nearly every time he touches the ball. Jones was brought in to help keep Charles fresh in a RBBC, and the team will use Jones as their primary inside runner.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles still second on depth chart    Tue Aug 24, 12:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is second on the team's depth chart behind RB Thomas Jones, according to Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star.

Footballguys view: Both Charles and Jones will have fantasy value this year, and Charles has the higher upside in our opinion. Even though he's second on the depth chart he's still a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Charles is also better as a receiver out of the backfield, and could get more snaps as the Chiefs should be playing from behind a lot this year.

Chiefs | Thomas Jones listed as No. 1 running back    Thu Aug 12, 03:07 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones was listed as the team's No. 1 running back on their initial depth chart, reports Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star. He has been lining up that way in practices, too, ahead of RB Jamaal Charles. Head coach Todd Haley said he believes that will continue for the foreseeable future, too, but added that he shouldn't be held to the depth chart at this time. He has indicated both backs will see enough work to keep them happy.

Footballguys view: Jones could be listed as the top back for several reasons. Haley could be tipping his hat to the veteran, or he could be using this early ranking to light a fire under Jamaal Charles. Either way we feel Charles will have the most fantasy value this year out of the two.

Chiefs | Will use RB that gives team best chance to win    Wed Aug 11, 05:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said that RB Thomas Jones probably will continue to work with the starters before RB Jamaal Charles will during practice but that the team will use whoever they believe gives them the best chance to win, reports Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star. 'They both want to be the starter,' Haley said. 'There's no doubt about that. Somebody's got to start. That's just the way it is. We'll do our due diligence. We'll play the guy that gives us the best chance to win on that particular day, that particular series, that particular half, whatever it is. I will not be shy in making sure the guy that I think is running the best at a particular time is in there.'

Footballguys view: We feel that Jamaal Charles has the most fantasy value out of this duo. He's a more explosive player and a threat to score every time he touches the football. Thomas Jones is a banger, who can grind out tough yards between the tackles. However, when the game gets out of hand the Chiefs could move to a more pass happy mode where Charles would be the featured back.

Chiefs | Using the Wildcat    Sat Jul 31, 04:50 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs spent a lot of time using the Wildcat formation during practice Saturday, July 31, reports Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star. RBs Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles and WR Dexter McCluster all took at least one direct snap.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have options now that they've added Jones and drafted McCluster. We could see formations where both Charles and Jones are in the backfield at the same time with McCluster lined up in the slot. Don't be surprised if the Chiefs use McCluster as a Wildcat QB as well. McCluster is a versatile weapon, and Charlie Weis should be very creative in finding ways to get him the football.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles/Thomas Jones battle will be interesting    Sun Jul 25, 12:52 PM

The battle between Kansas City Chiefs RBs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones during training camp will be one of the more intriguing ones for the Chiefs, writes Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star. Both had over 1,000 yards rushing last year, so it will be interesting to see how much playing time each player receives. Both will have a role in the offense, but the Chiefs need to be mindful that Jones will turn 32 soon and Charles doesn't have the size to be an every-down back.

Footballguys view: Charles is expected to be the centerpiece of the Chiefs offense, but that doesn't mean Jones won't play a role too. We expect Jones to get carries early on in a contest when the game is close. Jones could also be a grinder for the team when they need to nurse a lead late in a game. If the Chiefs get behind then Charles could be on the field more because of his playmaking capability. Both backs should see plenty of touches, but Charles has the higher fantasy value because he's a threat to score anytime he touches the ball.

Chiefs | RB Charles expected to be centerpiece of the offense    Sun Jul 18, 03:08 PM

Kent Babb, from the Kansas City Star, reports third-year RB Jamaal Charles should be the centerpiece of the Chiefs offense this season.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs know Charles is one of their most dangerous weapons on offense, and they should be creative in finding ways to get him the football. Veteran Thomas Jones was added in the offseason to help share some of the RB duties and prevent Charles from wearing down over the course of the season.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles willing to share carries    Sat May 22, 04:35 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles said he is willing to share carries with RB Thomas Jones this season, according to The Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher. 'I knew we had to get another playmaker and somebody to help me out,' Charles said. 'He'll get some carries, I'll get some carries. I don't have any problem with that. It's turning into a two-back league, anyway.'

Footballguys view: Thomas Jones comes over from the Jets to give Kansas City a power option when they run the football. Jamaal Charles showed his playmaking ability last year when he rushed for over 1,000-yards on less than 200 carries. However, the Chiefs are worried about him wearing down and that's why they brought Jones in. Charles may get a few more touches because he's a good receiving option out of the backfield, and the Chiefs could be playing catchup football early and often.

Chiefs | T. Jones not worried about carries    Tue Apr 13, 06:58 PM

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones said his goal is to help the team win and does not care how many carries he will receive. 'I'm here to help the team win. If I get five carries, I get five carries. If I get 25 carries, then I get 25 carries. All I can do at this point is prepare for the season like I have always done. That is how I play and that is how I have looked at my career. I will continue to look at my career like that,' Jones said.

Footballguys view: Jamaal Charles proved last year that he could be very effective and is an explosive runner in addition to being a good receiving option out of the backfield. If (when) the Chiefs get behind early they will be forced to switch into "catch up" mode which may mean more playing time for Charles over Jones. However, Jones is a strong veteran that can wear down a defense, so we could see the carries split about 50/50. We may even see sets where Charles and Jones are on the field at the same time.

Chiefs | Pioli does not know what roles Charles, Jones will have    Tue Mar 23, 03:47 PM

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said he does not know how much playing time RBs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones will play next season. 'I can't tell you whether Jamaal will play more or Thomas Jones will play more,' Pioli said. 'The roles will figure themselves out. The best players will play. The players will sort that out themselves. We're trying to do this at every position.'

Footballguys view: Charles is expected to receive a majority of the work in the backfield, but the split could be closer to 50/50 then some fantasy owners want. Jones can be the workhorse and pick up the tough yards between the tackles, while Charles will the lightning quick big play back. If the Chiefs get behind early then Charles could get more playing time because he's a better receiving option out of the backfield.

Chiefs | Potential committee approach at running back     Tue Mar 9, 05:40 PM

Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star, speculated on Twitter that he could see a 65/35 split of touches between Kansas City Chiefs RBs Jamaal Charles and newly signed Thomas Jones. Babb said what many didn't see last year was how beaten up Charles was by the end of the season, noting Charles was 'on fumes' by the end of the year.

Footballguys view: This is a great move by the Chiefs, as Jones will be a perfect fit with Jamaal Charles. Jones will help keep Charles fresh, and bring veteran leadership to a team that needs more of it.

Chiefs | T. Jones to visit Monday    Sat Mar 6, 07:31 PM

Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports the Kansas City Chiefs will meet with unrestricted free-agent RB Thomas Jones (Jets) Monday, March 8.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have a serious lack of quality depth in their RB corps, and Jones would be a great addition to the team. Jamaal Charles rushed for over 1,000 yards last year on less than 200 carries, but may tend to wear down if asked to carry the load over an entire season. Jones would bring toughness and attitude to a team that needs more of both.

Bill Williamson, of ESPN.com, reports the San Diego Chargers could show interest in New York Jets RB Thomas Jones once he is released by the Jets Friday, March 5.

Footballguys view: Jones has more left in the tank then other veteran backs on the market like Brian Westbrook. If they do add Jones, then a back in the first-round would be unlikely.

Jets | Players unhappy with Jones release    Tue Mar 2, 10:07 AM

Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports the release of New York Jets RB Thomas Jones is a decision that stung several veterans on the team. 'I can tell you, it's not going to be a popular move in the locker room,' said one player, speaking on the condition of anonymity. 'We loved T.J. The man loved the game and put it all on the line only to get dumped after his best season. I think you should reward players for performance. You dump him but give LB Vernon Gholston another shot? Doesn't make sense.' OG Alan Faneca said it would be difficult to replace Jones' intangibles and production. 'It just goes to show the business side of the game, when such a productive guy like T.J. is released,' Faneca said in an e-mail. 'To be so close last year, and then for T.J. not to be there with us going after the ring again is what hurts.'
