Lions | Kerryon Johnson comfortable with brace    Sun Aug 23, 01:00 AM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson said he has become comfortable playing with a brace on his right knee. 'So that's just the new me,' Johnson said. 'I'm the knee-brace guy, everybody jokes about it. It feels great. I like having the knee brace on. It helps me out a lot.'

Footballguys view: The brace won't prevent injury, but if it makes Johnson feel better, it still helps, although it's troubling that he would feel like he needs it. D'Andre Swift getting starts at some point due to Johnson missing time remains a compelling reason to target Swift if you believe in him.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson wearing knee brace    Sat Aug 15, 01:50 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) was photographed wearing a brace on his right knee during the team's first practice of training camp Friday, Aug. 14. It is not believed, though, that Johnson has reinjured the knee he had a procedure on during the 2019 season.

Footballguys view: Johnson was supposed to take over in the Lions backfield but that hasn't happened over the last couple of seasons due to injury. Now, Johnson will compete with rookie RB D'Andre Swift for the starting job in training camp.

Lions | D'Andre Swift ready to roll    Fri Jul 10, 12:35 PM

Detroit Lions RB D'Andre Swift says he's eager to compete with returning starter Kerryon Johnson for snaps. 'I've been competing all my life,' Swift said Thursday, July 9 on a conference call. 'Kerryon is a great back, great player. I remember when he was at Auburn, and he was killing us. He's still doing great in the league. I can't even give you my role. Whatever role they have for me, I just gotta make sure I'm in the best shape and know all of the plays so I'm ready to take it on full force. But I'm not going in there looking to do anything, just doing what I've been doing.'

Footballguys view: Swift might have a slower ramp up with no offseason, but the Lions will employ some sort of RBBC to deploy their two second-round pick running backs. ADP indicates that the fantasy community is a lot higher on Swift, but the likelihood of a close to even split means that Johnson is the better pick at the steep discount. Swift's best chance of hitting this year is Johnson missing significant time with an injury for the third straight year.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson is cool with D'Andre Swift selection    Thu Jun 11, 12:29 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson is pleased with the selection of RB D'Andre Swift in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. 'Look, I knew we were going to draft a running back eventually. I think we got, in my opinion, definitely one of the top two (in the draft). I love having a running back. I love winning games and I think he can help us do that, so I wasn't tripping at all,' Johnson said during a Wednesday, June 10, Zoom call with reporters. 'But just having multiple running backs that are capable of running the ball at an efficient level, whether the style is different or the style is the same, it just takes the stress off one another,' Johnson added. 'This is going to be his (Swift's) first (season) in the league. This is going to be my third. We're all going to have the help of Bo (Scarbrough) and Ty (Johnson) and all those other guys. All our running backs before Huntley and Swift came all started in an NFL game. All of us started multiple (games), so that's something not a lot of teams can say. We got a lot of guys who know how to play, we got a lot of guys who have played and I think we'll all get along just fine.'

Footballguys view: Johnson may be cool with it now but how will he feel if/when the rookie takes the starting job? Swift has a three-down skill set and was arguably the best running back in the 2020 NFL draft. He can be a solid starter at least if not a star at the pro level. Johnson has skill but injuries and inconsistencies have prevented him from producing at the expected level. We'll see this battle shake out in training camp.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson a workhorse?    Fri Apr 3, 11:31 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson averaged 20.3 touches and 87.5 yards from scrimmage over the first four games in 2019.

Footballguys view: He'd be a workhorse if he could maintain that level of workload over a full 16-game season. In two seasons with the Lions, Johnson has only played in 18 games. Last year, Johnson only appeared in eight games and ran for a paltry 3.6 yards per carry. It's a make-or-break season for Johnson in 2020.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson likely to receive normal workload    Sun Dec 22, 09:16 AM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson is expected to get his normal workload in Week 16's contest against the Denver Broncos, even if he doesn't necessarily start the game, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a what the heck flex today, but he is still in a bad offense on the road, so only his fresh legs give him some hope of mattering in Week 16.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson activated    Sat Dec 21, 04:15 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) was activated off of the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 21, according to a source. He's eligible to play Sunday, Dec. 22, against the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: This move was expected and now is official. Johnson has been practicing fully for two weeks and he should be in line for the starting job against the Broncos. The Broncos are fairly stout against the run, so Fantasy GMs should just consider Johnson a RB3 or flex play in Week 16.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson hoping to play Sunday    Thu Dec 19, 05:00 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) 'hopes to' play Sunday, Dec. 22, against the Denver Broncos, he said Thursday, Dec. 19. He hasn't yet been activated from the Reserve/Injured list.

Footballguys view: Johnson has been practicing in full for two weeks and his fresh legs make him a sleeper this week if he plays vs Denver.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson set to return?    Thu Dec 19, 01:42 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) is practicing with the team Thursday, Dec. 19, and looks as though he'll rejoin the lineup Sunday, Dec. 22, against the Denver Broncos, according to Chris Burke of The Athletic. Burke adds he'd plan on Johnson starting the game.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are preparing as if Johnson will return to the field this week. The Lions don't have a much of a commitment to running the ball, and the Broncos defense is tough against the run. Johnson could start, but we'd only consider him a deep 'what the heck' flex in Week 16.

Lions | Bo Scarbrough fine with committee    Fri Dec 13, 09:16 PM

Detroit Lions RB Bo Scarbrough (ribs) believes he and RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) can be a 'dominant' tandem whenever Johnson is activated from the Reserve/Injured list. 'Kerryon has his style of running, and I have my style of running, and when you get two guys with different styles, but somewhat similar, I think it's harder for the defense because you don't actually switch out linebackers and safeties,' Scarbrough said.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson practicing    Wed Dec 4, 12:32 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) will practice Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Footballguys view: Johnson has been on Injured Reserve with this knee injury and by returning to practice it opens up a three-week window for the Lions to decide whether or not to activate him. The earliest he could return is Week 16, so the Lions roll on with Bo Scarbrough as their lead back for now.

Footballguys view: Lions head coach Matt Patricia believes that Johnson will be able to return towards the end of the regular season. Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) suffered a knee injury during the Week 7 game and is considered questionable to return.

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson rushed 13 times for 34 yards and a touchdown in the Week 6 game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday, Oct. 14.

Footballguys view: Johnson never got in a groove despite the Lions leading for most of the game. He's still the clear lead back but faces a strong Vikings front next week.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson hits century mark    Sun Sep 29, 08:47 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson rushed 26 times for 125 yards in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs while adding two grabs for 32 yards on three targets.

Footballguys view: CJ Anderson's release has ushered in the workhorse era for Johnson. He was strong from start to finish, but his fumble at the goal line that was returned for a score was probably the difference in the game. He's a strong RB2 at worst going forward.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson has solid game    Sun Sep 15, 04:52 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson rushed for 41 yards on 12 carries against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2. He also caught two passes for 47 yards and one touchdown during the game.

Footballguys view: Johnson's day was saved by a 36-yard catch and run touchdown, but it was a still a day that saw him cede more work to other backs than most lead backs and the Lions struggled to establish the run against a Chargers team that Marlon Mack ran all over last week. He'll be an acceptable RB2 against the Eagles next week.

Lions | No set limits for Kerryon Johnson    Wed Jul 24, 10:36 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson has the potential to be the workhorse in 2019, but after missing six games due to a knee injury in 2018, and his head coach's belief in a by-committee approach, he might have his workload managed early on. 'Nobody's setting a number, a ceiling, a floor or anything of who's going to get what touches and all that,' running backs coach Kyle Caskey said Wednesday, July 24. 'It's all about getting the running game going and then setting up all the other stuff for us. But whoever the best running back is that comes out of this thing will be getting the touches, whoever's hot will be getting the touches.'

Footballguys view: Johnson is the kind of runner that gets stronger as the game goes on, and he has the skillset to never leave the field. If Theo Riddick doesn't make the team, Johnson has top 6-8 running back upside, and maybe even if Riddick does.

Lions | Big year for Kerryon Johnson?    Sat Jun 22, 10:29 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson is 'easily' going to top 1,000 rushing yards this season if he stays healthy, in the opinion of Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Footballguys view: Johnson was getting on track before he got hurt and this offense should feed him all he can handle. Theo Riddick could get released before the season and boost Johnson's value even higher. He's looking like a good third-round target.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson a threat for 60 catches?    Thu Jun 13, 05:47 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson finished with 32 catches in 10 games as a rookie in 2018, and the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett could see him doubling that production in 2019 if the team decides they don't need to take Johnson off the field on third down.

Footballguys view: Johnson caught 32 passes as a rookie in 2018...in just 10 games. Catching 45 or more passes this season is not an outlandish projection for the second-year back. Johnson has a current ADP of RB19 (3.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson fully healthy    Fri May 3, 09:12 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) said he is fully recovered from last year's knee and injury and back to his old self, and his goal in 2019 is to play in every game.

Footballguys view: Good news for the second-year pro here. Johnson is the top back for the Lions, but he could be pushed for playing time by veteran C.J. Anderson. As a rookie in 2018, Johnson played in 10 games averaging a healthy 5.4 yards per carry. Fantasy GMs should look at him as a potential RB2 if he is the bellcow the Lions hope he could be. Johnson has a current ADP of RB28 (6.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson ran into rookie wall    Thu May 2, 12:34 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson said he hit the proverbial rookie wall early in the 2018 season. 'Rookie wall hit me in like, fall, bro,' Johnson said Thursday, May 2.

Footballguys view: The Lions are hoping to get a full season out of Johnson this year. He's talented and doesn't need to come off the field on third downs. The Lions do have quality veteran depth behind him as they added C.J. Anderson this offseason. If Johnson gets banged up or fails to impress, Anderson is proven and can take over in that backfield.

Lions | Detroit will watch Kerryon Johnson's load    Thu Mar 28, 02:58 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson won't be run into the ground this year coming off a knee injury late last season. 'We could win a couple [games] now, but if we wear this guy out and he doesn't help us in the long run then what's the trade off?' head coach Matt Patricia said.

Footballguys view: Johnson looked good during his rookie season in 2018...for 10 games at least. A knee injury knocked him out for the rest of the regular season but he expects to be available for OTAs and minicamp. Johnson has talent as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. He is the lead back for the Lions but it sounds like they'll monitor his snap count.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson a complete back?    Thu Feb 21, 11:24 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson's ability to catch passes out of the backfield will be a 'bonus' for the offense, according to offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. 'We're going to run the football, and we're going to run it really well,' Bevell said.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a complete back, and he's the best the Lions have had in several years. If healthy, Johnson can be a centerpiece of the Detroit offense and post RB2-ish numbers for Fantasy GMs.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson done for season    Wed Dec 19, 10:04 AM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Dec. 19. He should make a full recovery in the offseason.

Footballguys view: Johnson began the year in a rotational role with the Lions. When they eventually figured out he should be a featured back (what a concept!), Johnson came through with a few strong performances (two, 100-yard rushing games). The 2018 second-round pick finishes his rookie season with 118 carries for 641 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. He also added 32 catches for 213 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. Johnson will be the lead back for the Lions in 2019. For the rest of this season, the Lions will go with LeGarrette Blount and Zach Zenner in a competition for carries. Theo Riddick continues as their primary receiving threat out of the backfield.

DE Ziggy Ansah (neck) and WR Kenny Golladay (quad) returned to a full practice Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) remained out of practice Friday, Dec. 7, as he recovers from a knee injury and is expected to be ruled out of Week 14 when the team issues its game designations later Friday.
