Raiders | O.J. Howard released    Tue Aug 1, 12:36 PM

Las Vegas Raiders TE O.J. Howard was released Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Footballguys view: The former first-round pick (Buccaneers, 2017) has not looked the same since his Achilles' tear in 2020. Since that time, he's been with three teams, caught 24 passes, and has only three receiving touchdowns. Some team who wants veteran depth at the position could give Howard a look. The Raiders move forward with rookie TE Michael Mayer and veteran TE Austin Hooper at the position.

Texans | Houston signing O.J. Howard    Thu Sep 1, 06:06 PM

Free-agent TE O.J. Howard (Bills) agreed to terms with the Houston Texans Thursday, Sept. 1, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Howard probably isn't a threat to Brevin Jordan or Pharaoh Brown's snaps for now. The Bills were so unimpressed with Howard that they ate almost 3.2 million in guaranteed money to open up his spot for someone else. Howard was a 2017 first round pick by the Bucs, but hasn't been the same since tearing an achilles in 2020.

Texans | O.J. Howard meeting with Houston    Thu Sep 1, 04:00 PM

Free-agent TE O.J. Howard (Bills) is visiting with the Houston Texans on Thursday, Sept. 1.

Footballguys view: Howard is just not the same player he used to be. He struggled to impress in Bills' camp, and Howard could not get much separation when running routes. A few teams have shown interest in the veteran now that he's on the open market.

Bills | O.J. Howard let go    Tue Aug 30, 09:30 AM

Buffalo Bills TE O.J. Howard was released Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Footballguys view: Those listening to the drumbeats from Bills camp should not be surprised by this news. The former first-round pick just never caught on with the Bills, and he did not impress in camp or the preseason. Howard was so unimpressive that the Bills are going to eat $3.1 million in guaranteed money just to get rid of him. We'll see if some team takes a chance on the veteran as a no.2 tight end.

Bills | TE Howard on the Roster Bubble?    Thu Aug 25, 01:54 PM

Joe Buscaglia, from The Athletic, reports Buffalo Bills TE O.J. Howard "has allowed the competition to catch up to him with a disappointing camp." That firmly puts Howard on the roster bubble before the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: This means Dawson Knox could be in for an every-down role with the Bills. Earlier this offseason, Buffalo signed Howard to a one-year, $3.5 million contract. There's $2 million of dead money in the deal, but Howard has been so unimpressive as a receiving threat that guys like Tommy Sweeney and Quintin Morris are getting snaps ahead of him in the preseason. Stay tuned.

Bills | Quintin Morris impressing    Wed Aug 24, 10:17 AM

Buffalo Bills TE Quintin Morris was one of Buffalo's most improved players this offseason, according to a source. Morris received the start in TE Dawson Knox's absence, not TE O.J. Howard, in the preseason Week 2 matchup. The Bills would save $2.25 million if they traded or released Howard.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Bowling Green in 2021, Morris signed a reserve/futures contract with the Bills in January of 2022. He spent most of his rookie season on the team's practice squad developing his skill set. Morris is a converted wide receiver who is a threat after the catch. He also brings basketball skills to the football field and knows how to use his frame to box out defenders. Watch him in deep dynasty formats.

Bills | TE Howard Has Not Looked Dynamic    Thu Jun 16, 04:00 PM

Joe Buscaglia, from The Athletic, reports Buffalo Bills TE O.J. Howard has not looked like a dynamic pass-catching weapon during team minicamp.

Footballguys view: Dawson Knox is the starting tight end for the Bills, and he's a playmaking weapon who can attack the middle of the field. Howard is a big-bodied veteran who could get some work as a reserve tight end when the team is near pay dirt in the red zone. The former first-round pick (2017) has never done much as a receiver during his pro career in five seasons with the Buccaneers. Now in Buffalo, he'll be a reserve at best.

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard coming off disappointing year    Mon Feb 28, 09:29 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent TE O.J. Howard posted only 14 receptions for 135 yards and one touchdown this past season, according to ESPN.com's Jenna Laine.

Footballguys view: Howard should have more opportunity in 2022. A former first-round pick, Howard has the potential to be a weapon in the NFL if he's not splitting time. He was not the primary tight end with the Buccaneers, especially over the last two years with Rob Gronkowski eating up snaps and targets.

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard practices    Fri Jul 30, 10:13 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard (Achilles') practiced for the first time Friday, July 30, since tearing his Achilles' in October.

Footballguys view: Howard wasn't placed on the PUP to open camp, so this return was expected early in camp. He might not have as large a role as he had to open last season, when he was clearly ahead of Rob Gronkowski in the target pecking order, but Howard can still be relevant in fantasy leagues because of the low bar at tight end.

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard almost all the way back    Sat May 15, 11:47 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard (Achilles) is expected to attend mandatory minicamp in early June, according to comments from head coach Bruce Arians.'Yeah, he's really close now. He looks fantastic working out every day,' Arians said.

Footballguys view: Howard gives the Buccaneers yet another weapon in the passing game. In 2020, Howard was on a career best pace over the first four games of the year. He's been on the road to recovery since last fall, and it sounds like he's progressing well. Expect the team to ease him back into action. If he gets back to where he was physically, the role is there for him to post near TE1 numbers in this offense.

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard update    Wed Mar 31, 12:10 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard (Achilles') will be ready by the start of the offseason program, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Good news for Howard here. Ready for the offseason program doesn't mean "full steam ahead" for the veteran tight end. Instead, the team should ease him back into action with a plan for him to be near full participation by training camp.

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard progressing nicely    Tue Mar 30, 01:22 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard (Achilles) is 'real close' to fully recovering from the torn Achilles that ended his season in Week 4, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: We should see Howard limited in the offseason as the team eases him back into action. Howard has yet to run on grass, but he has also not experienced any setbacks. They should ramp him up as training camp gets here.

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard put on IR    Tue Oct 6, 05:45 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard (Achilles) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Footballguys view: Now the move is official. It's bad news for the young tight end who will be entering a contract year in 2021. We've seen him flash during his pro career but never quite put it all together. We'll see if Howard can finally do that next year.   Buccaneers | O.J. Howard may miss rest of season    Sun Oct 4, 07:02 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard (Achilles) suffered an Achilles tendon injury during the Week 4 game, and head coach Bruce Arians said the team is concerned that Howard may miss the rest of the season.

Footballguys view: Rob Gronkowski and Cameron Brate would potentially get more targets if Howard is out long term, but this offense doesn't look like it will support a fantasy relevant tight end.

Buccaneers | Bucs to use two TEs in base offense    Thu Jun 4, 08:48 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TEs Rob Gronkowski, O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate will all spend plenty of time on the field in 2020, according to head coach Bruce Arians. 'That's our base offense,' Arians said when asked about the Buccaneers using 12 personnel with one running back and two tight ends, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: This makes a lot of sense, as the Bucs have maybe the best tight end room in the league. 2020 Bucs game scripts should be lower scoring than the wild and wooly ride with Jameis Winston last year. That could lower passing numbers for this offense, but create more wins. This change would also push Chris Godwin to outside receiver more often, but he was winning inside and outside with equal aplomb.

Buccaneers | Tom Brady throws with teammates at prep school    Tue May 19, 12:03 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady conducted an on-field throwing session Tuesday, May 19, with several teammates at a local-area prep school. The session lasted about two hours, and Brady was seen walking through routes, including demonstrations of precise foot placement for making breaks. Brady was joined by WR Mike Evans, TE O.J. Howard, TE Cameron Brate, QB Blaine Gabbert, C Ryan Jensen, QB Ryan W. Griffin, WR Scott Miller and RB Dare Ogunbowale.

Footballguys view: It's going to be different to see Brady playing for a new team in 2020. The weapons are there for him to be quite productive this season. Fantasy GMs are taking him off the board at QB11 (8.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked up the fifth-year option on TE O.J. Howard, which should pay him $6 million in 2021.

Footballguys view: The option is guaranteed only for injury. There was buzz about the team trading Howard away but that never came to fruition. Instead, they keep him and pick up his option for 2021. We'll see Howard mixed in with Rob Gronkowski and Cameron Brate in the Bucs TEBC.
