San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) was designated for return from the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Footballguys view: Kyle Shanahan seemed to shut down any idea that Garoppolo would return this year. Nick Mullens is done for the season, so that means C.J. Beathard will get the start in Week 16.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo not expected in Week 15    Tue Dec 15, 01:46 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is not expected to return for the Week 15 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday, Dec. 14 that it is too risky to put Garoppolo out on the field until he is medically cleared. Garoppolo will be re-evaluated next week. Nick Mullens has been starting but the team might make the switch to C.J. Beathard. Stay tuned.

49ers | George Kittle, Jimmy Garoppolo could return?    Tue Dec 1, 02:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (foot) and QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) have both been sidelined since Week 8, but head coach Kyle Shanahan is 'holding out hope for ... the last couple weeks.''I think they're in a similar boat, but that I mean that's not guaranteed. ... They're just starting to get into where they get on the field and not with us but on their own to do some stuff,' Shanahan said of their rehabs Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Footballguys view: The chances of both returning are slim to be sure. Kittle wants to return and Fantasy GMs headed for the fantasy playoffs would love that. He is likely to miss at least the next couple of games at least with maybe a return in Week 16. Don't hold out too much hope and stay tuned.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo ditches boot    Tue Nov 17, 05:06 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is no longer wearing a walking boot, and head coach Kyle Shanahan is hopeful he will be back in the lineup at some point in December, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Shanahan has previously stated that Garoppolo will return as the starter once he's healthy. The offense has some sputters with Nick Mullens at quarterback, but they'll have to stick with him for at least a couple of more games. Once the calendar turns to December, we should see more information on when specifically Garoppolo will return.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo pulled at halftime    Sun Oct 11, 05:51 PM

Footballguys view: Garoppolo was falling apart at the end of the half. The team might believe he showed he wasn't ready physically or that leaving him in would do damage mentally, but either way they don't think Garoppolo should be out there. A big division matchup is up next vs. the Rams and Garoppolo should be out there, but one wonders about how long his leash is now.

San Francisco 49ers CB Dontae Johnson (groin) and CB Emmanuel Moseley (concussion) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins. WR Deebo Samuel (illness) not practice for a second straight day Friday, Oct. 9, and is listed as questionable. QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), LB Dre Greenlaw (quad), WR Dante Pettis (knee), WR Trent Taylor (ankle) and DB Jimmie Ward (wrist) practiced in full Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.

Footballguys view: We'll watch Samuel's status leading up to Sunday afternoon. If he can't go, Brandon Aiyuk should see more touches, although he'll be facing the best pair of outside corners in the league.

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is 'looking like' he will be able to play in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins, according to comments from head coach Kyle Shanahan, who noted he wants to see how his quarterback's ankle is holding up after two days of limited practice earlier this week before making a final determination.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo has a good matchup against the Dolphins and should be squarely in 2QB/Superflex starting consideration. His return would be good news for the whole offense.

San Francisco 49ers DL Dee Ford (back), QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), LB Dre Greenlaw (quad), CB Emmanuel Moseley (concussion), RB Raheem Mostert (knee) and TE Jordan Reed (knee) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles. CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring) did not practice Friday, Oct. 2, and has also been ruled out. CB K'Waun Williams (hip) was limited in practice for a second straight day Friday and is listed as questionable. TE George Kittle (knee) and RB Jerick McKinnon (ribs) practiced in full all week and have been removed from the injury report.

Footballguys view: Deebo Samuel will return this week. That hurts Brandon Aiyuk's outlook but helps Nick Mullens. Samuel is risky in his first game back from foot surgery, but should be a WR3/Flex once he's established and can help teams that need to replace a Steelers or Titans receiver.

Footballguys view: Kittle, Garoppolo, and Mostert could all return next week against the Eagles.   49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo ruled out    Fri Sep 25, 07:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 25, and has been ruled out for Week 3.

Footballguys view: Nick Mullens will get the start for the 49ers this week. He played in eight games back in 2018 and is solid yet unspectacular as a starter. Mullens should have an easier matchup against a bad Giants secondary...but the 49ers are likely to run the ball as much as possible and limit what their passing game does. In other words, Mullens is not much of a fantasy option in Week 3.

  49ers | San Francisco's injury report for Week 3    Fri Sep 25, 02:34 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Tevin Coleman (knee), DL Dee Ford (back), QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), LB Dre Greenlaw (quad) and RB Raheem Mostert (knee) did not practice Friday, Sept. 25, and have been ruled out for Week 3 against the New York Giants. TE George Kittle (knee) was limited in practice all week and has also been ruled out. CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring) was limited in practice Friday and is listed as questionable. CB Jason Verrett (hamstring) practiced in full all week and has been removed from the injury report.

Footballguys view: Ford is needed now more than ever with Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas out for the year but there is no timetable for his return. Greenlaw is an up and coming player at linebacker to deal the defense another blow. At least they are getting back the oft-injured Jason Verrett to help replace Richard Sherman.

49ers | Nick Mullens likely to start    Wed Sep 23, 12:58 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Nick Mullens is likely to start in place of QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) in Week 3.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Mullens is a quarterback the team has believed in for some time. He's a good game manager who can run the system as designed. The 49ers have been ravaged by injuries on both sides of the ball, so Mullens isn't a great fantasy option ...even in start-2QB leagues.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo has high ankle sprain    Sun Sep 20, 06:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) suffered a high ankle sprain during the Week 2 game.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo is almost certainly out vs. the Giants next week. Look for Nick Mullens, who was not bad as an undrafted rookie two years ago, to start. He's an auto pickup in 2QB/Superflex leagues.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo ruled out    Sun Sep 20, 02:41 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) suffered an ankle injury during the Week 2 game and will not return.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo feeling more comfortable    Sun Aug 30, 07:12 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo has been more decisive in training camp this summer and shown a quickness mentally and physically that wasn't always there previously, according to Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area.'When I say decisive, I mean just decisive when that ball is in his hands and out on his back foot. When he hits his back foot in his drop it's a thing of beauty and you're seeing more and more of it throughout camp,' 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo is going to have to deal with the WR injuries that have run rampant through the 49ers WR corps. The 49ers are a run-first/run-heavy team and that means Garoppolo is not much of a thrilling fantasy option at quarterback in 2020.

49ers | No brace for Jimmy Garoppolo     Tue Aug 11, 09:19 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is no longer wearing a knee brace in practice this year.

Footballguys view: Good news for the veteran quarterback here. Garoppolo is once again the field general for an offense that is going to run the ball often and set up play-action passing. The 49ers WR corps has some injuries that could have an impact early on in the season, mainly missing second-year pro WR Deebo Samuel. Garoppolo is not much more than a low-end QB2 for Fantasy GMs in 2020.

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo provided an update on his knee Tuesday, Aug. 4, saying the difference has been night-and-day from last season and 'it's able to do whatever it needs to do.'

Footballguys view: Garoppolo led the team to the Super Bowl last year and was solid along the way. We'll see if the 49ers can make another championship run in 2020. Having a healthy Garoppolo will certainly help...now if the 49ers can figure out that WR corps.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo got his fair share of help    Sun Jul 19, 09:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo threw for a career-high 3,978 yards in 2019. Of that total, a league-high 54.2 percent came after the catch, per Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Deebo Samuel and George Kittle are both handfuls to bring down after the catch and the 49ers offense sets them with excellent opportunities. First-round pick Brandon Aiyuk also excels in this area and it could help him get off to a strong start while Samuel is recovering from foot surgery that could threaten his status in Week 1 and beyond. While this stat shows that Garoppolo isn't featured as a vertical passer, accuracy is important for creating run after catch yards by helping the receiver not have to adjust or break stride to make a reception.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo lacking air yards    Sat Jul 11, 12:22 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo owned the second-lowest air yards percentage (47.0) over the last two seasons (2018-19), according to Pro Football Focus data.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo doesn't have a true deep threat with Marquise Goodwin shipped off to Philadelphia, and the 49ers offense doesn't rely on a vertical air attack to stress opposing defenses. Garoppolo is only viable in 2QB/Superflex leagues or as a matchup spot starter.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo faced heavy pressure    Tue Jun 23, 06:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo was blitzed on a league-high 39.5 percent of his dropbacks in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo runs a West Coast offense with zone-blocking concepts. Teams are going to blitz in order to disrupt the timing and deception that comes with a play-action passing game. Expect more of the same in 2020.
