49ers | Trey Lance has legitimate shot to start    Tue Jun 15, 01:26 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance will be given 'every opportunity' to rise up the team's depth chart in training camp and perhaps challenge Jimmy Garoppolo for the starting job, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Footballguys view: Those who think Lance needs time to develop aren't inaccurate with that sentiment, but the rookie may not need to sit on the bench that long. His playmaking ability as a rusher can help him make a play while he continues to grow as a passer. We'll see how this battle shakes out in training camp but one thing is clear; Lance is the future for the 49ers and that future may be here sooner than some think.

Patriots | New England unlikely to add Jimmy Garoppolo    Thu Apr 29, 07:14 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is not expected to be acquired by the New England Patriots during the 2021 NFL Draft or in the near future in part because the Patriots do not have the salary cap space to add Garoppolo's contract.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo Thur. trade unlikely    Thu Apr 29, 12:29 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to the subject of multiple trade inquiries Thursday, April 29, but as of Thursday morning, the chances of Garoppolo being traded were 'remote,' according to a source.

Footballguys view: The entire league knows that if they need a veteran quarterback that Garoppolo is available. The action should be hot and heavy in terms of trades on Thursday but we'll see if the 49ers have to wait to get rid of Garoppolo. They are clearly taking a quarterback at no.3 overall in the draft.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo to get moved during draft?    Tue Apr 27, 01:40 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo's future with the 49ers is reportedly now seen as 'bleak,' and San Francisco is expected to make a 'major effort' to trade him before or during the 2021 NFL Draft, according to 105.7 The Fan's Jason La Canfora.

Footballguys view: The 49ers moved up to no.3 overall in the draft so they could get their quarterback of the future. Garoppolo is there for now but if the team finds a willing trade partner, then he's gone. Deals get done at deadlines, but the 49ers have time to work the phones over the next couple of days.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo could be available    Mon Apr 26, 12:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo could become 'more available than he has been' and possibly be acquired for less than a first-round pick, in the opinion of NBC's Peter King.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. The 49ers have made the move to the no.3 pick and that's where they will be targeting a guy like Trey Lance (North Dakota State). Garoppolo could be kept as a veteran mentor for Lance, or the team could just throw the rookie into the fray on day one. Either way, Garoppolo's days are numbered in San Francisco.

49ers | SF wants big return for Jimmy Garoppolo    Fri Apr 2, 03:19 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo has received some trade interest this offseason, but the 49ers have indicated that they would want a first-round pick in return for Garoppolo.

Footballguys view: If they want to hold onto Garoppolo, then keep asking for a first-round pick. GM John Lynch has said they believe in Garoppolo for 2021 but need to get better behind him. That's why they made the power move to get up to the no.3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. It's with that pick they'll draft the QB of the future, and we think that could be Trey Lance (North Dakota State) or Justin Fields (Ohio State) but there are rumors that Mac Jones (Alabama) is an option too.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo still part of SF's plans    Mon Mar 29, 03:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is still part of the team's plans even though they acquired the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: Lynch has said this before. Garoppolo is part of their plans, but they need to be ready for the future...and that may happen sooner rather than later. They can win games with Garoppolo but he's hurt too often to trust. That's why they've secured the no.3 overall pick so they can draft their QB of the future. That could be Justin Fields (Ohio State), Trey Lance (North Dakota State) or Mac Jones (Alabama).

Patriots | NE not pursuing Jimmy Garoppolo    Sun Mar 28, 01:59 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is not a trade target for the New England Patriots at this point, according to sources.

Footballguys view: With the 49ers making a blockbuster move to get up to no.3 overall in the 2021 NFL draft (for a quarterback), many felt the team would be moving on from Garoppolo. A team most interested could be the Patriots, but that doesn't seem to be the case. We expect the 49ers to draft a rookie who could sit for a year behind Garoppolo...or until he gets hurt again.

49ers | Still committed to Jimmy Garoppolo?    Fri Mar 26, 01:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo will not be traded and still figures in the team's plans, according to sources, despite the 49ers trading up to acquire the third-overall pick in the 2021 draft Friday, March 26.

Footballguys view: This is possible, but 25 million is a lot for a bridge quarterback that you just showed you don't have confidence in to be your long term answer at quarterback. The Patriots remain the most likely trade destination, but the 49ers could also attempt to keep Garoppolo on a cheaper deal with a lot of his salary converted to incentives.

49ers | Niners to look at backup QBs    Wed Feb 24, 08:23 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said Wednesday, Feb. 24, the team will look to add a backup quarterback this offseason to insure against potential injury to starter Jimmy Garoppolo. 'Being available is a big part of this thing,' Lynch said. 'So we ... probably as a stated goal ... we have to insulate ourselves better. We got to have better options if he's not there.' Josh Rosen and Josh Johnson are the only other QBs under contract for 2021, along with Garoppolo.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo expected to be starter in 2021    Wed Feb 24, 03:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo will be the starting quarterback for the 49ers next season as long as he is healthy, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: So long as he's healthy, Garoppolo will be the 49ers starter...but he struggles to stay healthy. As Lynch says, the team needs to be better and have a better plan if/when Garoppolo is banged up again. That means the team could look to add a quarterback in free agency or the draft. If you take Lynch at his word about Garoppolo, it could indicate the team is 'out' on the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes.

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) was designated for return from the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Footballguys view: Kyle Shanahan seemed to shut down any idea that Garoppolo would return this year. Nick Mullens is done for the season, so that means C.J. Beathard will get the start in Week 16.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo not expected in Week 15    Tue Dec 15, 01:46 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is not expected to return for the Week 15 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday, Dec. 14 that it is too risky to put Garoppolo out on the field until he is medically cleared. Garoppolo will be re-evaluated next week. Nick Mullens has been starting but the team might make the switch to C.J. Beathard. Stay tuned.

49ers | George Kittle, Jimmy Garoppolo could return?    Tue Dec 1, 02:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (foot) and QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) have both been sidelined since Week 8, but head coach Kyle Shanahan is 'holding out hope for ... the last couple weeks.''I think they're in a similar boat, but that I mean that's not guaranteed. ... They're just starting to get into where they get on the field and not with us but on their own to do some stuff,' Shanahan said of their rehabs Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Footballguys view: The chances of both returning are slim to be sure. Kittle wants to return and Fantasy GMs headed for the fantasy playoffs would love that. He is likely to miss at least the next couple of games at least with maybe a return in Week 16. Don't hold out too much hope and stay tuned.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo ditches boot    Tue Nov 17, 05:06 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is no longer wearing a walking boot, and head coach Kyle Shanahan is hopeful he will be back in the lineup at some point in December, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Shanahan has previously stated that Garoppolo will return as the starter once he's healthy. The offense has some sputters with Nick Mullens at quarterback, but they'll have to stick with him for at least a couple of more games. Once the calendar turns to December, we should see more information on when specifically Garoppolo will return.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo pulled at halftime    Sun Oct 11, 05:51 PM

Footballguys view: Garoppolo was falling apart at the end of the half. The team might believe he showed he wasn't ready physically or that leaving him in would do damage mentally, but either way they don't think Garoppolo should be out there. A big division matchup is up next vs. the Rams and Garoppolo should be out there, but one wonders about how long his leash is now.

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 25, and has been ruled out for Week 3.

Footballguys view: Nick Mullens will get the start for the 49ers this week. He played in eight games back in 2018 and is solid yet unspectacular as a starter. Mullens should have an easier matchup against a bad Giants secondary...but the 49ers are likely to run the ball as much as possible and limit what their passing game does. In other words, Mullens is not much of a fantasy option in Week 3.

CB Jason Verrett (hamstring) practiced in full all week and has been removed from the injury report.

Footballguys view: Ford is needed now more than ever with Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas out for the year but there is no timetable for his return.
