Steelers | James Conner surpasses 100-yard mark    Sun Sep 27, 06:38 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner rushed for 109 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries against the Houston Texans in Week 3. He also caught four passes for 40 yards during the game.

Footballguys view: Conner racked up yards against a weary defense and was a steady target for Ben Roethlisberger. He's leveling off as a potential RB1 after a rocky start. Next up is the Tennessee defense that Dalvin Cook just shredded today.

Steelers | James Conner, Benny Snell to split carries    Sun Sep 20, 11:14 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RBs James Conner and Benny Snell will reportedly split carries during Week 2's game against the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: Neither are good plays against a Broncos defense that held tough against Derrick Henry last week. This situation should resolve itself once one of the backs clearly outplays the other.

Steelers | Pittsburgh's injury report for Week 2    Fri Sep 18, 03:33 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers OL Stefen Wisniewski (chest) and OG David DeCastro (knee) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 2 against the Denver Broncos. QB Ben Roethlisberger (coach's decision), WR Diontae Johnson (toe), WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee), RB James Conner (ankle), C Maurkice Pouncey (coach's decision), OT Alejandro Villanueva (illness) and DE Stephon Tuitt (Achilles) practiced in full Friday, Sept. 18, and no longer appear on the injury report.

Footballguys view: The Steelers will be starting Kevin Dotson and Chuks Okorafor on the offensive line against the Broncos. They have used up their depth on the offensive line and we are only headed into Week 2. This could be a problem as we get further into the season.

Steelers | James Conner good to go for Week 2    Fri Sep 18, 02:43 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (ankle) was taken off the injury report Friday, Sept. 18, clearing the path for him to play in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: Conner will start but Benny Snell should get mixed in and Conner should feel pressure to perform after Snell looked so good in his absence last week. Conner is just a boom/bust RB2/Flex this week vs Denver.

Steelers | James Conner optimistic about status    Fri Sep 18, 12:50 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (ankle) said Friday, Sept. 18, that things are 'definitely trending in the right direction' for Week 2 after practicing Wednesday and Thursday.

Footballguys view: If Conner is active it probably just functions to keep both him and Benny Snell on our benches until this situation resolves itself. Whether Conner was out due to an injury or something else, Snell showed enough for the Steelers to be open to making a change at starting running back if the performances don't change dramatically.

Steelers | James Conner practices in full Thursday    Thu Sep 17, 04:09 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (ankle) practiced returned to a full practice Thursday, Sept. 17.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here. Conner did not participate in practice on Wednesday and is a full participant on Thursday. He's supposed to be the team's lead back if healthy but Benny Snell looked better in relief of Conner against the Giants in Week 1. Perhaps the Steelers split touches to keep Conner fresh. Watch to see what he can do in Friday's practice.

Steelers | James Conner misses practice    Wed Sep 16, 04:47 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (ankle) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Footballguys view: Mike Tomlin said they would 'leave the light on' for Conner. Benny Snell should be the lead back against the Broncos in Week 2. We consider him a RB2 against a Broncos defense that is easier to pass on than run on.

Steelers | James Conner not ruled out    Tue Sep 15, 12:39 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (ankle) won't be ruled out for Week 2, according to head coach Mike Tomlin, who said they'll leave the light on for him.

Footballguys view: Tomlin channeling his inner 'Motel 6' guy here. The Steelers were able to run the ball successfully with Benny Snell. He's a hot waiver wire pickup while Conner deals with this ankle injury. The Steelers also have Jaylen Samuels and Anthony McFarland to get some work in the backfield if need be.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Conner is the lead back and the Steelers will use him as a grinder. When they need a change of pace, expect rookie Anthony McFarland to get some work. Benny Snell and Jaylen Samuels could also get some looks here and there.

Steelers | James Conner never considered opting out    Wed Aug 12, 06:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner said Wednesday, Aug. 12, he never considered opting out, despite the fact he's a high-risk player as a cancer survivor. 'Going on four years now removed from cancer,' Conner said. 'I didn't really have to talk to my family. It was never a concern for me. I've been healthy for years now. It was an easy decision for me. I never really gave much thought to it. I'm healthy and my immune system is back healthy. I'm not worried.'

Footballguys view: Conner is a high-risk player but wanted to get out there and play. He'll be the lead back for the Steelers this year but we could see guys like Anthony McFarland mixed in as Pittsburgh might use more of a RBBC than some think.

Steelers | James Conner expected to play    Tue Jul 28, 12:27 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner is expected to play in 2020, according to a source, despite being a cancer survivor. New England Patriots OT Marcus Cannon chose to opt out as a fellow cancer survivor, spurring questions about Conner's intentions amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Conner is four years cancer-free and in phenomenal shape, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Footballguys view: As a cancer survivor, Conner would be considered 'high risk' and could get that increased stipend of $350,000 compared to others who are considered 'voluntary' and get $150,000 as a stipend. Conner is the top back in the Steelers room and his three-down skill set make him a mid-range RB2 for Fantasy GMs. He has a current ADP of RB16 (3.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | James Conner not counting carries    Tue Jun 2, 04:28 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner said Tuesday, June 2, he won't be keeping track of how many carries he gets in 2020. 'It's our job to be at our best no matter how many carries,' Conner said, via Ed Bouchette of TheAthletic.com. 'We got to start fast, we have to hit first as a back. That's what I'm going to take pride in this year, just to start fast, whether I'm the guy, however this year works. I said the goal is to win. We need to be ready at all times. Can't warm up to it. That's our slogan, that's what we've been saying: 'Can't warm up to it.' I'm not really paying attention to how many carries I need, I don't really believe in that.'

Footballguys view: Conner is going to get competition from guys like Jaylen Samuels, Benny Snell or rookie Anthony McFarland. He should be the starter, and Conner has low-end RB2 value for Fantasy GMs in 2020 due to his three-down skill set.

Steelers | James Conner still the featured back    Fri May 15, 10:02 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner will remain the featured back in 2020, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. 'James is a featured guy and proven runner when healthy,' Tomlin said. 'We're excited about him getting back to health and displaying that in 2020. Benny Snell is a guy that is capable of being a featured runner who plays with a physical style in a similar manner to James. He's capable of being a James-type of guy if James is unavailable.'

Footballguys view: Conner is still the lead back but his role could be smaller this year for a few reasons. He needs to stay healthy and a smaller workload may help him do that. The Steelers have spent draft picks on guys like Benny Snell (2019) and Anthony McFarland (2020) that could cut into Conner's playing time. Conner has a current ADP of RB19 (4.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Lighter workload for James Conner?    Sat May 2, 09:03 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner will likely have his carries 'cut back' in order to keep him healthy and to utilize other backs more frequently, according to Ed Bouchette of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: That seems to be the way things are trending for Conner. The Steelers have other options they can go to, including two fourth-round picks Benny Snell (2019) and Anthony McFarland (2020). Add in versatile, do-everything back in Jaylen Samuels and you can see how Conner might not get as many touches as in years past.

Steelers | James Conner much easier to corral in 2019    Sun Apr 5, 05:46 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner broke a tackle once only every 23.2 rush attempts last season. In 2018, he broke a tackle once every 10.8 carries.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Conner can play more like he did in 2018 coming up this season. The Steelers offense as a whole should be better and more wide open with the return of a healthy QB Ben Roethlisberger.

Steelers | Hope persists for James Conner    Thu Feb 13, 04:13 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner is still viewed as a starter by the team, and he's expected to have a bounceback season in 2020, according to general manager Kevin Colbert Thursday, Feb. 13. 'James Conner had a disappointing season in James Conner's viewpoint and ours, as well,' Colbert said. 'Our point to James was, 'You had an unfortunate year.' The year before that he was one of the best in the league.'' ... 'He's still a young player. We think there's something there. We know there's talent there. We hope James can regain it. And, if he's healthy, there's no reason he shouldn't. We don't want to say we don't have a starting running back because we feel we do.'

Footballguys view: The Steelers have hope that Conner can have a bounce-back season...but they also need to make plans at the position in case he doesn't. This is a talented running back class coming into the league in the 2020 NFL draft. We won't be surprised if the Steelers select a running back at some point in the draft and perhaps they could even add one in free agency.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (quadriceps) on Friday, Dec. 27, was ruled out of the team's Week 17 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Steelers | James Conner very iffy for Week 17    Tue Dec 24, 01:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner's (thigh) availability is very much in question for Week 17, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Tomlin said Conner's Week 17 availability is "very much in question." They'll monitor him during the week of practice and turn to Benny Snell, Kerrith Whyte and Jaylen Samuels if need be. The Steelers have a must-win against the Ravens if they want to go to the postseason (they also need the Titans to lose).

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (quad) is awaiting the results of an MRI on the quad injury he suffered on his final carry of Week 16.

Footballguys view: Conner gets banged up quite a bit, so the Steelers are used to playing without him. We'll see if he can be available for the Week 17 season finale against the Ravens. If not, the Steelers will turn to Benny Snell, Kerrith Whyte and Jaylen Samuels.

Steelers | James Conner out of game    Sun Dec 22, 02:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (thigh) suffered a thigh injury during the Week 16 game and is considered questionable to return.
