Saints | Week 15 return for Drew Brees?    Sun Nov 22, 11:03 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs, lung, shoulder) is expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks because of his injuries, and the team believes Week 15 is a realistic return date for him, according to sources. Brees hopes to be ready for the Week 14 game.

Saints | Drew Brees making progress    Sat Nov 21, 09:51 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs, lung) said his doctors have been encouraged by his progress, and he added that additional scans have revealed six more rib fractures than initially diagnosed.

Footballguys view: Brees could return for the fantasy playoffs but he doesn't have the upside to merit holding him while you could be using that spot to help elsewhere.

Saints | Drew Brees to miss at least three games    Fri Nov 20, 04:09 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs, lung) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Friday, Nov. 20.

Footballguys view: Brees is out for at least the next three games, but there's no certainty that he will play again this year. Taysom Hill is reportedly going to start and maybe even play all of the snaps over Jameis Winston, but Sean Payton would not name a starter today.

Saints | Drew Brees out at least two weeks    Wed Nov 18, 11:16 AM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) had no change in his status after a second opinion for cracked ribs and a collapsed lung. That means he's out at least two weeks, and they'll re-evaluate him.

Footballguys view: Brees it out of action for a couple of week at least with a painful injury. Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will compete for the starting quarterback job while Brees is out. The Saints could use Winston as the starter while also then using Hill more at the position.

Saints | More on Drew Brees    Tue Nov 17, 12:37 PM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) is seeking a second opinion after tests revealed five definite fractures in his ribs, but a source mentioned the possibility of more.

Footballguys view: We are all waiting for more information on this situation. The Saints will determine whether Brees will go on Injured Reserve after those results. Then, we need to determine whether it's Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill who takes over as the starter -- or if they'll use both more with Brees out.

Saints | Drew Brees out indefinitely    Mon Nov 16, 02:49 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs, lung) was diagnosed with a collapsed right lung as well as three rib fractures on his left side and two on his right side, according to a source. ESPN's Ed Werder notes 'it is uncertain' how much time Brees will be sidelined.

Footballguys view: The Saints are not going to rush Brees back as he deals with this serious injury. That means they'll turn things over to Jameis Winston while Brees recovers for a playoff run. Winston takes chances with the ball and looked shaky in relief duty on Sunday. Taysom Hill might get more work as a quarterback with Brees down as well.

Saints | Drew Brees could miss time    Mon Nov 16, 10:18 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) could miss time due to the injury to his ribs suffered in Week 10. For now, it's considered a rib contusion, but he'll have an MRI for cartilage damage Monday, Nov. 16.

Footballguys view: Rib injuries come down to pain tolerance. A bruised rib is painful, and this is something that could knock him out of action for a couple of weeks. Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill would fill in at the position with Brees down.

Saints | Drew Brees expected to have MRI, X-rays    Sun Nov 15, 09:54 PM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) suffered an injury to his ribs in the Week 10 game against the San Francisco 49ers, and head coach Sean Payton indicated Brees will have an MRI and X-rays to determine the severity of the injury. 'He took a heavy shot in the first half. As he came out in the second half, he felt it was really impacting him,' Payton said. 'So, specifically, he'll get an MRI and X-rays. He back felt sore. As he tried to throw, he just came up to me and said, 'Hey, I don't feel like I'm capable of playing.' And so, quickly, we made the switch and, you know, that happens sometimes.'

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees went 29-for-36 for 287 yards and two touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers in Week 7. He also rushed for two yards and one touchdown on three carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Brees sneak touchdown was possibly just short of the goal line and a fumble, but it was upheld. That's the only blemish on a terrific day without his top two receivers. Brees fantasy stock is up, although he's a sit against the Bears next week in 1QB leagues.

Saints | Two touchdowns for Drew Brees    Sun Oct 4, 05:15 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees went 19-for-25 for 246 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Detroit Lions in Week 4.

Footballguys view: Everything worked against the Lions defense, but Brees fantasy numbers didn't show it because the running backs scored on the ground three times. An early deflected ball led to an interception and 14-0 deficit but Brees was calmly executing to lead the Saints to a much needed win. Brees is a low ceiling QB1 against the Chargers next week, although Tom Brady threw five scores against the Chargers today and Brees will get Michael Thomas back.

Saints | Drew Brees, Emmanuel Sanders working out    Tue Jun 23, 08:31 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees and WR Emmanuel Sanders posted a short video clip on social media of the two players working out together on a Colorado high school football field Tuesday, June 23.

Footballguys view: Sanders gives Brees something he hasn't had in quite some time...another playmaking receiver opposite of Michael Thomas. We'll still see Thomas dominate on the field because you can't guard Mike, and that is going to open things up for Sanders. He's a savvy veteran who is tough and will get open regularly. That sounds like a great combination with Brees. He's a WR4 with upside for Fantasy GMs.

Saints | Drew Brees tops when kept safe    Sat May 23, 03:01 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is Pro Football Focus' highest-graded quarterback over the last two seasons when kept free from pressure.

Footballguys view: Brees is deadly when he has time to throw. He stays on time and on target better than any quarterback in the league. Brees may be playing his final season in 2020 and his game has not fallen off much if at all.

Saints | Drew Brees torched man and zone last season    Sun May 17, 04:35 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees was one of three quarterbacks to finish inside the top five in QBR against man coverage (78.6; fourth) and versus zone coverage (72.5; fifth) in 2019, according to ESPN's Matt Bowen.

Footballguys view: That's what Brees does...he torches defenses. Some may say Brees is not quite the quarterback he used to be and that's fine, Father Time catches up with everyone. However, Brees is still a top-tier passer and this type of success against man or zone coverage should continue this season.

Saints | Drew Brees on point again in 2019    Tue May 12, 10:18 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees threw a catchable ball on 82.8 percent of his pass attempts in 2019, according to Sports Info Solutions. The only other time a quarterback topped that mark over the last five seasons was when Brees threw a catchable ball 83.6 percent of the time in 2018.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Brees is more accurate than an Olympic archer (see that Sports Science special) and continues to play near the top of his game. Expect more of the same in 2020.

Saints | Drew Brees finished strong in 2019    Fri Apr 3, 11:15 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees threw an NFL-high 15 touchdowns over the final four games of 2019, tossing at least three touchdowns in every game.

Footballguys view: Brees missed time last year with an injury but came back strong. He's back for one more season and has not shown many signs of slowing down at all. The Saints added WR Emmanuel Sanders in free agency, giving yet another weapon to Brees and the passing attack.

Saints | Drew Brees locked in last season    Tue Mar 31, 10:39 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees threw an on-target pass - defined as a pass that did or would have hit the receiver - on a league-high 84.1 percent of his throws in 2019.

Footballguys view: Brees is locked in most every season. We're expecting more of the same this year as Brees is one of the most accurate quarterbacks in NFL history. With WR Emmanuel Sanders added to the offense, the Saints can be even more dangerous offensively.

Saints | Drew Brees agrees to extension    Tue Mar 17, 10:35 AM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Drew Brees agreed to a two-year deal worth about $50 million with the Saints Tuesday, March 17.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Brees signs a team-friendly deal to keep playing for the team he loves. The Saints could use more of Taysom Hill in 2020 to keep Brees fresh. Brees has already said that he's okay with that if the team wants to do that. This might be his final season in the NFL.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees reiterated Thursday, March 5, that he plans to re-sign with the Saints and added that he plans to finish his career in the Big Easy as well. 'Listen, I have no intention of going anywhere,' Brees said Thursday during a charity event. 'I don't care what the offer would be or what the situation might be, I am Who Dat Nation for life.'

Footballguys view: Brees is not done playing -- yet. He'll be back for the 2020 season and Teddy Bridgewater will move on in free agency. We'll see if Brees gives some snaps away to Taysom Hill as the team tries to get Hill groomed as a potential heir apparent to their future Hall of Fame passer.

Saints | Drew Brees coming back    Tue Feb 18, 01:08 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees announced he'll play in 2020.

Footballguys view: Big news for the Saints here as Brees is probably playing his last season in the NFL. This also means that Teddy Bridgewater is likely to move on in free agency, and he may command a salary that pays him around $30MM annually. The Saints will also likely put a first-round tender on RFA Taysom Hill. He can be groomed to be the eventual replacement for Brees.

Saints | Drew Brees willing to share load    Fri Jan 31, 09:09 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he would be willing to give more snaps to QB Taysom Hill if both players return in 2020. 'Call the plays that puts us in the best position to win,' Brees said. 'If that means Taysom Hill is taking 30 snaps a game, 25 snaps a game, so be it.'

Footballguys view: Brees, Hill and Teddy Bridgewater are all free agents this offseason. The Saints have some big decisions to make, provided that Brees does not retire. They won't be able to keep all three quarterbacks, but re-signing Brees and Hill might be the way they go.

Saints | Drew Brees still playing at high level    Thu Jan 30, 01:24 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, a pending free agent, is still performing at a high level, head coach Sean Payton said Thursday, Jan. 30, in an interview on ESPN's First Take. 'The job is for (Brees) is to win, and he's done that,' Payton said. 'Is the ball going down the field the same way? Maybe it's not. And yet his (yards per attempt) and all those things have been real good.'

Footballguys view: Brees may not quite be the player he used to be but his game has not fallen off a cliff. In fact, he can still be incredibly effective as a starter and with the Saints he keeps them a Super Bowl contender. Brees is going to take a month or so to make a decision on his future.

Saints | Sean Payton expects QB change    Thu Jan 30, 01:14 PM

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said Thursday, Jan. 30, that he doesn't expect QBs/pending free agents Drew Brees, Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill will all be back with the Saints next season. To have all three of those guys back is probably very unlikely,' Payton said. 'You really appreciate the season you had when you had all three of them.'

Footballguys view: Change is part of the game, and getting all three quarterbacks back in 2020 just isn't going to happen. Brees could remain as the starter if he decides he wants to keep playing and can come to an agreement with the Saints. Bridgewater was incredibly effective as the starter while Brees was out in 2019, and he could be the heir apparent to Brees. Hill is a great part-time player and will have a market for his services because of his versatility as a passer, runner and receiver.

Saints | Drew Brees plans to make decision soon    Sun Jan 26, 11:49 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Drew Brees said he plans to 'give it a month or so' before determining if he will return to the team for the 2020 season or retire.

Footballguys view: He had previously stated that he is not considering playing for any other teams. That means if it's the Saints or bust for Brees. He will make a decision soon enough for the team to go in a different direction if need be. Teddy Bridgewater is an unrestricted free agent in 2020 but loves the staff, his teammates and the city. He went 5-0 as the Saints starter when Brees was down in 2019 and could step in as the starter if Brees ends up retiring.

Saints | Drew Brees' decision on hold    Thu Jan 23, 01:34 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees isn't rushing his decision on whether he'll return for another season. I wanted to give it at least a few weeks, months, postseason, just to take a deep breath and decompress a little bit and get some time with the family and then just reassess,' Brees said Wednesday, Jan. 22, during an interview at the Pro Bowl.

Footballguys view: Brees may not quite be what he used to be but by no means is he done from a physical or abilities standpoint. He'll have to make a decision before the start of free agency in early March. This quarterback market is about to get crazy in the NFL.

Saints | GM wants Drew Brees to return    Wed Jan 22, 06:42 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Drew Brees is a player that the Saints want to keep as long as he wants to keep playing, according to general manager Mickey Loomis.

Footballguys view: This is going to be up to Brees. If he wants to keep playing, the Saints want to keep him around. Brees takes one year at a time and will spend this part of the offseason deciding what he wants to do.

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Drew Brees is expected to talk with head coach Sean Payton Monday, Jan. 13, and Payton said he expects Brees to be the Saints quarterback next season.

Footballguys view: The Saints have some big decisions this offseason. Brees is a free agent and so are backups Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill. After the loss to the Vikings in the Wild Card Round, Brees declined to comment on whether or not he would continue playing football. Over 40-years old Brees is clearly not the same player he used to be.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees declined to make any comment on his future in the wake of the team's Wild Card loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Jan. 5.

Footballguys view: The Saints have some interesting decisions in front of them. The veteran superstar turns 41 later this month and is set to become an unrestricted free agent.
