Saints | Sign Vick Ballard    Wed Feb 3, 06:09 PM

Free-agent RB Vick Ballard (Colts) signed a Reserve/Futures deal with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Footballguys view: Ballard is a decent all-purpose back, but injuries and inconsistencies have derailed his pro career.

Colts | Vick Ballard to IR    Thu Sep 17, 01:19 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (hamstring) cleared waivers and was placed on Reserve/Injured.

Footballguys view: The entire Colts offense looked hinky last weekend and Ballard wasn't really a factor anyway, so this is no big deal. We think Gore will be an OK RB2 even against what could be a tough Jets front seven, so you should consider him for your lineups.

Colts | Friday injury report for Week 1    Fri Sep 11, 05:16 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (hamstring) and CB Greg Toler (neck) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 11, and have been ruled out for Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills. LB Robert Mathis (Achilles') and CB D'Joun Smith (knee) were limited during practice and are listed as questionable. LB Nate Irving (knee), LB D'Qwell Jackson (toe), CB Sheldon Price (concussion) and LB Bjoern Werner (knee) fully participated in practice and are listed as probable.

Footballguys view: Josh Robinson will get the majority of the work backing up Frank Gore with Ballard out. There was some talk Mathis could be ready for this matchup, but it sounds like we won't know until game time.

Colts | Thursday practice report for Week 1    Thu Sep 10, 06:39 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (hamstring), LB Bjoern Werner (knee) and CB Greg Toler (neck) did not participate in practice Thursday, Sept. 10. LB Nate Irving (knee), LB D'Qwell Jackson (toe), LB Robert Mathis (Achilles') and CB D'Joun Smith (knee) were limited during practice, while CB Sheldon Price fully participated in practice.

Footballguys view: Hopefully this group will be healthier by Sunday. The Colts shouldn't be terribly challenged by the Bills passing game (such as it is) but will have to be on point to slow down LeSean McCoy. The Colts defense should be an OK start this week, as chances are the Bills won't pile the points on.

Colts | Josh Robinson the No. 2 RB    Mon Sep 7, 08:24 AM

Indianapolis Colts RB Josh Robinson will likely serve as the No. 2 running back behind RB Frank Gore. RB Vick Ballard (hamstring) re-injured his hamstring in the final preseason game.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to be dialed into the rookie here. Don't handcuff him to Frank Gore unless you have a deep bench, but keep Robinson on your waiver wire speed dial. He's a talented back with good balance and vision when running the rock.

Colts | Dan Herron, Vick Ballard injured    Thu Sep 3, 08:08 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron (shoulder) and RB Vick Ballard (hamstring) suffered injuries in the final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3, and will not return to the game.

Footballguys view: This is why starters don't get much play if any for the majority of the teams in the NFL this week. Neither of these players might be fantasy relevant unless Frank Gore gets hurt. Gore is a very nice RB2 this year though.

Colts | Vick Ballard doing individual work    Tue Jun 16, 12:19 AM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (Achilles') has resumed doing individual field work and he is shooting for Aug. 1 to return to football-related activities. He has yet to be medically cleared.

Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries are the career-ending injuries they used to be, but Ballard is facing an uphill battle. The Colts have a talented backfield led by Frank Gore, and Ballard may not be able to make the final roster. He'll compete with Dan Herron, Zurlon Tipton and Josh Robinson to establish the pecking order behind Gore.

Colts | Vick Ballard able to do some things    Sun Jun 14, 09:51 AM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (Achilles') has been able to participate in some individual drills this offseason.

Footballguys view: Ballard has not received medical clearance at this point but believes he can return to the field by August 1st. He'll compete with guys like Dan Herron, Josh Robinson and Zurlon Tipton to be the primary backup behind Frank Gore. He's no lock to make the final roster.

Colts | Vick Ballard making progress    Sun Apr 5, 11:53 AM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (Achilles') is doing well in his rehab from a torn Achilles' tendon but there is no timetable for his return to the field, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be, but the team will be cautious with Ballard as he recovers. Ballard is expected to compete with RB Dan Herron for the team's RB2 job if he is healthy.

Colts | Vick Ballard undergoes surgery    Wed Jul 30, 01:50 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (Achilles') underwent surgery Tuesday, July 29, to repair his torn Achilles' tendon.

Footballguys view: The team is expected to place Ballard on Injured Reserve at some point. Without Ballard the team will look to guys like Dan Herron, Davin Meggett and Phillip Tanner as a reserve running back behind Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw.

Colts | Vick Ballard tears Achilles'    Fri Jul 25, 07:08 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' tendon during practice Friday, July 25.

Footballguys view: That's a brutal piece of news for Ballard who was coming back from an ACL injury. Ahmad Bradshaw moves up the chain a bit and will be the direct backup to Trent Richardson. T-Rich is an RB3 right now, and you can probably move Bradshaw up to RB5 with the possibility he could have a much larger role as camp and the season go on.

Colts | Vick Ballard carted off    Fri Jul 25, 02:38 PM

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (ankle) was carted off the practice field Friday, July 25, with what appeared to be an ankle injury.

Footballguys view: This confirms earlier reports that Ballard's injury may be serious. Coming back from an ACL injury, Ballard was likely to see some carries in general and possibly a lot of Trent Richardson struggled to start the season. We'll monitor this but a significant injury could destroy any fantasy value he had.

Colts | Vick Ballard limps off the practice field    Fri Jul 25, 02:27 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (undisclosed) limped off the practice field Friday, July 25.

Footballguys view: Other reports have said he was carted off the field after suffering the injury on a receiving route. Recovering from an ACL injury, an ankle problem would be a real blow to his comeback this year, and put more pressure on Trent Richardson. Keep an eye on this as a long term injury could improve the value of both Richardson (currently an RB3) and Ahmad Bradshaw (currently sitting as an RB6)

Colts | Vick Ballard passes physical    Wed Jul 23, 09:28 AM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (knee) reported to camp and has passed his physical.

Footballguys view: Ballard is competing for a reserve role with the Colts this year. If healthy, he could win the team's third-string job behind Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw.

Colts | Trent Richardson will need to produce     Sat Jul 12, 12:15 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson will need to produce right away in the running game if he wants to keep the starting job, because the team will not wait for him to turn things around if RB Ahmad Bradshaw or Vick Ballard are playing well.

Footballguys view: Richardson needs to get his confidence back. He looked tentative and lost last year after the trade which sent him from Cleveland to Indianapolis. Richardson is one of the most naturally talented runners in the game today, and he needs to start playing up to the potential he showed during his rookie season in 2012.

Colts | Trent Richardson will get first chance to start    Mon Jun 30, 04:20 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson will be given the first shot at starting running back. He is more talented than RBs Ahmad Bradshaw and Vick Ballard, and the Colts don't want to show that their trade for him last September was a failure.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Richardson burned a lot of fantasy owners last year. He was regarded as a first-round pick in most fantasy leagues after a rookie season where he rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and had over 50 catches for the Browns. Cleveland quickly gave up on him last year, and shipped him to the Colts. Richardson never looked comfortable in his new surroundings, and he finished the season as the 34th-best fantasy RB (9th-best in 2012). His current ADP is RB26 (5.07) in 12-team PPR leagues. Take advantage of Richardson's reputation with fantasy owners if he falls too far in your league.

Colts | Vick Ballard not expected for minicamp    Mon Jun 16, 03:03 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (knee) is not expected to be a part of the team's minicamp, according to a source, as he continues to recover from ACL surgery.

Footballguys view: Ballard is going to be competing for a backup spot on the roster this year. He has a versatile skill set and can contribute as a runner or receiver out of the backfield.

Colts | Vick Ballard wants to be the H-back    Mon May 5, 02:12 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (knee) recently said he wants to be the team's H-back.

Footballguys view: It would be an interesting move for Ballard. We should see Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw as the top backs for the Colts this year.

Colts | Donald Brown likely would be No. 3 RB    Sat Feb 15, 08:41 PM

Indianapolis Colts impending free-agent RB Donald Brown likely would be behind RBs Vick Ballard and Trent Richardson on the depth chart if he re-signs with the team this offseason.

Footballguys view: Brown may choose to move on in free agency so he could be closer to a starting job. He finally started playing up to his potential in 2012 and led the Colts in rushing.

Colts | Vick Ballard placed on IR    Sat Sep 14, 11:14 AM

The Indianapolis Colts have placed RB Vick Ballard (knee) on Injured Reserve, ending his 2013 season. In a corresponding move, the team signed practice squad RB Kerwynn Williams to their active roster. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Williams is an interesting player to watch in super deep dynasty leagues. He's a speed back who can make plays in the open field. Williams changes direction quickly without losing much speed and can be used effectively as a receiver out of the backfield.

Colts | Vick Ballard update    Fri Sep 13, 01:07 PM

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (knee) will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in practice Thursday, Sept. 12. He will undergo season-ending surgery and has already been put on Injured Reserve. Ballard was injured in a non-contact drill Thursday. RB Ahmad Bradshaw will now take the lead running back duties, with RB Donald Brown sharing touches.

Colts | Vick Ballard done for the year    Fri Sep 13, 12:28 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (knee) will miss the remainder of the season after injuring his knee in practice Thursday, Sept. 12.

Footballguys view: Ahmad Bradshaw's stock, but there is still good reason to believe that he can't hold up under a starter's workload. The Colts will likely mix in Donald Brown, and the passing game likely to get as much of the surplus touches freed up as the running game. Sell Bradshaw if you can get RB2 value on this news, and be happy if you own Andrew Luck or Reggie Wayne. TY Hilton, Darrius Heyward-Bey, and even Dwayne Allen could be helped by this.

Colts | Vick Ballard limited     Thu Sep 12, 05:09 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (knee) was limited in practice Thursday, Sept. 12.

Footballguys view: Ballard and Ahmad Bradshaw both are banged up a bit and Indianpolis faces a tough Miami front seven which torched the Browns' offensive line and shut down Trent Richardson in Week 1. Ballard is not Richardson, so even healthy he's not facing a productive day.

Colts | Happy with Vick Ballard's pass protection    Tue Sep 10, 06:34 PM

Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano was happy with RB Vick Ballard's pass protection in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders. Ballard was 6-for-6 in pass-blocking situations last weekend.

Footballguys view: You've got to protect Andrew Luck if you want to see the field. Ballard is working together with Ahmad Bradshaw in the Colts' RBBC. He could have fantasy value as a TD vulture in the red zone.

Colts | Vick Ballard sees most work    Sun Sep 8, 04:37 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard had 13 carries for 63 yards in Week 1, while RB Ahmad Bradshaw rushed seven times for 26 yards.

Footballguys view: Ballard got most of the work early, as Bradshaw is being eased in coming back from offseason foot surgery. The Dolphins defense isn't a great draw for the Colts next week, so it might be best to continue to avoid this backfield for fantasy.

Colts | Ahmad Bradshaw probable    Fri Sep 6, 03:47 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 6, and is listed as probable for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Bradshaw is a good flex play in a great matchup, but the Colts could ease him into action, as he did not play in the preseason. They might also be inclined to put him on the bench once the game gets out of hand, so Vick Ballard is also an attractive flex play in very deep leagues.

Colts | Ahmad Bradshaw to get lion's share    Mon Sep 2, 08:42 AM

Indianapolis Colts RB Ahmad Bradshaw is expected to get the lion's share of the workload in the backfield with RBs Donald Brown and Vick Ballard.

Footballguys view: No real surprise here. The Colts added Bradshaw this offseason to be the lead running back. Injury is the only (constant) concern with Bradshaw. If healthy he should perfectly fit into Pep Hamilton's West Coast offense.

Colts | Expected to use committee at RB    Wed Aug 28, 02:01 PM

Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton is expected to use a running-back-by-committee approach this season with RBs Ahmad Bradshaw, Vick Ballard and Donald Brown getting plenty of work.

Footballguys view: That makes the most sense. Bradshaw is a talented player but durability is a huge concern. By using a RBBC we could see Bradshaw stay fresh during the course of the season.

Colts | Ahmad Bradshaw opening on PUP    Tue Jul 23, 06:48 PM

The Indianapolis Colts placed RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) on the Physically Unable to Perform list for training camp Tuesday, July 23.

Colts | Rookie RB Williams could be mixed in    Sat Jul 6, 07:20 PM

Indianapolis Colts rookie RB Kerwynn Williams (Utah State) could be mixed in the RB rotation as a receiver out of the backfield.

Footballguys view: Williams is a speed back with good burst and field vision. He became a starter in college after Robert Turbin (Seahawks) and Michael Smith (Buccaneers) were drafted in 2012. Williams lead the WAC in rushing last year but only had three 20+ carry games during his college career. He needs to improve his patience as a runner if he wants to maximize his rushing ability as a pro.

He had surgery on the foot six months ago and continues to be brought along slowly in his recovery. He plans to be ready to go when Indy's training camp opens July 27.   Colts | Ahmad Bradshaw agrees to one-year deal    Tue Jun 11, 01:54 PM

Free-agent RB Ahmad Bradshaw has agreed to a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts.
