FanDuel was back at it again with their massive Week 9 Sunday Million contest, requiring a $25 entry fee with 26,405 people getting paid out at least $50. This massive $3 million GPP tournament had 137,931 entries and sold out a few hours before kickoff. Each week FanDuel will be running a Sunday Million GPP Contest and we will break it down here at Footballguys.com and see what the keys were to having the top lineup on the week and taking home the top prize of $500,000.
Here's how Week 9 of the Sunday Million shook out.
|
DFS Screen Name | Points | Prize Money |
1st | rtoraine | 229.18 | $500,000 |
2nd | mmollica | 224.94 | $150,000 |
3rd | dudeoflife | 224.04 | $75,000 |

Rtoraine is the newest winner of the FanDuel Sunday Million contest and took home a cool $500,000 top prize. Rtoraine's team was a very well balanced tam with only two players priced over $8,000 in Adrian Peterson and Antonio Brown. Also the team did not stack their QB/WR together but instead stacked the Pittsburgh offense with DeAngelo Williams and Antonio Brown who both happened to be the top scorers at their positions this week. Also both Williams and Brown were rtoraine's top owned players and the only two that were owned about 6% on his team. He had 7 out of 10 players that were 6% owned and under which helped him climb up the leaderboard rather quickly.
Cam Newton was his choice at QB and he delivered in a big way against the Packers with 34.58 FanDuel points and was priced fair at only $7,900 and even better was only owned by 2.2% of the field. At RB he went with a stud in Adrian Peterson at $8,400 and he was only owned by 3% of the field which helped offset the high ownership rate of the value play of the week in DeAngelo Williams at $6,500 who scored a position high of 37.50 points. The WR core was an interesting one as he went with players priced at $8,700, $7,400 and $6,300 in Brown, Cobb, and Matthews. Choosing his WRs in this way helped him get a more balanced receiving core and it might be something worth looking at for future Sunday Million tournaments as you pick your WR1 in the above $8,000 range, and your WR2 in the $7,000 - $8,000 range while trying to find a huge upside WR in the $6,000 and below range.
With Rob Gronkowski and the Patriots not putting up a ton of fantasy points the teams that faded the Patriots benefited a great deal this week. At TE you had Delanie Walker in Tennessee who had a massive 2 touchdown performance and was priced at only $5,500 at a 6% ownership rate while putting up the highest score at the position with 27 points. TE is just like QB if you can find one of the top 2 or 3 plays each week and lock them into that one single spot at a very low ownership rate and if they hit your team has a huge advantage over the field. Rtoraine did just that at all the single position spots as he had Cam Newton at 2.2%, Delanie Walker at 6%, Josh Bown at 3.5% and the New York Giants defense at 1.9%.

WR | Jordan Matthews | $6,300 | 23.80 | 1.4% |
WR | Antonio Brown | $8,700 | 37.10 | 25.1% |
TE | Delanie Walker | $5,500 | 27.00 | 6.0% |
K | Josh Brown | $4,800 | 17.00 | 3.5% |

$60,000 | 229.18 |
Going through the top 10 teams in Week 9 of the Sunday Million the theme was to have the Pittsburgh RB/WR stack of DeAngelo Williams and Antonio Brown paired together. The combo was on every single top 10 team in the Sunday Million and although they were both 25%+ owned individually their percentage owned as a combo was surely a lot less as a lot of people playing in tournaments don't like to play a RB and WR from the same team in their contest.
At the quarterback position it was a battle between Cam Newton and Marcus Mariota for who you wanted to have on your team as each of them were on 4 of the top 8 teams. Drew Brees and Derek Carr were the other two quarterbacks that made the list on the 9th and 10th place teams. The top 10 scores ranged from 229 to 216 points in what was a fairly high scoring week thanks to some of the higher owned value plays hitting home runs.
At running back behind DeAngelo Williams it was a variety of options that helped teams score big this week. Jeremy Langford was the other very popular value play at RB at just $6,400 he was on 4 teams, and Lamar Miller was on 2 along with Devontae Freeman. Adrian Peterson was only on one of the top 10 teams and it just so happened that was the team that placed first. The last RB to make the list was Chris Ivory who scored a handfull of short touchdowns and was on the 10th place team.
After Antonio Brown at the WR spot it was Alshon Jeffery, Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree, and Julio Jones that were the next most popular plays at the position. The tight end position was Delanie Walker on 7 teams with Bennett on 2 and Richard Rodgers on the other one. Josh Brown was the popular play at the kicker spot showing up on 5 teams and it was the New York Jets who were rostered by 8 teams to fill out the popular plays this week.
