Packers, Green Bay GBP Def $1.00
Ravens, Baltimore BAL Def $1.00
Wilson, Marquess CHI WR $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Balanced approach and don’t overpay.

Best Pick:

Odell Beckham - $43.  Beckham has crazy talent and in a PPR format, he will be a lock to finish in the top five, and could possibly be the #1 fantasy WR this season. Rudnicki went after him hard and paid a good chunk of his cap to get him. But when the dust finally settled, Beckham was the #4 receiver in terms of cost, making him an excellent pick given he’s first round talent in a draft PPR league.

Worst Pick:

Michael Crabtree - $3. Rudnicki really didn’t have a bad pick in the draft, but his WR group is pretty thin given he has to start 3-4 of them every week. Crabtree was his 4th WR in a PPR league and while the $3 pricetag means he didn’t overpay for him, he might have been better off spending a couple extra bucks to get someone like Kenny Stills ($5), Torry Smith ($7) or Eric Decker ($7).

Evaluation:

Aaron built a solid team at every position while sticking to his guns on valuation. He didn’t overpay for anyone and built a very balanced team with strong talent at every position. LeSean McCoy was Rudnicki’s first pick off the board and given that Aaron is a big Bills fan, you might be tempted to call it a ‘homer’ pick. But McCoy was the 11th RB off the board based on price and that’s solid value for him in a PPR league.

Player Winning Bid
Bryant, Dez DAL WR $45.00
Gronkowski, Rob NEP TE $45.00
Lacy, Eddie GBP RB $39.00
Benjamin, Kelvin CAR WR $20.00
Newton, Cam CAR QB $9.00

Johnson, David ARI RB $7.00
Mason, Tre STL RB $5.00

Bengals, Cincinnati CIN Def $1.00
Griffin III, Robert WAS QB $1.00
Hunter, Justin TEN WR $1.00
Inman, Dontrelle SDC WR $1.00
Lee, Marqise JAC WR $1.00
Matthews, Chris SEA WR $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Go big early. Hicks landed three of the first five players nominated, including two of the top four most expensive players taken (Dez Bryant and Rob Gronkowski). Hicks spent 65% of his bankroll in the first 15 minutes of the auction.

Best Pick:

Eddie Lacy - $39. Taking the first RB off the board in an auction usually means you have to overpay for the talent but that didn’t happen in this case. Lacy is a top five fantasy back, even in a PPR league and given that guys like Adrian Peterson ($47) and C.J. Anderson ($40) have lower fantasy value than Lacy, Hicks landed a great back for a below-market price.

Worst Pick:

Rob Gronkowski - $45. It’s very typical to overpay for the first few players off the auction block. Every owner has their full bankroll and it’s easy to bid a player up above his value. Gronkowski is going in the first round of most PPR drafts, so landing him right out of the gate is to be expected. Landing him as the most expensive TE in the auction is also expected since he is significantly better than the rest of the pack, and this league is TE required. Finally, this auction really faded the TE position, but Hicks couldn’t have known that was going to happen at the start of the draft. That being said, when the dust finally settled, Hicks could have landed three second-tier TEs for what he paid for Gronkowski and had money left over. It might not seem fair given all of the above, but paying $45 for Gronkowski really put Hicks at a disadvantage.

Evaluation:

Go big or go home. Hicks bet the farm on Rob Gronkowski, Dez Bryant and Eddie Lacy. By grabbing these three guys right out of the gate, he’s tied his entire season to the performance of these three guys. You typically overpay a bit at the beginning of an auction because other teams have the bankroll to push up the price above value. Landing three guys in the first five picks meant that Hicks had to sit back and watch all the value picks that typically make or break your team go by because he didn’t have enough cash in reserve.

Chad Parsons

Player Winning Bid
Nelson, Jordy GBP WR $35.00
Cooks, Brandin NOS WR $25.00
Gurley, Todd STL RB $17.00
Bell, Joique DET RB $16.00
Jackson, Vincent TBB WR $16.00
Watkins, Sammy BUF WR $14.00
Yeldon, T.J. JAC RB $14.00
White, Roddy ATL WR $11.00
Tannehill, Ryan MIA QB $9.00
Adams, Davante GBP WR $7.00
White, Kevin CHI WR $7.00
Perriman, Breshad BAL WR $6.00
Seferian-Jenkins, Austin TBB TE $6.00
McFadden, Darren DAL RB $5.00
Sankey, Bishop TEN RB $4.00
Huff, Josh PHI WR $2.00
Moncrief, Donte IND WR $2.00
Williams, Andre NYG RB $2.00
Chiefs, Kansas City KCC Def $1.00
Walsh, Blair MIN PK $1.00

Overall Strategy:

A conservative approach with heavy focus on RB/WR.

Best Pick:

Jordy Nelson - $35. Nelson is going at the end of the first round of most 12 team PPR leagues right now, so landing him for only $35 was a great buy. By the time the draft was finished, Nelson was the #8 WR taken based on price.  Excellent value for a 1st round pick.

Worst Pick:

Austin Seferian-Jenkins - $6. This is a PPR, TE required league and it looks like Parsons forgot about that in the first part of the draft. Seferian-Jenkins was the only TE that Parsons drafted and the $6 price tag has him valued as a top 12 fantasy TE when most projections have him as a mid-tier backup. With guys like Dwayne Allen, Jason Witten and Kyle Rudolph all going for $4, Parsons probably overpaid a bit for a guy that hasn’t prove he is a top tier fantasy TE.

Evaluation:

Parsons hammered the RB and WR positions, hoping to find a diamond in the rough to cover the holes at his other positions. He only drafted one QB (Ryan Tannehill) and one TE (Austin Seferian-Jenkins), and both are not really considered star-quality players at their position. Even his kicker Blair Walsh isn’t expected to be a top-12 fantasy kicker this season. To be successful, Parson is going to need two or three of his RB/WR combo to really blow up this season and dramatically outperform their projected values.

Dan Hindery

Player Winning Bid
Bell, Le'Veon PIT RB $43.00
Murray, DeMarco PHI RB $33.00
Hill, Jeremy CIN RB $32.00
Cobb, Randall GBP WR $30.00
Jeffery, Alshon CHI WR $29.00
Fitzgerald, Larry ARI WR $8.00
Palmer, Carson ARI QB $4.00
Witten, Jason DAL TE $4.00
Freeman, Devonta ATL RB $3.00
Ebron, Eric DET TE $2.00
Flacco, Joe BAL QB $2.00
Funchess, Devin CAR WR $2.00
Britt, Kenny STL WR $1.00
Cardinals, Arizona ARI Def $1.00
Dalton, Andy CIN QB $1.00
Langford, Jeremy CHI RB $1.00
Parkey, Cody PHI PK $1.00
Quick, Brian STL WR $1.00
Toon, Nick NOS WR $1.00
White, James NEP RB $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Focus on a strong core of RB/WR and fill in the gaps with value and high-potential players.

Best Pick:

Alshon Jeffery - $29. With Brandon Marshall out of the way, Alshon Jeffery is in a position to showcase his talent in Chicago this season. He’s a top tier fantasy WR with low floor and solid upside based on how he’s used this season. With Randall Cobb already on the roster, Jeffery gives Hindery two top fantasy WRs in a PPR league.

Worst Pick:

Carson Palmer - $4. It’s hard to knock a guy for spending just $4 on a player, but Palmer barely qualifies as a backup in a PPR league with only 4 pts per passing TD.  Hindery landed Andy Dalton for just $1 and Dalton will probably finish with more points than Palmer this season.

Evaluation:

Hindery built a solid corp of RBs and WRs with Le’Veon Bell, DeMarco Murray, Jeremy Hill, Randall Cobb and Alshon Jeffery. All five are projected to be top tier players at their positons. Even with Bell missing the first few games of the season, he’s still projected to be the top fantasy back this year. If Murray and Hill can carry his team until Bell is back in the lineup, Hindery is going to be a tough team to beat. Nice drafting.

David Dodds

Player Winning Bid
Luck, Andrew IND QB $31.00
Hopkins, DeAndre HOU WR $26.00
Sanders, Emmanuel DEN WR $25.00
Ingram, Mark NOS RB $20.00
Gordon, Melvin SDC RB $19.00
Matthews, Jordan PHI WR $18.00
Jackson, DeSean WAS WR $11.00
Ryan, Matt ATL QB $9.00
Garcon, Pierre WAS WR $7.00

Bowe, Dwayne CLE WR $2.00
Floyd, Malcom SDC WR $2.00
Blue, Alfred HOU RB $1.00
Herron, Dan IND RB $1.00
Hurns, Allen JAC WR $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Value, Value, Value. Dodds faded the top tier position players, landed his favorite QB and cleaned up on second tier talent.

Best Pick:

Emmanuel Sanders - $25. Sanders isn’t considered a ‘top tier’ fantasy WR, but he does have a big upside and he cranks out the points from week to week and he has the potential for a top ten finish. At $25, he was the #15 WR based on cost, giving Dodds a solid WR with upside for a second tier price. DeAndre Hopkins at $26 fits the same mold.

Worst Pick:

Pierre Garcon - $7. Dodds didn’t have a ‘bad’ pick and Garcon is worth the $7 that Dodds paid for him. That being said, Dodds already had DeSean Jackson on his roster and guys like Marques Colston ($5) or Anquan Boldin ($7) would have given him more diversity with about the same point potential.

Evaluation:

There are plenty of different styles in an auction draft as you’ll see from the other players here. But at some point, everyone needs to focus on value. How much of your salary cap do you spend on a player compared with how many points they will produce.  Dodds is a master at this and his team is a prime example of value based picks. Maybe he paid a little more than he should have for Andrew Luck ($31). But at the time, Aaron Rodgers ($24) was already off the board and the drop off after those two is pretty big. It was worth it to overpay a little at that point. Given that it only cost him $31 and it was his most expensive player, Dodds was smart to overpay a little to have a top tier QB. He still had plenty of money left over to clean up in the middle tier.

Jeff Haseley

Player Winning Bid
Hilton, T.Y. IND WR $30.00
Forsett, Justin BAL RB $29.00
Ellington, Andre ARI RB $25.00
Edelman, Julian NEP WR $18.00
Tate, Golden DET WR $18.00

Brown, John ARI WR $11.00
Landry, Jarvis MIA WR $11.00
Brady, Tom NEP QB $10.00

Cutler, Jay CHI QB $3.00
Miller, Heath PIT TE $3.00
Smith, Steve BAL WR $3.00
Sproles, Darren PHI RB $3.00
Amendola, Danny NEP WR $1.00
Daniels, Owen DEN TE $1.00
Gray, Jonas NEP RB $1.00
Vikings, Minnesota MIN Def $1.00
Vinatieri, Adam IND PK $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Conservative approach with a QB fade. Focus on value at the RB/ WR position.

Best Pick:

Justin Forsett - $29.  Haseley landed a top ten fantasy back in PPR for a second tier price. With guys like Adrian Peterson and C. J. Anderson commanding more than $40 each, Forsett looks like a bargain at just $29.

Worst Pick:

Tom Brady - $10. Cam Newton ($9) was already off the board, but he would have been better value to land him at $10 instead of Brady. Matt Ryan ($9) went after Brady but would also have been a better choice in terms of starting QB from week to week. Brady is going to miss the start of the season and in a 4 Pt. Passing TD league, that pushes his value down further. As a #2 QB, Brady makes sense. As his #1, with Jay Cutler ($3) as his backup, Haseley is putting a lot of faith in his RBs and WRs.

Evaluation:

Value is important in an auction draft, but sometimes you can over-focus on it and miss out on some quality players. That’s what it feels like when you look at Haseley’s final roster. Guys like T.Y. Hilton, Julian Edelman and Golden Tate are solid WRs in a PPR league, but with no clear #1 guy, this lineup is going to come up short some weeks. Forsett and Andre Ellington are reasonable RBS to have on your team, but they would be an RB2 for a majority of the league. If at least one guy blows up every week, this team will be fine, but on paper this team looks like they will have an above average PPG with a 7-6 record at the end of the season.

Mark Wimer

Player Winning Bid
Brown, Antonio PIT WR $47.00
Graham, Jimmy SEA TE $28.00
Miller, Lamar MIA RB $20.00
Agholor, Nelson PHI WR $15.00
Roethlisberger, Ben PIT QB $13.00
Coleman, Tevin ATL RB $12.00
Crowell, Isaiah CLE RB $11.00
Ivory, Chris NYJ RB $9.00
Cameron, Jordan MIA TE $8.00
Smith, Torrey SFO WR $7.00
Stafford, Matthew DET QB $7.00
Stills, Kenny MIA WR $5.00
Seahawks, Seattle SEA Def $4.00
Bush, Reggie SFO RB $3.00
Rams, St. Louis STL Def $3.00
Kearse, Jermaine SEA WR $2.00
Starks, James GBP RB $2.00
Texans, Houston HOU Def $2.00
Bailey, Dan DAL PK $1.00
Strong, Jaelen HOU WR $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Secure the top WR and then let others spend their money. Wimer landed just one player out of the first 37 off of the board.

Best Pick:

Antonio Brown - $47. In a PPR format, it’s hard not to consider Antonio Brown as the #1 overall pick. Le’Veon Bell is also in that discussion, but his suspension makes Brown the safer choice. If you’re going to spend a quarter of your bankroll on one player, Bryant is the guy that you’d pick.

Worst Pick:

Jimmy Graham - $28. With Rob Gronkowski going for a whopping $45, landing the #2 fantasy TE for just $28 looked like a bargain. This auction really faded the TE position though and similar tier guys like Greg Olsen ($13), Travis Kelce ($15) and Martellus Bennett ($15) went for a lot less. To be fair, Graham was the second TE off the board so Wimer didn’t know that people were going to lay off that position so much, but after Gronkowski, there are a lot of similar tier players to Graham that came much cheaper.

Evaluation:

Antonio Brown was tied as the most expensive player taken in this auction, but as mentioned above, he’s worth it. But after spending a big chunk of his salary cap to acquire Brown, Wimer didn’t land his second player until #38 overall. That was Jimmy Graham who, in hind sight, Wimer overpaid for.  This put Wimer in a hole and his other positions suffered because of it. His starting RBS Lamar Miller ($20), Tevin Coleman ($12) and Isaiah Crowell ($11) are RB2/RB3 quality and his other two starting WRs will be Nelson Agholor ($15) and Torre Smith ($7) and they would be WR3 or lower in most 12 team PPR leagues. He also drafted three defenses, when most teams only drafted one. Given that one of them were the Seattle Seahawks, he would have been better off adding that money to the RB/WR position instead.

Matt Bitonti

Player Winning Bid
Charles, Jamaal KCC RB $42.00
Evans, Mike TBB WR $38.00
Allen, Keenan SDC WR $20.00
Morris, Alfred WAS RB $20.00
Cooper, Amari OAK WR $17.00
Foles, Nick STL QB $12.00
Bradford, Sam PHI QB $8.00
Ertz, Zach PHI TE $8.00
Cruz, Victor NYG WR $6.00
Randle, Rueben NYG WR $5.00
Barth, Connor DEN PK $3.00
Davis, Knile KCC RB $3.00
Latimer, Cody DEN WR $3.00
West, Terrance CLE RB $3.00
Wheaton, Markus PIT WR $3.00
Winston, Jameis TBB QB $3.00
Jets, New York NYJ Def $2.00
Artis-Payne, Cameron CAR RB $1.00
Fleener, Coby IND TE $1.00
Williams, Maxx BAL TE $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Go big on a RB and build the team that you want, even if you have to overpay a bit.

Best Pick:

Jamaal Charles - $42. Charles is a beast in PPR format and with Le’Veon Bell missing time at the beginning of the season and Matt Forte being a question mark with a new Chicago coaching staff, Charles could finish the season as the top fantasy back in PPR.

Worst Pick:

Nick Foles - $12. In a PPR league with only 4 pts per passing TD, QB isn’t a position of priority. But spending $12 for Nick Foles is a head scratcher. Bitonti must really think Foles is going to be something special this season. Cam Newton ($9) and Matt Ryan ($9) are all rated much higher based on current projections and would have given Bitonti additional cash for other positions.

Evaluation:

Comparing projected points with percentage of cap spent, it looks like Bitonti overpaid on several of his players. Mike Evans ($38) is only projected to be a WR2 and Sam Bradford ($8) is barely projected to be a backup QB in a 12 team league. But the beauty of an auction league is that you can have the players that you want to target if you’re willing to pay for them. If Bitonti has a strong feeling about Nick Foles, Mike Evans and Alfred Morris ($20), he can pay a little extra for them and reap the benefits if he’s correct. Jamaal Charles is a great back to build around, and if Bitonti is right, he’s going to be tough to beat from week to week.

Matt Harmon

Player Winning Bid
Anderson, C.J. DEN RB $40.00
Thomas, Demaryius DEN WR $40.00
Bryant, Martavis PIT WR $20.00
Robinson, Allen JAC WR $17.00
Maclin, Jeremy KCC WR $14.00

Williams, DeAngelo PIT RB $3.00
Panthers, Carolina CAR Def $2.00
Beasley, Cole DAL WR $1.00
Crosby, Mason GBP PK $1.00
Smith, Geno NYJ QB $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Target a tier 1 RB and WR, then pound the RB/WR positions while finding value at QB and TE.

Best Pick:

Demaryius Thomas -$40.  Thomas is going in the first round of most PPR leagues and Harmon landed him for slightly below market value.  Thomas is going to finish in the top five, and could even challenge for #1 overall WR this season in a PPR league, but at $40 in this auction, Thomas as the #6 most expensive WR.

Worst Pick:

Martavis Bryant - $20. At $20, Bryant was tied with Keenan Allen and Kelvin Benjamin as the #16 WR based on money spent. But based on current projections, Bryant is only expected to be a WR3. Allen and Benjamin are both high WR2 with potential to reach WR1.  Harmon may be banking on Bryant cutting into Antonio Brown’s numbers, but on paper it looks like he overpaid for Bryant at this point.

Evaluation:

Harmon landed both C.J. Anderson and Demaryius Thomas at $40 each, locking in 40% of his $200 salary cap on one team. If Denver continues to be the high-powered offensive unit they have been over the past few seasons, this could be a smart play. However, if Denver runs into a tough match-up, or Peyton Manning starts to slip, Harmon’s team is going to suffer. Despite the heavy Denver flavor, Harmon did a nice job balancing out his unit.  He stuck to the RB/WR position for his top salaries, and still landed Eli Manning for a reasonable $7. DeAngelo Williams should provide a bump early in the season, but when Le’Veon Bell comes back, Williams will basically be dead weight.

Maurile Tremblay

Player Winning Bid
Forte, Matt CHI RB $39.00

Lockett, Tyler SEA WR $1.00
Novak, Nick SDC PK $1.00
Patriots, New England NEP Def $1.00
Royal, Eddie CHI WR $1.00
Sanu, Mohamed CIN WR $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Target the guys behind the top rated players and look for value at every position.

Best Pick:

Aaron Rodgers - $24. Quarterbacks are not as important in this format, but Maurile landed one of the best for just $24. Rodgers could easily be the top fantasy QB this season, and he was the first QB off the board in this auction. But instead of overpaying like some of the guys did at RB and TE, Maurile landed Rodgers for a lot less than the #1 projected QB Andrew Luck ($31).

Worst Pick:

Steve Johnson - $5. Maurile didn’t have any ‘bad’ picks in this draft, but he reached a little on Steve Johnson. Guys like Marcus Colston ($5), Kenny Stills ($5) or Kendall Wright ($5) are projected 15 or more WR slots higher than Johnson in a PPR league.

Evaluation:

Maurile is another team that landed solid value at almost every position. In this format, Matt Forte, Aaron Rodgers and Martellus Bennett are all projected to have top five finishes at their respective positions. A.J. Green and Arian Foster are rated in the top 10 at their positions as well. That’s a super strong base to start from every week. Add in later round value picks like Carlos Hyde ($14), Brandon Lafell ($8) and Dwayne Allen ($4) and Tremblay has a team that’s going to be tough to beat.

Scott Bischoff

Player Winning Bid
Johnson, Calvin DET WR $44.00

Williams, Terrance DAL WR $4.00
Eagles, Philadelphia PHI Def $3.00
Broncos, Denver DEN Def $2.00
Bryant, Matt ATL PK $2.00
Prater, Matt DET PK $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Grab a big WR, then focus on value plays at RB/WR. Fade the TE positon and stockpile QBs that present value.

Best Pick:

C.J. Spiller - $27. Spiller is projected to be a high RB2, but he has the upside to put up RB1 numbers this season. In a PPR league, Spiller has been pretty solid and with a QB like Drew Brees getting him the ball, he could really take off this season. Bischoff landed him for proper value – the #13 RB based on salary, making him a solid pick with upside to start every week for his team.

Worst Pick:

Teddy Bridgewater - $7.  With Aaron Rodgers ($24) and Andrew Luck ($31) off the board, Bridgewater was offered up to get someone to overpay for him. Bischoff was that guy. He landed Drew Brees ($15) and Peyton Manning ($12) a few minutes later, further proving that Bridgewater was a bad investment at $7.

Evaluation:

ischoff had a somewhat unspectacular draft. Calvin Johnson ($44) is a solid WR to build around in a PPR league and Spiller is a RB2 with good upside. As mentioned earlier, Manning and Brees make up for the reach that Bischoff had on Bridgewater and give Bischoff the deepest QB corps in the draft. With 2 DEF, 2 PK and 2 TE, Bischoff has reasonable balance at every position. The problem is that the RB and WR stable look very thin after the top players, and Bischoff is going to need someone to break out this season if he’s going to be competitive.

Dunbar, Lance DAL RB $2.00
Green-Beckham, Dorial TEN WR $2.00
Colts, Indianapolis IND Def $1.00
Donnell, Larry NYG TE $1.00
Jennings, Greg MIA WR $1.00
Riddick, Theo DET RB $1.00
Ridley, Stevan NYJ RB $1.00
Robinson, Khiry NOS RB $1.00
Suisham, Shaun PIT PK $1.00

Overall Strategy:

Avoid the feeding frenzy at the start of the draft. Heavy on the RB picks with minimal expense at QB, PK and DEF position.

Best Pick:

Julio Jones - $41. Bloom waited 24 picks before landing his first pick, but it was a good one in Jones. With Roddy White taking a step back as his career winds down, Jones is in position to really put up some impressive numbers this season.  He wasn’t a value pick with a $41 price tag, but Jones is a guy that you can build your team around in a PPR league.

Worst Pick:

Adrian Peterson - $47. Peterson was the 16th RB put up for auction, but Bloom was waiting for him. However, Bloom got into a little bit of a bidding war and by the time it was finished, Peterson was tied with Antonio Brown for the most expensive player in the draft. Peterson is going to be the bulk of the Minnesota offense this season, so a high pricetag is warranted. But sinking that kind of money into a guy that hasn’t played in a year is a big risk with 25% of your team salary cap.

Evaluation:

In a PPR league, start 3 WR league, Bloom bucked the trend and only drafted five wide receivers. With two of them off on week 5 and two of them off on week 10, Bloom is paper thin at the WR position. His RB group is deep, but full of question marks, including his top two guys Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore ($25).  To be successful this season, Bloom’s going to need a lot of things to fall his way and he’s going to have to cut some of his RBs once their situations are resolved.
