Eagles Sign Jason Peters - What It Means For The Offense

Analysis and notes on guard Jason Peters' return to Philadelphia.

In the wake of guard Brandon Brooks ' lower leg injury, the Eagles bolstered their offensive line and re-signed former tackle Jason Peters to a one-year contract this week. Signing Peters -- and moving him to guard to replace the injured Brooks -- is obviously good news for their offensive line grade. Philadelphia goes from seventh without Peters to fourth with him, and the border for Elite Top-Tier criteria is Top 5. Here are our latest rankings for the offensive lines:

Prior to Peters' signing, Matt Pryor was the presumptive starter and he graded as a 2.75 or C+. Peters grades as a 3.25 between B and B+ using the academic scale of measurement. This is a normal grade for a former Pro Bowler in decline but it could be a conservative grade for Peters.

Despite his age (38) and injury history (too numerous to list), Peters has always been a rare athlete. At 6'4" he has always been slightly undersized for tackle and made up for it with wingspan. Peters is a better pass protector than run blocker, but he can dominate for moments in both phases. Peters as a pulling guard could be extremely effective, as he was often used as a tackle in space on screen plays. The offensive system favors hybrid zone concepts and Peters' ability to get to the second level and operate in space is an asset in such a system.

Peters could be a 3.5 (B+) or higher as he rounds into form at right guard. He has no experience playing inside but the assignment should be a breeze compared to his job as a left tackle.

Matt Pryor carried a 3 cohesion score with the team while Peters, who started for the same team at a different position, carries a 4 cohesion score.

While not as dominant as Brooks, Peters is an upgrade at right guard over Pryor and the rookies. In addition, he is also a left tackle backup plan, should second-year player Andre Dillard not work out at the spot. With the uncertainty of this year, it is tough to get young guys like Pryor, Jack Driscoll, and Prince Tega Wanogho ready without having them in the program, in person. Side note, Brandon Brooks will have to play for 8 more seasons to match Jason Peters' career length.

Overall, this Eagles' line upgrades from Top-Tier to Elite Top-Tier with this news, slightly below where they were with Brooks healthy.
