***The peace and quiet of the Week 1 practice participation report didn't last long. Antonio Brown is unlikely to play after an incident with general manager Mike Mayock. Julio Jones hinted he wouldn't play without a contract extension and told reporters he was limited in practice with soreness. And Odell Beckham revealed he was less than 100% with nagging hip soreness.
While Jones is likely to play and shouldn't be limited by his soreness, Beckham's interview raised concern. After telling reporters his hip condition was keeping him from going "full speed" and saying his "alignment was off," Beckham said he was confident in his ability to play effectively. The Browns and Beckham have not discussed the injury specifically. Beckham suggested there was no single injury event, noting only that he was "feeling weird" after practice earlier in the offseason and chose not to risk aggravation during training camp.
Hip injuries -- regardless of the type of condition -- can be difficult for wide receivers. That's not to say Beckham cannot be effective. Many receivers with hip impingement symptoms or bursitis or hip pointers have been statistically productive. But there is a risk of season-long limitation in practices, missed snaps and series, or worse. For now, expect Beckham to play in Week 1. If he looks more limited than his individual drills this summer suggested, it's time to raise our level of concern.
***As hoped last night, Stefon Diggs increased his practice participation today and looks on track to play.
***Alshon Jeffery was added to the Thursday practice report as limited with a biceps injury. He told reporters he was "fine" and can be expected to play.
Wednesday MEDIA UPDATES
***After some measure of uncertainty surrounding the many veterans who missed practice with nagging injury during the preseason, NFL teams are finally showing the first indication of whether these players are ready to practice. As is often the case, nearly all of these players practiced fully and were not listed on the Wednesday practice report. That includes Cam Newton (foot), Mike Evans (quad), Todd Gurley (knee), Odell Beckham (hip), Julio Jones (foot), Keenan Allen (ankle), George Kittle (calf), Sony Michel (knee), Derrick Henry (calf), Kenyan Drake (foot), and Aaron Rodgers (back).
***Amari Cooper fully practiced as expected. He has consistently told reporters his plantar fascia irritation is minor and does not expect it to limit him during games. He's on track for a full Week 1 workload.
***Stefon Diggs did not practice with a hamstring injury. He was seen doing individual drills off to the side of the practice field and was not asked about the injury during his pre-practice press session. There was no indication his injury occurred during practice, so it's likely we'll see Diggs increase his participation and prepare to play.
***There's not much information on Robby Anderson's calf strain but local observers expect him to play after Wednesday's limited practice.
***I'll continue to watch practice participation and team comments on Dante Pettis (groin) and DK Metcalf (knee) but both are expected to play.
***Tyron Smith (back) and Zack Martin (back) are both likely to play for Dallas. Mike Iupati (foot) and Cordy Glenn (concussion) are the key offensive linemen most in danger of missing Week 1.
***Nick Bosa looks likely to play in a limited role this week. Lavonte David and Jarrad Davis both managed limited practices on Wednesday with David closer to playing an every-down role this week.
THURSDAY NIGHT INJURY EXPECTATIONS
Here are the key offensive players listed on the practice participation or game status report for Thursday Night Football:
Green Bay at Chicago
***The Packers listed 20 players on their injury report this week. Nearly every listed player returned to full participation by Wednesday morning. Linebacker Oren Burks (pectoral) has been declared out. Rookie tight end Jace Sternberger was moved to injured reserve with a high ankle sprain. Every other contributing player -- including preseason injury watch list players Aaron Rodgers (back), Aaron Jones (hamstring), and Kevin King (hamstring) -- are ready to play.
***Chicago is also healthy entering Thursday night's game. Only Trey Burton, who continues to recover from an offseason core abdominal muscle repair, is questionable. Limited all week in practice, Matt Nagy has called Burton a game-time decision. Burton has not managed a full practice in weeks and is likely to the doubtful side of the questionable listing. If Burton is active, he's unlikely to play a full complement of snaps.
EARly week PRACTICE PARTICIPATION & EARLY EXPECTATIONS
The Wednesday and Thursday practice participation reports are our first chance to see which players each NFL team are limiting in practice after the previous week's games. Players limited in mid-week practice aren't necessarily in danger of missing that week's game. But they all need to be watched closely.
