Beyond the Stats Week 9

Each week I uncover some interesting stats, tidbits and information that you may not know.

DID YOU KNOW?

Can't reach pay dirt - Marcus Mariota has 1 completion in 5 attempts inside the 10 yard line this season. Jameis Winston has 2 completions in 8 attempts. In Winston's defense, both completions were touchdowns.

Pay dirt, no problem - Deshaun Watson is 10-for-12 inside the 10 yard line, connecting on all 10 for touchdowns.

Career year! - Alex Smith has 16 touchdown passes on pace for 32. Last season he had 15 touchdowns and 8 interceptions and his career average is 18.5 touchdown passes per year.  His career high is 23 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in 2013, when he finished 15th among fantasy quarterbacks, the highest of his career.

Both sides of the interception spectrum - Oakland is the only team to not have an interception on defense. Surprisingly, Baltimore leads all teams with 12 interceptions on defense.

Better after crossing midfield - Packers running back Aaron Jones is averaging 4.9 yards per carry on the Packer side of the 50 yard line. His yards per carry jumps to 6.5 YPC after crossing midfield. Alvin Kamara is in the same boat. 5.0 before midfield, 6.1 after crossing midfield.

Notable backs with poor YPC Avg after they cross the 50 include

Receiver Rushing Stats

  • Most rushing yards: LA Rams 142 (Tavon Austin has 130 yards on his own)
  • Most rushes by WR/TE: LA Rams 26 (Austin has 24). Next closest 15 by Kansas City
  • Highest yards per rush for WR/TE (min 3 rushes): Carolina at 15.5 yards per carry Curtis Samuel averages 16.6 on his own - the highest average of any WR/TE with minimum of 3 carries.
  • Most rushing touchdowns for WR/TE: Oakland with 2

A gift to opposing defensive coordinators - Emmanuel Sanders has 25 receptions in five games (5 per game), but only 4 receptions came on third or fourth down. Same goes for Paul Richardson Jr. In 22 receptions, only two came on third or fourth down.

In the clutch - Keenan Allen has 20 of his 40 receptions on third or fourth down. 17 of those catches went for a first down.

Running Back efficency - 67 running backs have at least 25 carries. Of those 67 players only 7 average at least 5.0 yards per carry. (Alex Collins, Alvin Kamara, Aaron Jones, Tevin Coleman, Orleans Darkwa, Kareem Hunt, Duke Johnson Jr)

Of those 7...

1 have over 100 carries - Kareem Hunt
3 have more than 2 rushing touchdowns - Kareem Hunt (4) and Aaron Jones (3)
1 has not scored a rushing touchdown - Alex Collins
