Some changes for 2020

We've made some changes to the rules for this year's contest, the most important of which is this:

The terms of our money back guarantee are spelled out on this page. If irregularities in the NFL season cause credits of any amount to be offered to subscribers in accordance with the money back guarantee, then no prizes of any kind will be awarded for this contest. This rule supersedes all other contest rules.

The other major change from previous years is this: this year's contest will be two weeks shorter. The survivor rounds are weeks 1--11, and the three-week final round will take place in weeks 12--14.

There is a bunch more 2020-specific fine print in a big red box at the bottom of the page. We've done our best to account for uncertainty while trying to maintain the traditional rules of the contest to the greatest extent possible. Please read it carefully before finalizing your entry.

As a subscriber to Footballguys.com, you are elgible to enter this contest one time.

Contest Rules

There will be no draft. A subscriber simply chooses a team from the pre-determined values. Roster selection can be changed until the deadline passes (11:59pm (ET) Wednesday, September 9th) at which point it will be frozen. No roster moves are permitted once the contest starts.

Each team will select at least 18 and no more than 30 players, consisting of quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, kickers and defenses. Each team must select at least 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 PK and 1 Def/ST.

Each selection has a different cap value, but all teams must remain at or under the $250 cap. Note: Even though the software should show you if you are within the cap, it is your responsibility to ensure you have a team that is valued at $250 or less. Teams that have spent more than the $250 will be disqualified in week 1.

Players not listed on the entry form are not available.

Each submission is tied in with your login so you can edit and tweak all the way until 11:59pm ET September 9th. Your last submit will be your final roster.

There are multiple Williams, Jones, Brown's, etc in the league. Each player is identified by name, position and team on the entry form. Absolutely no consideration can be given after the fact to mistakes caused by name confusion.

Each week, your top QB, top 2 RBs, top 2 WRs, top TE, top 2 flex (either RB, WR or TE), top PK and top Def/ST will count towards your weekly total. You do not have to select who will play. You will receive the maximum score based on your roster.

Contest will be Survivor style through week 11. By survivor style, we mean that only the high scores for JUST THAT WEEK advance to the next round. Scores reset each week.

The weekly cutoffs are as follows:

Week 1 trim to 13,500 teams (all advance if we have fewer entries)
Week 2 trim to 10,000 teams
Week 3 trim to 6,500 teams
Week 4 trim to 4,500 teams
Week 5 trim to 3,200 teams
Week 6 trim to 2,200 teams
Week 7 trim to 1,500 teams
Week 8 trim to 1,100 teams
Week 9 trim to 750 teams
Week 10 trim to 500 teams
Week 11 trim to 250 teams

Scoring

Player Scoring for QB, RB, WR, TE

  • Passing TDs = 6 points
  • Interceptions Thrown = -1 points
  • Rushing TD = 6 points
  • Receiving TD = 6 points
  • Passing Yardage = .05 points per yard
  • Rushing Yardage = .10 points per yard
  • Receiving Yardage = .10 points per yard
  • Receptions for RB = 0.5 points
  • Receptions for WR = 1.0 points
  • Receptions for TE = 1.5 points

In the event of a discrepancy among stat providers on any of the above statistics for any of the above positions, the nfl.com player page game logs will be deemed to be official. For players listed on the contest form as QB, RB, WR, or TE, no points will be awarded for any stats not listed above (e.g. return TDs, fumble recovery TDs, receptions for QB, two-point conversions, etc.).

Kicker Scoring (PK)

  • Made FG = 3 points for FGs 30 yards and lower plus 0.1 points for every yard over 30.
    • Example: a 22-yard FG would be worth 3 points
    • Example: a 29-yard FG would be worth 3 points
    • Example: a 31-yard FG would be worth 3.1 points
    • Example: a 45-yard FG would be worth 4.5 points
  • PAT Made = 1 point
For players listed as PK on the contest form, no points will be awarded for anything other than field goals and PAT. In the event of a discprepancy among stat providers on field goal length, the "Scoring Summary" section of the nfl.com boxscore is deemed to be official. The nfl.com player page game log will be the official source for PAT.

Def/ST Scoring (Def/ST)

  • Sack = 1 point
  • Turnover by the opposing team = 2 points
  • Defensive/ST TD = 6 points

For the purposes of clarity, we declare a Defensive/ST TD to be any TD that is not a rushing or a passing TD (This will very occasionally INCLUDE a fumble recovery TD by an offensive player, and it might theoretically EXCLUDE a passing or rushing TD that happens on a special teams play. So be it.) A Turnover is defined to be a fumble lost or an interception. For all of the above stats, we will refer to the nfl.com boxscore for the game (the team stats section). For entities listed on the contest form as Defenses, no points will be awarded for any stats other than those listed above.

All scoring is determined final at 11:59pm ET on the day AFTER the last game day of the week (in a typical week, this would be Tuesday). Users have until 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on the following day (e.g. Wednesday in a typical week) to report possible scoring errors or discrepancies for that week's games. All errors reported via the FBG help desk before that time will be corrected as soon as possible. Any error not reported before the deadline specified above (including, but not limited to, errors retroactively introduced by official league stat changes) will stand as posted.

Some words about the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 season

Our primary goal is to create a set of rules that is completely unambiguous, so that no mid-season rule interpretations need to be made regardless of how weird the NFL schedule might get. Our secondary goal is to retain the traditional format of this contest to the greatest extent possible. We hope these two goals don't conflict. If they do, we will be bummed, but we will honor the rules as written here.

These rules might change between their initial posting and the entry deadline. The rules posted at the time of the entry deadline will supersede any prior versions. You should review these rules as the entry deadline approaches before you submit your entry or make any final edits to it.

For the purposes of this contest, subject to the important ensuing clarifications, we define the Weeks as follows:

  • Week 1: all games whose kickoff occurs between September 10, 2020 and September 15, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 2: all games whose kickoff occurs between September 16, 2020 and September 22, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 3: all games whose kickoff occurs between September 23, 2020 and September 29, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 4: all games whose kickoff occurs between September 30, 2020 and October 6, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 5: all games whose kickoff occurs between October 7, 2020 and October 13, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 6: all games whose kickoff occurs between October 14, 2020 and October 20, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 7: all games whose kickoff occurs between October 21, 2020 and October 27, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 8: all games whose kickoff occurs between October 28, 2020 and November 3, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 9: all games whose kickoff occurs between November 4, 2020 and November 10, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 10: all games whose kickoff occurs between November 11, 2020 and November 17, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 11: all games whose kickoff occurs between November 18, 2020 and November 24, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 12: all games whose kickoff occurs between November 25, 2020 and December 1, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 13: all games whose kickoff occurs between December 2, 2020 and December 8, 2020 (inclusive)
  • Week 14: all games whose kickoff occurs between December 9, 2020 and December 15, 2020 (inclusive)

In case games get moved to the other side of the international or interstellar date line, we specify that the date of a game will refer to the local time in the location where the game occurred. In the event that a game occurs outside the traditionally-defined spacetime continuum, it will be considered a Week i game.

If ZERO games are played during one of the Weeks specified above, then that Week is ignored and all the future Week designations shift forward in time. For example, if all games are played as scheduled on Weeks 1, 2, 3, but ZERO games are played on the originally-defined Week 4 (between Sept 30 and Oct 6 inclusive), then Oct 7--13 becomes Week 4, Oct 14--20 becomes Week 5, and so on. In this scenario, Week 14 would be Dec 16 -- 22 (inclusive). Seven-day blocks starting on Wednesday and ending on Tuesday will be added to the end of the schedule as needed. The last potential Week will be June 23--29, 2021. No games played after June 29, 2021 will count toward the scoring of this contest.

If AT LEAST ONE, BUT FEWER THAN NINE, games are played during a given Week, then the week counts (i.e. we will progress to the next week), but NO PARTICIPANTS WILL BE CUT FROM THE CONTEST that week. For example, suppose all games are played as scheduled in Weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4, and then only six games get played in Week 5. In this case, no teams will be cut in week 5. But the following Week will be Week 6 and the Week 6 cut line will be 2200 as originally planned.

If NINE OR MORE games are played during a given Week, then the Week will be scored and the posted cut line will be observed. If it happens that a few games are not played during a given Week, we will be filled with every bit as much frustration as you, the contest participant. But we will score that Week according to the letter of the law.

Note that it is possible that "Week 7" of the contest might not correspond to what the NFL, or the general football-watching community, refers to as "week 7." All mentions of the word "Week" in this document refer to the specific Weeks defined in this red box.

It is unlikely but possible that a player might play more than one game in a given Week. ALL stats accrued by a player during a given week will count toward his score for that Week.

Only regular season NFL games will count. Postseason games will not count regardless of when they get played. A game is considered a regular season game if and only if the game's result (win/loss/tie) is reflected in the official league standings.

Prizes will be awarded as follows:

  • If at least 12 Weeks are played, the prize pool will be allocated as it has been in previous years (outlined below). The contest participants who were not previously eliminated will be ordered, from highest to lowest, by the sum of their scores for weeks 12, 13, and 14.
