Browns Rushing offense

Neutral matchup vs. the Jets defense.

The Browns were forced to scramble alongside the offensive line as Greg Robinson was ejected and an injury to his backup Kendall Lamm forced Chris Hubbard to move from right tackle to left tackle, and Justin McCray who had been with the team for just a week after being acquired by Green Bay to slide to right tackle. Even with the struggles, Nick Chubb was able to have a solid day rushing for 75 yards on 17 carries and was one of the lone bright spots for this Browns team in a blow-out disappointing loss. Chubb continues to be electric with the ball consistently picking up solid gains. The problem for the Browns last week was penalties that killed a lot of their drives as they second-most penalties in franchise history with 18 penalties including six personal fouls and four holding penalties. This is a unit that still has a lot of promise and Chubb should continue to be productive each week.

The Jets run defense was one that was up and down in this game. They did a tremendous job shutting down veteran Frank Gore holding him to just 20 yards on 11 carries but struggled with the change of pace speed in Devin Singletary allowing 70 yards on just 4 carries and all 4 of those carries went for 12 yards or more. A big part of Singletary’s production was the injuries that were suffered during this game primarily to linebacker and signal-caller C.J. Mosley who played a major role in shutting down the Bills in the first half. If he is unable to go, which it looks likely, this is a defense that will look at Harvey Langi as his replacement who has just one career tackle and did not have a tackle in 25 snaps last week. Another injury that the Jets are dealing with is third-overall pick defensive tackle Quinnen Williams who is dealing with an ankle injury. While Williams is still acclimating himself to the NFL, he did see 35% of the snaps and is a depth player as he learns behind veteran run-stuffer Steve McClendon. This defense completely depends on the health of Mosley as without him it is a unit that is going to put a significant amount of pressure on elite safety Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye defending the run which is never a great thing to rely on your safeties as a primary defense against the run.

Browns Passing offense

Good matchup vs. the Jets defense.

The Browns came out looking great on the first drive of the game as they quickly moved the ball down the field for a touchdown. Unfortunately, it was tough sledding for the remainder of the game as penalties, sacks, and forced turnovers late in the game led to a rough start for the Browns who have such high expectations. The offensive line remains the biggest issue in Cleveland as Baker Mayfield was under duress for most of the game and was sacked five times along with the teams 18 penalties. The team as a whole lacked discipline including Mayfield who forced three interceptions in a matter of four drives as he desperately tried to bring the team back. This unit is still incredibly talented and part of the offensive line issues may be resolved with Greg Robinson not being suspended after he was ejected last game.

The Jets came out and started the game strong last week against the Bills with a shutout in the first half, but the secondary fell apart in the second half as Josh Allen and the Bills led a comeback through the air allowing 254 yards and a touchdown. The Bills took advantage of the Jets by utilizing the speed of John Brown and taking advantage of both Trumaine Johnson and Darryl Roberts who struggled in this game. Johnson looked less than 100% as he was dealing with a hamstring issue for much of camp. The Jets have one of the best safety groups in the NFL in Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, but they need their corners to step up and if Johnson continues to be less than 100%, it could lead to a long day against Cleveland. The key to this matchup will be the pass rush as if the Browns offensive line can keep Leonard Williams away from Baker Mayfield, this Browns team should be able to have success through the air.

Jets Rushing offense

Tough matchup vs. the Browns defense.

Le’Veon Bell’s first game was one that left some things to be desired as a running back. Bell averaged just 3.5 yards per carry and found little running room for most of the game as it appears that Bell and his new offensive line will take some time to get used to the timing that Bell relies on to hit the open holes. This is still a very talented unit led by former Pro Bowlers on the interior in Ryan Kalil and Kelechi Osemele. This was the first time the starting unit had ever played together due to injuries in the preseason and Kalil took the blame for this as he said their communication needs to improve and that falls on him as the center. He vowed to be more commanding to the offensive line as the team looks to continue to work together to have consistency in the rushing attack.

The Browns run defense underwhelmed after coming into the season with high expectations. Derrick Henry ran for 84 yards and a touchdown in this game on 19 carries (4.4 YPC). This is a unit that came into the season with some of the biggest expectations in the NFL with the offseason acquisitions of Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson to pair with Larry Ogunjobi and Myles Garrett. Consistency was the key for the Browns as they did hold 11 of the 28 rush attempts to 2 yards or fewer, but there was very little middle ground as the Titans either ran for 7 or more yards or ran for nothing. Linebackers Joe Schobert and Christian Kirksey have a lot of pressure on them as the Browns primarily played in the Nickel defense as their base defense. This is still an incredibly talented group but will need to improve their play going up against Le’Veon Bell.

Jets Passing offense

Tough matchup vs. the Browns defense.

Sam Darnold struggled this week which led to coach Adam Gase calling out both Darnold and Robby Anderson for their performances this past week. The Jets did have to make some personnel moves as they lost Quincy Enunwa for the season with a neck injury which led them to trade for Demaryius Thomas who will provide depth behind Robby Anderson and Jamison Crowder. Crowder was one of the bright spots in this offense as he caught 14 passes for the Jets and was targeted 17 times. This passing offense appears to be going through Crowder and Le’Veon Bell who caught six passes with the occasional deep shot to Anderson.

The Browns secondary was great for the entire game this past week except for three plays. The first being a screen pass to Derrick Henry that he took for 75 yards, and then poor tackling on an in route from A.J. Brown who beat Terrance Mitchell stiff-armed him, and then stiff-armed safety Damarious Randall for a 51 yard gain. This is sort of expected from a group that is incredibly young as their two starting cornerbacks are 22 years old in Denzel Ward and 21 years old in Greedy Williams. Williams in his first start drew high praise from the coaching staff after the game and Ward who was a Pro Bowler last season. The vaunted pass rush led by Myles Garrett and Olivier Vernon lived up to the hype in this game as they sacked Marcus Mariota four times with Garrett having two of those four sacks. This continues to be a unit that will likely give up big plays from time to time but will be incredibly difficult to move the ball consistently against.
