Bills Rushing offense

Tough matchup vs. the Steelers defense.

Promising rookie runner Devin Singletary returned fully from injury in Week 8, and heís been Buffaloís bell cow ever since. Over those 7 games heís seen 69% of Bills snaps in the backfield and taken on 60% of running back attempts. And heís been plenty efficient in the process, averaging 5.0 yards per carry over that span and 5.6 on the season. The Bills run the ball with solid volume, and while their run/pass ratio is skewed a bit by quarterback Josh Allenís scrambling, thereís more than enough opportunity here to support a fantasy RB2. Singletary has cleared 60 yards in 4 straight games, and heís topped 85 three times as the lead dog. Frank Gore (just 13 carries over the past 2 weeks) is little more than a strict backup at this point; Singletaryís main competition for fantasy value is the fearless, instinctive Allen, who takes on seven carries a game himself and most of the short-yardage work. Singletary has only taken two goal-line rushes all year, which does keep his ceiling fairly modest. But his floor at least looks secure, even in a tough matchup against the Steelers, who can be beaten by quick-cutting runners.

The Steelers continue to clamp down - for the most part - on opposing run games. Only 4 teams have given up fewer yards per attempt, and none have allowed fewer touchdowns. There have been a few minor hiccups along the way, as the Steelers have long struggled with quick-footed backs capable of exploding through a hole. Thatís been exploited in recent matchups by Marlon Mack (21 carries for 89 yards), Todd Gurley (12 for 73), Joe Mixon (18 for 79), and Kareem Hunt (7 for 46). Still, on the whole, this isnít an attractive fantasy matchup to test. There are issues at linebacker, where Mark Barron remains a huge liability and rookie Devin Bush is taking baby steps forward. But the Pittsburgh line controls the point of attack so consistently that theyíre given plenty of leeway in pursuit, and there are supporting playmakers all over this unit.

Bills Passing offense

Tough matchup vs. the Steelers defense.

Josh Allen certainly has his warts, but heís developed into a competent starter on a likely playoff team here in Year 2. Allen remains a work in progress as a decision-maker, but his mobility and instinctive style keep plays alive, and his powerful delivery is deadly when he allows himself to come set. Heís certainly taken a statistical leap from his dismal rookie year, though heís still no oneís idea of a fantasy starter on his arm alone. Allen sits 25th among 33 qualifiers in yards per attempt, and 26th with just 211 per game. With middling volume and not much downfield weaponry, heís only cleared 250 in 4 of his 13 games. Top receiver John Brown has tapered off majorly of late, with just 91 yards over the past 3 weeks. Heís faced some tough matchups, to be fair, but Allen simply isnít finding him consistently downfield right now. When the two click, both are fantasy starters - they connected for 50+ yards in each of their first 10 games together. But lately, Allen is leaning more conservatively on slot man Cole Beasley and his running backs, who donít produce nearly as much with his targets. Itís not a recipe for big air numbers, so those playing Allen will, as always, pray for big rushing production on the side.

The Steelers continue to post top-tier numbers against the pass, giving up just 5.6 yards per dropback (fourth in football) and 210 a game (fifth). No opponent has reached 250 yards since Week 6, when Philip Rivers padded his numbers in a second half full of garbage time. That kind of consistency deserves a ton of credit, even if it must be noted that theyíve faced a wildly favorable slate of quarterbacking. They havenít played a top-10 quarterback by yards per attempt since Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 3. Still, itís certainly been impressive to see them clamp down so tightly on opposing wideouts. Only two receivers have notched 100 yards in this matchup: Tyler Boyd (101) and Hunter Henry (100). In Steven Nelson, Joe Haden, and Mike Hilton, the Steelers boast arguably the leagueís most underrated cornerback trio. And behind them, new free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has proven his worth - and then some - as an All-Pro caliber cover man and playmaker down the field. If thereís a weakness here, itís underneath, where the linebackers remain a liability against slot men and tight ends. If the Billsí thin receiving corps is going to find success here Sunday, it will likely work somewhat through Cole Beasleyís quick, underneath game.

Steelers Rushing offense

Good matchup vs. the Bills defense.

James Conner looks ready to return Sunday from his shoulder injury, and heíll immediately slot in ahead of Benny Snell as the Steelersí bell cow runner. Still, even over a full, healthy game, itís hard to project Conner to much efficiency. Heís only topped 50 yards twice over his 7 full games, averaging an anemic 3.8 per rush. In fact, aside from his Week 8 eruption against the lowly Dolphins, his mark sits at just 3.1. And thereís no guarantee heíll even finish Week 15 on the field after aggravating the injury in mid-Week 11. The Steelers boast one of footballís strongest front lines, headed by a pair of dominant interior blockers in Maurkice Pouncey and David DeCastro. But Conner and backup Snell (just 4.0 himself) are generally slow-footed plodders, and neither has picked up more than whatís been blocked. Itís puzzling as to why the Steelers seem to have given up on Jaylen Samuels as more than a complementary runner. With just 21 carries over the past 4 weeks, he looks locked into a third-down role. The team may need his dynamism, though, if theyíre going to generate any difference-making runs Sunday.

The Bills defense has earned a strong reputation here in 2019, but itís been built almost entirely against the pass. The run defense has been fairly beatable for much of the season, sitting 21st league-wide on a per-carry basis. To their credit, they do stand as the only Ravens opponent since Week 3 to hold Lamar Jackson under 60 yards (40 on 11 attempts last week). There are definitely impact players in this unit, such as first-round rookie tackle Ed Oliver, who has made a number of splash plays in the backfield over the past month. But overall, itís a relatively soft group, one thatís been picked through efficiently by speedsters (Phillip Lindsay, Adrian Peterson) and power backs (Ezekiel Elliott, Nick Chubb, Jordan Howard) alike. The linebackers arenít particularly strong in gap discipline and pursuit, so safeties Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde are relied upon heavily. Theyíre perfectly capable, but itís never a good sign when the safeties are the unitís best run-stoppers. The Steelers boast a strong front line, with a pair of pulling technicians in Maurkice Pouncey and David DeCastro. That could be deadly for a Bills defense that struggles to contain the run on the second level.

Steelers Passing offense

Bad matchup vs. the Bills defense.

At the moment, Devlin Hodges is not being cast as a superhero. Heís throwing just 20 passes a game in the Steelersí banged-up, stripped-down offense, averaging just 165 yards and 1 touchdown. But heís also been much steadier than Mason Rudolph, leading and throwing with poise and accuracy in a lessened role. Hodges has completed 71% of his passes, and his ability to keep plays alive and convert has made for a huge improvement. Unfortunately, the lack of volume continues to hamper his receiversí value. James Washington has thrived of late, with 69+ yards in 4 of his last 6 games. His Week 14 line (4 for 33) could have been much bigger had he not drawn a pair of pass interference flags deep down the field. Washingtonís value will take a hit if JuJu Smith-Schuster can return this week, but perhaps not much of one. His connection with Hodges is impressive, and itís likely Smith-Schusterís return would add some target opportunity by itself. It would, however, push Diontae Johnsonís role (6 for 60 and a touchdown last week) into uncertainty. This attack boasts plenty of dynamism, but doesnít offer the volume to support much fantasy value - nor the clarity to know where it will come from on a given week.

The Buffalo pass defense remains a major team strength; in fact, itís probably been the catalyst to this improbable 9-4 record. This has been a near-lockdown unit, sitting third in net yardage allowed per game and per attempt. Theyíve allowed only 3 opposing passers to top 250 yards, and 2 of them needed extensive garbage time to do it. Itís no surprise theyíre so stingy against No. 1 wideouts with shutdown cornerback TreíDavious White on board. White is enjoying another All-Pro caliber season, routinely limiting the opponentís top target. Heís helped stifle downfield playmakers Marquise Brown, Courtland Sutton, and Terry McLaurin (a combined 64 yards on 8 receptions) in recent matchups. White gets great support from the elite safety duo of Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde, which keeps the deep game mostly under wraps. The Steelers will likely keep the offense as close to Devlin Hodgesí vest as possible, getting by on quick, underneath throws short of the secondary. Whatever they do, itís hard to project them to much dynamism in this grueling matchup.
