Buccaneers Rushing offense

Good matchup vs. the Bengals defense.

For a number of reasons, the Tampa Bay running game simply canít get off the ground. Up front, the line is mediocre at best, currently sitting 22nd in Matt Bitontiís rankings. But the real problem is in the backfield, where thereís strikingly little talent. Peyton Barber simply looks like a reserve option as he lacks athleticism and is too small for a big-back role. Through 6 games heís producing just 3.51 yards a carry, and even as the featured back heís landed south of 34 yards 4 times. Barber has missed practice so far this week and is highly questionable this week. Rookie Ronald Jones (2.65) has somehow been even less effective, and itís not yet apparent what the Buccaneers saw to trigger their draft trade-up. Shaky in both aspects of the offense, Jones could probably use the seasoning, but simply doesnít give the Buccaneers their best chance to win at the moment. Itís safe to expect more low-impact plodding from Barber until the light switches on.

The Bengalsí defensive collapse hasnít stopped in its barely-there secondary. The run unit has also been shredded all season, giving up a whopping 5.07 yards per rush to opposing backs. The last 2 weeks have been especially bad, with James Conner, Kareem Hunt, and Spencer Ware combining for 256 yards on their 42 attempts (6.10 per). Thatís objectively awful, and it wonít get any better if Vontaze Burfict loses time to his hip injury. Burfict represents virtually all of the playmaking ability on the second level; without his tenacious pursuit, the lanes up front become pathways to daylight. If thereís a run defense that Peyton Barber can slip past, or underwhelming rookie Ronald Jones can cut his teeth on, itís this porous unit.

Buccaneers Passing offense

Great matchup vs. the Bengals defense.

The Tampa Bay pass game is fantasy dynamite, and arguably the best kind. Itís inflated wildly by volume, and capable of big numbers in any game script. Thereís not a ton of efficiency on display: over 2.5 games back, Jameis Winston sits just 25th in the league in adjusted net yards per attempt (factoring in yards, touchdowns, sacks, and interceptions). Heís thrown 6 picks, continuing to alternate splash plays with back-breaking giveaways. A downfield attacker at heart, Winston will probably never stop testing tight coverage, which is fine. But heís often erratic with his powerful arm, and he makes more than his share of Jay Cutler-esque awful decisions. At least fantasy players can bask in the breakneck nature of this attack. Often trailing (and unwilling to run the ball much anyway), the Buccaneers are averaging an obscene 377 passing yards and 2.8 touchdowns a game. Loaded with downfield mismatches Ė and enjoying a blistering start from 31-year-old DeSean Jackson Ė this group can produce on a league-best level regardless of a gameís flow.

Through 7 weeks of football, few pass defenses have proven leakier than Cincinnatiís. Theyíve showed well in matchups against Cam Newton and Ryan Tannehill, but the other 5 opposing passers have averaged a stunning 368 yards, with 12 combined touchdowns. Thereís a dynamic pass rush in place, routinely generating pressure both from the edges and the interior. But the coverage units have been bad enough to neutralize that. Cornerbacks William Jackson and Dre Kirkpatrick are struggling mightily after promising starts to the year; as a result, 8 different wideouts have produced 67 yards or more in this matchup. Rookie safety Jessie Bates has impressed, but there are still far too many big plays given up down the seams. Poor tackling in the open field hasnít helped, resulting in tons of yardage after catches. This is one of fantasyís juicier matchups to target, and Jameis Winston should be afforded plenty of opportunities to win down the field.

Bengals Rushing offense

Neutral matchup vs. the Buccaneers defense.

Joe Mixon continues to shine, even if heís hovering a bit under the radar. Without a 100-yard game to his credit this season, Mixon isnít dazzling with big fantasy totals. But heís running great and consistently maximizing his opportunities. After an inefficient rookie year (3.52 yards per rush), Mixon is generating 4.60 as a sophomore, and heís already produced more 80-yard finishes this season (3 of his 5 games). Exceptionally fast and nimble for his size (an elite 118.40 speed score at his combine), heís essentially what the Bengals tried to manufacture a few years ago by pairing Jeremy Hill with Giovani Bernard. The Bengalsí isnít a high-volume offense, and game flow will always tell the tale on Mixonís fantasy week. But itís clear heís dynamic enough to spin big workloads into gold, even behind a shaky offensive line.

The Tampa Bay run defense has stabilized itself nicely after a nightmarish 2017. The pass unit remains a disaster, but up front, the teamís hefty offseason investments are paying dividends. Theyíve stifled most opposing runners, including Alvin Kamara (8 for 29), James Conner (15 for 61), and Tevin Coleman (10 for 35). Still, theyíre moving forward without two lynchpins: Gerald McCoy, who looks doubtful for Week 8, and linebacker Kwon Alexander, who was lost Sunday to an ACL tear. Alexander is a solid defender and team leaderwill be missed in the middle. And McCoy remains an absolute terror against the run, commanding double teams and often blowing up plays at the line anyway. Itís a shame to see the groupís turnaround stunted, but itís hard to be bullish with those key pieces missing. This unit could again slip toward the bottom of the league, if only for the short term.

Bengals Passing offense

Great matchup vs. the Buccaneers defense.

Last week, Andy Daltonís worst start of 2018 came in his juiciest matchup thus far. Averaging a solid 279 yards a game going in, Dalton managed just 148 Sunday, joining Denverís Case Keenum as the only 2 passers not to feast on the porous Kansas City secondary. Dalton was scattershot throughout the game, making numerous mistakes with the ball and looking generally out of sorts. But Daltonís hot start has earned him the benefit of the doubt for that dud. Heís generally thriving in coordinator Bill Lazorís creative offense, and at least we know his A.J. Green connection isnít suffering. Still a walking mismatch and an elite high-point receiver, Green has averaged a 6-87-0.7 line thus far, falling below 69 yards only once. Tyler Boydís emergence (6-69-0.6) has also been key, providing a second set of reliable hands and some much-needed wiggle out of the slot. This isnít one of the leagueís more explosive offenses, and Daltonís week-to-week floor is concerning. But some of its individual elements are dynamic and productive, and always a threat to erupt in a given matchup.

Itís been awhile since the NFL has seen a pass defense as inept as that of these Buccaneers. The numbers are staggering: 5 of their 6 opponents have thrown for 334-439 yards, and thereís been an 88-yard receiving performance in all six. Itís especially hard to wipe Mitchell Trubiskyís 354-yard, 6-touchdown romp from memory. Soft in coverage and shaky at open-field tackling, theyíre simply being gashed all over the field. Downfield receivers have an easy time strolling through the secondary, which is manned by 35-year-old Brent Grimes and a host of poor cover men. Cornerback M.J. Stewart has been picked on relentlessly, and heís always a matchup to monitor for fantasy purposes. And underneath, running backs both check down and run routes with little resistance Ė 2 have already topped 112 receiving yards. This is an ideal matchup to target in fantasy on any week whatsoever, and a great opportunity for Andy Dalton to snap his short slump. He, the Bengals wideouts, and Joe Mixon all get extraordinary boosts to their outlooks this week. hard to wipe Mitchell Trubiskyís 354-yard, 6-touchdown romp from memory.
