Giants Rushing offense

Good matchup vs. the Cowboys defense.

This is looking like it could be a prototypical Saquon Barkley type game as he broke a 68-yard run, but on his other 17 carries he had just 38 yards and was frequently met behind the line of scrimmage. The real issue for the Giants is that their offensive line continues to be a bottom-tier offensive line even with the addition of Nate Solder this past offseason. Ereck Flowers and Patrick Omaneh continue to be liabilities for this team that in order for Barkley to emerge as what we think he can be, will need to step up and become a cohesive unit. The Giants were facing one of the best defensive lines in football in the Jaguars so there is hope that they will improve based off of their week one performance.

The Cowboys struggled in week one against the Panthers who have one of the worst offensive lines in football as the Panthers ran all over the Cowboys rushing for 147 yards and Christian McCaffrey and C.J. Anderson ran for 85 yards on just 17 carries (5.0 yards per carry). This is a major issue for the Cowboys as while they have elite defensive ends in Taco Charlton and DeMarcus Lawrence, their defensive tackles and linebackers are liabilities. Both Antwaun Woods and Tyrone Crawford will need to improve their play along with all three linebackers. Sean Lee will improve his game as he traditionally does, but the concern is around Jaylon Smith and whoever the third linebacker will be whether it is Damien Wilson or rookie Leighton Vander Esch as both split time and neither were overly effective. This could be a get right game for the Giants as their offensive line is worse than the Panthers, but the Cowboys struggled mightily against a unit that is still below average last week.

Giants Passing offense

Tough matchup vs. the Cowboys defense.

It is tough to get a gauge as far as how the passing game will go for the Giants this season largely because they went up against the top unit in the NFL in the Jaguars last week. All things considered, there is optimism for the Giants this season as Eli Manning hung in there and looked better than what he did in 2017. He completed 62% of his passes and did a good job avoiding sacks as he was sacked just twice in this game. Having a player of Odell Beckham’s caliber makes things easy for just about any quarterback as Beckham saw 15 targets in this game while catching 11 of them for 111 yards.

The Cowboys secondary is still largely unproven after week one as the running game had so much success for the Panthers that the Panthers only attempted to throw the ball 26 times last week. The Cowboys unit is very similar to the one of 2017 where they were 11th in yards allowed and were a very solid unit throughout the season as while they do not have an elite corner, they do not have any liabilities either on this team. Chidobe Awuzie, Byron Jones, and slot corner Anthony Brown are all solid above-average corners and while they may struggle with Odell Beckham as most cornerbacks do, expect this unit to not make Eli Manning’s life easy in week one. The one area that could be exploited is that the Cowboys safeties struggled to shut down Christian McCaffrey as he had 5 receptions for 50 yards. This could be an opportunity for Saquon Barkley to have success this week in the passing game which was something we did not see a lot of in Week 1.

Cowboys Rushing offense

Good matchup vs. the Giants defense.

Ezekiel Elliott disappointed in Week 1 as the team got behind early and Elliott only saw 15 carries as the team was forced to abandon the run as they got down 10-0 and struggled moving the ball. Elliott made the most of his 15 carries against a good defense as he ran for 69 yards in this game. The Panthers have an elite run defense, so it was great to see that the Cowboys were still able to have success even with their injury-riddled offensive line. It is going to take a few weeks for this offensive line to really come together especially when you have a new center in Joe Looney with Travis Frederick being out.

The Giants are a team that has elite defensive tackles and if you can get past those defensive tackles you are going to have tremendous success running the ball. The Giants may get Olivier Vernon back this week which if they do would be a tremendous help especially on lateral runs, but he still has not practiced as of Wednesday. The biggest issue for the Giants is that they are setup to stop the pass and put a tremendous amount of pressure on their middle linebackers B.J. Goodson and Alec Ogletree both struggled in 2017. Ezekiel Elliott has a great history against the Giants rushing for over 100 yards in two of his three games against the team and scoring a touchdown in the other game, so look for the Cowboys to utilize Elliott in a big way and if the offensive line can block Damien Harrison and Dalvin Tomlinson this could be a big week for Elliott.

Cowboys Passing offense

Tough matchup vs. the Giants defense.

Dak Prescott dating back to Week 8 of 2017 simply needs to play better and more consistently for this passing offense to emerge back to what it once was. The issue for 2018 is that there is a depletion of talent at the receiving position as the team did not do enough to replace losing Dez Bryant and the departure of Jason Witten. In Week 1, Cole Beasley was the only consistent target for this offense as he was the only Cowboys receiver to have more than five targets and more than 27 yards.

The Giants secondary played tremendously against the Jaguars last week as they were often forced into one-on-one coverage and both Eli Apple and Janoris Jenkins lived up to their talent levels. If Eli Apple can play up to his ability this could be a unit that is one of the best in football, but the issue for Apple has always been inconsistency. The one weak spot for the Giants is slot corner B.W. Webb as the veteran has struggled throughout a lot of his career and he will have one of the more difficult matchups this week going up against Cole Beasley.
