Seahawks Rushing offense

Good matchup vs. the Rams defense.

The Seahawks ground game continued to roll last week despite injury news swirling around Chris Carson up until game time. Carson suited up despite a hip injury and had a relatively effective first half with 40 rushing yards on eight carries coming mostly in the first quarter. Carson would not return after halftime though and will remain questionable with what is being called a hip and groin injury. Mike Davis ended with 15 carries for 62 yards as he took over the workload throughout the second half. This Seahawks coaching staff proves week in and week out that they will run the ball no matter who is in the backfield. Russell Wilson even got involved in the action last week as he put together a few nice runs for 41 total rushing yards, his most in a game this season. The offensive line has done a great job thus far and had a solid game against a stout Chargers defensive line last week.

The Rams showed again last week that they can be susceptible to plays on the ground as they allowed a running back to rush for over 80 yards and a touchdown for the second straight week. This group has now given up multiple rushing touchdowns to running backs in two straight games after allowing just three total rushing touchdowns to running backs through their first seven contests. The Seahawks running backs Davis and Carson gashed the Rams for a combined 184 rushing yards in their Week 5 meeting--the most rushing yards any team has amassed on Low Angeles this season. When Aaron Donald is contained and running backs can get beyond this stout defensive line, the Rams linebackers and secondary have struggled to make quick and efficient tackles. With the Seahawks offensive line playing even better now than they were earlier in the season, this run-heavy offense has a good chance to amass over 100 rushing yards for the second time this season against the Rams.

Seahawks Passing offense

Good matchup vs. the Rams defense.

The Seahawks passing offense has taken a back seat to their ground game for most of this season as Russell Wilson has still yet to cross the 300-yard passing threshold. Last week, Wilson did sling it more than usual as he exceeded 30 pass attempts for just the second time in his last six outings. However, he was highly inefficient with those passes, finishing with a season-low 6.0 yards per attempt as Wilsonís game has centered around short passing all season long. Wilson does have multiple passing touchdowns in all but one outing, as it is only the touchdowns that have salvaged his fantasy floor. David Moore led the Seahawks in targets for the second straight week, but he dropped off last week to end his three-game touchdown streak as Moore turned in a poor showing. Doug Baldwin has let down more often than not this season with just two games above 50 receiving yards and no touchdowns as he simply is not getting enough volume to put up any resemblance of his stat lines in previous seasons. Tyler Lockett remains a touchdown-dependent option for the Seahawks. Mike Davis saw plenty of dump-offs last week as that was the first time all season a Seahawks running back has hauled in more than four receptions in a game. With a pass-heavy game script likely ahead, Davis could be in for more dump-off work this week.

The Rams defense is a potent group capable of disrupting opposing offenses at the line of scrimmage, but they have a glaring weakness in their secondary that is tough to ignore. Marcus Peters has truly taken a turn for the worst in 2018, as he has already allowed more yards in coverage through nine games than he did in the entire 2017 season. Quarterbacks have targeted Peters 20 times over the past two weeks, and there is no reason to believe Wilson wonít have his eyes on Peters for much of this game. Tyler Lockett and David Moore should both have opportunities against Peters in this matchup. Doug Baldwin will find himself under tougher coverage coming out of the slot, as Nickell Robey-Coleman is one of the top slot cornerbacks in the league. The one saving grace for this secondary will be the strength of the Rams defensive line, which is one of the best in football. The Seahawks offensive line has been decent in pass protection this season, but it will be tough to contain the likes of Aaron Donald and Dante Fowler crashing into that weaker right side of this offensive line. Look for very little production from Seahawks tight ends as their services will be better suited blocking than running routes this week.

Rams Rushing offense

Tough matchup vs. the Seahawks defense.

Todd Gurley and the Rams rushing offense had their toughest game on the ground this season last week, amassing just 92 rushing yards despite averaging nearly five yards per rush as a team. The game script played a big factor in the lack of touches on the ground for Gurley last week, rushing a season-low 13 yards for 68 yards but yet another rushing touchdown. Gurley has been the most dominant player in all of fantasy football this season, and last week was clearly a floor game for him. The offensive line should remain atop Footballguys offensive line specialist Matt Bitontiís rankings headed into this week, while Gurley remains near the top of all rankings as the top fantasy running back available.

After back to back impressive outings against the run allowing just 73 rushing yards to running backs over two games, the Seahawks defense caved last week as they allowed Melvin Gordon to average 7.1 yards per carry on his way to 113 rushing yards and a touchdown. Seattle now ranks near the middle of the pack in run defense this season, as they have been quite inconsistent depending on the opponent. The common theme is that this defense has struggled when the opposing offense has a decent ground game. See games against the Chargers, Rams, and Cowboys as examples. Todd Gurley amassed three touchdowns in his last meeting with the Seahawks, but he was not very efficient on the ground. The Seahawks were also without linebacker K.J. Wright in that matchup, who made his season debut in Week 8. With two games under his belt, Wright will certainly help make a difference for this run defense. Even with both Wright and Thomas to help keep tabs on Gurley, the Rams offense sports the best offensive line and running back combination in football and will be very tough to stop.

Rams Passing offense

Tough matchup vs. the Seahawks defense.

The Rams were back to full strength last week with the return of Cooper Kupp as their passing offense rolled to nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns. Jared Goff spread the ball out well to his trio of top receiving options last week as this offense again displayed how dangerous it can be with these three wide receivers all bringing different skills to the table. Brandin Cooks has been a magnet for the deep ball in recent weeks, hauling in the vast majority of deep passes from Goff over their last four games while averaging over 20 yards per reception in that span of games. Cooper Kupp picked up right where he left off last week as he now has surpassed 70 yards with at least 1 touchdown in four straight full games played. Robert Woods leads the pack amongst these Rams receivers as he has quietly amassed top-10 fantasy receiver numbers this season, leading the Rams in targets and receiving yards. Todd Gurley has also, of course, been a consistent threat for this passing offense as he is averaging 40 receiving yards per game and has hauled in a season-high six receptions in back-to-back outings.

Seattleís secondary has struggled against receivers in their last two games, giving up over 110 receiving yards to an opposing wide receiver in back to back games with four touchdowns to wide receivers over that span. The cornerback group for Seattle is far from spectacular, and they have shown particular vulnerability to slot receivers--as displayed by Keenan Allenís 124-yard outing last week, Emmanuel Sanders amassing 135 yards and a touchdown in Week 1, and even Cooper Kupp putting up 90 yards and a touchdown in the first half alone (before suffering a concussion) during the previous meeting between these teams. These Seahawks safeties are playing a big role in how this passing defense has allowed just the ninth-fewest passing yards per attempt while their run-heavy offense has helped keep overall passing yardage down to the 6th-fewest allowed in the league. These cornerbacks are certainly exploitable, and these Rams receivers have busted secondaries on a weekly basis this season.
