Giants Rushing offense

Neutral matchup vs. the 49ers defense.

The Giants come out of their bye on the heels of a terrible rushing performance as Saquon Barkley whiffed on his much-needed big play, rushing 13 times for only 38 yards with a long run of only nine yards. It has not been pretty for Barkley and this rushing offense when he canít bust a long run, as Barkley has now rushed for fewer than 50 yards in five of eight games to start the season. Barkley remains productive though, as he has five rushing touchdowns and is still averaging 4.7 yards per attempt to go along with his heavy usage in the passing game. He has played over 90 percent of the snaps in back to back games, so no other Giants running back will be challenging Barkley for work as long as he remains healthy. The offensive line in New York has proven to be a challenge though, as this unit grades out as a bottom-tier group according to Footballguys offensive line specialist Matt Bitonti. The bye week may help with the likes of right tackle Chad Wheeler recovering from an ankle injury. The Giants also picked up guard Jamon Brown from the Rams to help contribute to this underperforming unit.

The 49ers didnít have to defend against a ton of rushes last week, but they still allowed the stagnant Raiders offense to amass over 100 rushing yards driven mainly by a few flukey runs to bump up their total rushing total. Lead running back Doug Martin was still held under 50 yards on the ground as the 49ers have not allowed a running back to cross 70 yards since Week 4, in which Melvin Gordon was the only running back to do so against this unit on the year. The 49ers have given up multiple rushing touchdowns on 3 separate occasions to elite running back talents, which bodes well for the likes of Barkley who ranks among the top backs in the league. Barkley will be running behind a terrible offensive line though, which does not match up well against this above average 49ers defensive line anchored by Deforest Buckner. Injuries need to be watched here though, as two of San Franciscoís main run-stoppers outside of their defensive linemen--Reuben Foster and Jaquiski Tartt--were both injured leading into the bye week and remain questionable for Monday nights game.

Giants Passing offense

Good matchup vs. the 49ers defense.

The Giants coaching staff squashed any doubts about Eli Manningís job as it was confirmed early in the week he would be starting on Monday night. There are plenty of cases to be made on why Manning may need to be benched--from averaging fewer than seven passing yards per attempt in five of his eight games to passing for multiple touchdowns in just two outings this season, it is clear that Manning has not performed well. He will hold down the fort against San Francisco this week though, with Odell Beckham stacking up to be his top target per the usual. Beckham has seen double-digit targets in all but one game this season as he is tied for the second-most targeted wide receiver in the league. He has hauled in eight receptions and over 130 receiving yards in three of his last four games with over 100 receiving yards in five games this season. He is a clear favorite in the eyes of Manning, who has consistently used the rest of this group of Giants receivers and tight ends. If Manning canít find Beckham open, he typically has been dumping off to Saquon Barkley, who has seen double-digit targets in three straight games while averaging just over seven receptions and 62 receiving yards per game.

The 49ers passing defense was made to look great last week by an absolutely terrible Raiders offense, but they are truly a below average unit as a whole. The 49ers have given up multiple passing touchdowns in all but two outings this season with the fewest interceptions in the league as they sit at the bottom of the league in takeaways with just five. San Francisco has excelled at getting to the quarterback though, tied for the seventh-most sacks in the league with pressure coming from all over this defense. The Giants have given up a whopping 31 sacks this season, tied for third-most in the league, which certainly points to a mismatch in the trenches in favor of San Francisco. Richard Sherman has cooled off from his hot start, but he remains a tough matchup for any opposing receiver. Sherman should see close to half of his snaps opposite Odell Beckham, who has been relatively matchup-proof in most instances this season. With Jaquiski Tartt likely out, backup strong safety Tyvis Powell had a terrible debut as a starter last week and is a big play waiting to happen. On the flip side, linebacker Fred Warner has been one of the top coverage linebackers in the league when looking after running backs out of the backfield, meaning Saquon Barkley should have a bit less room to run on those screen passes this week.

49ers Rushing offense

Good matchup vs. the Giants defense.

The 49ers rushing offense continues to battle through injury woes as Matt Breida led the backfield last week with 12 carries for 44 yards despite a nagging ankle injury. Breida has been an iron man for the 49ers this season, playing in all nine games despite being carted off the field on multiple occasions while dealing with a plethora of injuries. Breidaís toughness has not been matched with productivity though, as he has rushed for just 101 yards over his last three games with zero touchdowns to show for it. Raheem Mostert had looked spectacular when given the opportunity this season, and he was on his way to the best game of his career after scoring his first touchdown until suffering a gruesome arm injury that has landed him on the season-ending injured reserve. Matt Breida will continue to fight through injuries to lead this backfield while Alfred Morris remains a steady change of pace option who could take over the backfield entirely if Breida goes down again. Center Weston Richburg returned last week after missing Week 8, which brings this borderline top-10 unit back to full strength.

The Giants defense has been ineffective against the run for most of this season, giving up 4.5 yards per carry and 122.4 rushing yards per game--10th most in the league. Things will not improve for the Giants either after trading away Damon Harrison to the Lions in Week 7. In their first game without Harrison, the Giants were ravaged by Adrian Peterson as he amassed 149 yards and a touchdown, basically picking up yards at will as he wore down this defense. The Giants defensive line still has some talent, but Harrison was a huge loss on the interior while they have a clear weakness at the linebacker position whether Alec Ogletree is healthy enough to suit up or not. The 49ers have the edge in the trenches here, so as long as they can find a healthy body to consistently get carries, this rushing offense should have a chance at solid production.

49ers Passing offense

Neutral matchup vs. the Giants defense.

Nick Mullens, the undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi, came on to the scene with a bang last week in his NFL debut as he lit up the Raiders by completing 72.7 percent of his passes for 262 passing yards and three touchdowns. Mullens made great decisions and looked poised in his high pressure debut, but it was against a terrible Raiders defense that has been porous to opposing passing defenses with absolutely no pressure placed on opposing quarterbacks this season. George Kittle remains a slam dunk option at tight end for the 49ers, as he led them in receiving yards with his third touchdown of the season. Kittleís role in this offense is clear, regardless of quarterback. He has at least four receptions in seven straight games and is averaging 77 yards per game on the season. The outlook for Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin has to be at least marginally depressed here though, as a third-string quarterback like Mullens hasnít had the opportunity to develop chemistry with the starters like he has with the likes of Kendrick Bourne and Richie James. Neither James nor Bourne can be seriously considered as fantasy options this week, but both should continue to see a few looks from Mullens.

The Giants should pose more of a challenge for Mullens this week. They definitely have a better pass rush than Oakland, and safety Landon Collins is playing quite well in this secondary. Cornerback Grant Haley played relatively well from the slot in his first game filling in for the departed Eli Apple, but that was against a rather inept Redskins passing offense. Both Garcon and Goodwin should be fine with their matchups on the outside. The pass rush for New York is led by Olivier Vernon, who has been a monster since returning from injury in Week 6. The 49ers offensive line has struggled in pass protection this season, giving up 31 sacks this season (T-3rd most), which should make Vernon and company excited for this matchup. Tight ends have not found the end zone often against the Giants this season as Collins is doing an excellent job in coverage, but their linebackers have given up their fair share of yards underneath, so Kittle still has a shot at doing some damage here.
