Draft Slots Study - 14 Teams / Pick 1.01
By Chris Smith
July 28th, 2010

One of the most familiar discussions in terms of fantasy football leagues each season is on the positives and negatives for each of the draft slots. While I believe it is possible to win a league no matter where you draft from, it is obvious to the veteran fantasy owner that there is some advantage to drafting in certain positions. In addition, there are some pratfalls to avoid in certain situations of a fantasy draft.

This second series of draft slot articles will take an in-depth look at some of the fourteen draft positions in a 14-team, redraft fantasy football league and outline the positives and negatives of each slot. The 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th and 14th slots will be broken down trying to showcase the different challenges in certain slots. If you draft in the middle of these selections, read the articles before and after your own selection and you will get a very good idea how your draft will break down. In addition each separate article will showcase a mock draft compiled using the Draft Dominator.

After this series is complete, I will try to break down many other styles of leagues (16-team, 8-team, 10-team, FLEX options, PPR, etc. depending on time.)

This particular series is based on...

  • 14-team redraft league / 18-round fantasy draft
  • Must start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE
  • Scoring is as follows:
  • 1 point every 20 passing yards
  • 1 point every 10 rushing yards
  • 4 points per passing touchdown
  • 6 points per rushing / receiving touchdown
  • 3 points per field goal / 1 point per extra point
  • 2 points per interception, fumble recovery and safety
  • 1 point per sack
  • 6 points per defensive touchdown
  • 10 points per shutout
  • This study is performed using the mock draft function within our own Draft Dominator software. The program gives you the ability to draft for one team and have the other teams taken over by computer control using different ADP lists. For the purpose of this study, I will use David Dodds' projections found within the Dominator. The mock draft ability of the Dominator is a nice way to prepare for your fantasy draft. Running the same draft several times will help you to anticipate all possible scenarios when your own draft arrives. Check it out today.

If you would like to see a particular study this season, please send me an e-mail at smith@footballguys.com, and I will do my best to cover your scoring rules, starting lineup requirements, etc. before the end of training camp.

    Let's get to it!

    Drafting 1st overall (14-team re-draft)

While always a luxury to draft first overall, in 14-team leagues, there is a very long wait between picks and it is critical this owner selects his players wisely as his turn comes around. Getting the top running back on your board is always a great way to begin a draft as is landing three of the top twenty-nine players. With 27 players taken off the board between your 1st and 2nd pick, it is impossible to predict which two players you will take with the 2nd and 3rd picks so be patient, don't fall in love with particular players and let the draft unfold.

Possible strategies to incorporate into your draft

There are many possible paths for this owner to take in a draft depending on how the draft unfolds in the first two rounds. Don't be hesitant to simply take the best two players available regardless of position as landing the best running back in round one means you have a jump up already on your fellow owners.

    Examples

    1. League that goes RB heavy in first two rounds: Many leagues out there still feature running backs flying off the board in the first two rounds. Getting the top overall back in the first allows you to be ahead of the curve there.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • QB Philip Rivers - 4.14
  • RB Chris Johnson - 1.01
  • WR Reggie Wayne - 2.14
  • WR Calvin Johnson - 3.01
  • WR Anquan Boldin - 5.01
  • If your league does go running back heavy through the first few rounds, do not panic as there are many guys to choice from in the 3rd to 7th rounds. Having the top running back on board means you can afford to hold off on the position, securing great talent at receiver and quarterback. There will still be serviceable running backs available in the upcoming rounds including Marion Barber, Laurence Maroney, Montario Hardesty and Chester Taylor to name a few.

    2. League that has more flexibility in first two rounds: If your league has more flexibility in the top include the best quarterbacks and receivers off the board, then a more conventional approach is in order.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • QB Philip Rivers - 5.01
  • RB Chris Johnson - 1.01
  • RB DeAngelo Williams - 2.14
  • RB Shonn Greene - 3.01
  • WR Anquan Boldin - 4.14
  • Obviously the strength of this team is going to be at quarterback and running back. The receiver position is going to be lagging behind but you can make that up with wise choices in the middle rounds. Having a running back trio like this is a huge boon to any fantasy team.

    Positives of the draft slot

  • Landing the top running back on your draft board is always huge
  • Three of the top twenty-nine players is a big plus
  • Back-to-back picks can really dictate the direction of the draft
  • Negatives of the draft slot

  • Long, LONG wait between picks
  • Positions can dry up depending on the 27 picks between selections

    Draft Slots Study 14-01

Breaking down the mock draft from the 14.01 draft position

    Round 1.01: RB Chris Johnson

Not much thought process here. Take the top running back on your board.

Round 2.14 / 3.01: RB DeAngelo Williams / RB Shonn Greene

I definitely didn't plan to take two running backs in this spot going into the draft but having two running backs with this level of potential available with the 28th and 29th picks is fantastic. Sure it may mean having a sub-par receiving core but I'll be stocked up at running back and can always make a strong trade once the season gets underway. The only other player I consider here is Brandon Marshall but he simply isn't attractive enough to leave either of these players on the board.

Round 4.14 / 5.01: WR Anquan Boldin / QB Philip Rivers

After my third round pick, I definitely planned on going WR/WR here. However I didn't plan on a top quarterback being available with my 57th pick and I simply cannot leave him on the draft board. I almost pulled the trigger on Michael Crabtree instead but having a quarterback with the production capability of Rivers available in round five is a huge benefit to my fantasy squad. Going forward, it is obvious that my receiving core is going to be weaker than most in the league but the strength at the other positions will off-set that.

Round 6.14 / 7.01: WR Lee Evans / WR Malcolm Floyd

After my fifth round selection, I know I have to target two receivers in this spot. I have no real choice unless exceptional value is present. I manage to find two capable receivers that will function as WR2 and WR3 for my team. Both are capable of 1000-yard / 6 touchdown types of seasons as well as disappointing but at this point of the draft, I am happy to land them both.

Round 8.14 / 9.01: TE Chris Cooley / RB Montario Hardesty

I plan once again on at least one receiver in this spot but the only two I really coveted went off just before my pick (Vincent Jackson and Kenny Britt). I reverse directions here and land a tight end I love this year in Cooley and a running back with huge upside in Hardesty. I really like Cooley this season, teaming with McNabb to put up really strong numbers. Hardesty is running behind an offensive line I really like for run blocking prowess this season and he may emerge as a workhorse for the team. Certainly worth a flyer as the 113th pick of the draft.

At the halfway point of the draft, our team looks like this:

    Quarterbacks

  • Philip Rivers - 5.01
  • Running Backs

  • Chris Johnson - 1.01
  • DeAngelo Williams - 2.14
  • Shonn Greene - 3.01
  • Montario Hardesty - 9.01
  • Wide Receivers

  • Anquan Boldin - 4.14
  • Lee Evans - 6.14
  • Malcolm Floyd - 7.01
  • Tight Ends

  • Chris Cooley - 8.14
  • Place Kickers

  • none
  • Defenses

  • none
  • Well the draft certainly did not unfold as I expected it to but having a running back stable as strong as this in addition to a legitimate top-five quarterback is a great way to begin the draft. The obviously weakness through nine picks is the receiver position and I'll have to find some talent in the later rounds to avoid a true liability on the roster.

Rounds 10-14: Packers defense / WR Wes Welker / WR Bernard Berrian / QB Matt Leinart / WR Demaryius Thomas

Perhaps I should look at going WR/WR in the 10th and 11th rounds but at this point in the draft I see 20-30 receivers all bunch together in potential and production levels and I would rather secure a good defensive squad in this spot. Landing Wes Welker in the eleventh round could be massive for my fantasy squad if he can leave the injury behind him. I managed to add two more receivers with upside in Berrian and Thomas and hopefully at least one of them will exceed the draft position. Finally I land a backup quarterback for my roster with a ton of upside to go with some risk. If Leinart can prove he's matured, he will be an excellent QB2 for a fantasy league.

Rounds 15-18: TE Kevin Boss / K Neil Rackers / DEF Houston / WR Terrell Owens

This is the spot to flesh out the roster. I land my backup tight end and defense, both of whom I believe will exceed their draft slot as well as a good kicker in a great situation. Finally I take a flyer on Owens who was unsigned at the time of this study. Now that he's in Cincinnati, his value will rise.

    Final Roster (Draft Slot 14.01)

    Quarterbacks

  • Philip Rivers - 5.01
  • Matt Leinart - 13.01
  • Running Backs

  • Chris Johnson - 1.01
  • DeAngelo Williams - 2.14
  • Shonn Greene - 3.01
  • Montario Hardesty - 9.01
  • Wide Receivers

  • Anquan Boldin - 4.14
  • Lee Evans - 6.14
  • Malcolm Floyd - 7.01
  • Wes Welker - 11.01
  • Bernard Berrian - 12.14
  • Demaryius Walker - 14.14
  • Terrell Owens - 18.14
  • Tight Ends

  • Chris Cooley - 8.14
  • Kevin Boss - 15.01
  • Place Kickers

  • Neil Rackers - 16.14
  • Defenses

  • Packers defense - 10.14
  • Texans defense - 17.01
  • Final thoughts on this roster

Well, I really like the makeup of this fantasy squad. Obviously I am very strong at quarterback and running back (although I am only four deep at the running back position which could cause problems). I stayed at four deep at running back though in order to secure plenty of depth at my weakest position, receiver. However, while my biggest question mark is at receiver, I do have plenty of upside and potential depending on how things break down this season. Welker and Owens are proven fantasy stars who have plummeted for different reasons (injury and age) while Berrian, Floyd and Evans have experience and can surprise with a big season and rookie Thomas will be given every opportunity to shine. I love my tight ends and believe Cooley may have a top-five season in him while my kicker and defensive slots are very good. Overall, this team will have an excellent chance to thrive in 2010.

Last thoughts on the 14.01 draft slot

Drafting 1st overall is always a benefit simply due to getting the top running back on your draft board and three of the top 29 players in the draft. However the long gap between picks does present challenges of their own and you have to make the right choices when your two picks arrive or you may struggle at times in the draft. The easiest game plan here is to be patient and allow the draft to unfold, simply taking the best players through the first five or six rounds and then fleshing out the roster. If that means you have just one receiver on the squad through six rounds or four receivers on the squad, so be it. Drafting this way will ensure you have a talented and deep squad.

    Good luck and happy drafting!
