Draft Slots Study - 12 Teams / Pick 1.10
By Chris Smith
July 23rd, 2010

One of the most familiar discussions in terms of fantasy football leagues each season is on the positives and negatives for each of the draft slots. While I believe it is possible to win a league no matter where you draft from, it is obvious to the veteran fantasy owner that there is some advantage to drafting in certain positions. In addition, there are some pratfalls to avoid in certain situations of a fantasy draft. This first series of draft slot articles will take an in-depth look at each of the twelve draft positions in a 12-team, redraft fantasy football league and outline the positives and negatives of each slot. In addition each separate article will showcase a mock draft compiled using the Draft Dominator.

After this series is complete, I will try to break down many other styles of leagues (14-team, 16-team, 8-team, FLEX options, etc.)

This particular series is based on...

  • 12-team redraft league / 18-round fantasy draft
  • Must start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE
  • Scoring is as follows:
  • 1 point every 20 passing yards
  • 1 point every 10 rushing yards
  • 4 points per passing touchdown
  • 6 points per rushing / receiving touchdown
  • 3 points per field goal / 1 point per extra point
  • 2 points per interception, fumble recovery and safety
  • 1 point per sack
  • 6 points per defensive touchdown
  • 10 points per shutout
  • This study is performed using the mock draft function within our own Draft Dominator software. The program gives you the ability to draft for one team and have the other teams taken over by computer control using different ADP lists. For the purpose of this study, I will use David Dodds' projections found within the Dominator. The mock draft ability of the Dominator is a nice way to prepare for your fantasy draft. Running the same draft several times will help you to anticipate all possible scenarios when your own draft arrives. Check it out today.

If you would like to see a particular study this season, please send me an e-mail at smith@footballguys.com, and I will do my best to cover your scoring rules, starting lineup requirements, etc. before the end of training camp.

    Let's get to it!

    Drafting 10th overall (12-team re-draft)

In some ways, I find drafting 10th an easier spot to be in than an owner drafting in the 7 thru 9 hole. Getting the jump on them in the 2nd round is huge and the round one players are similar in talent. The key to drafting 10th overall is to take the best two players when your pick comes up regardless of position. If you reach for running backs with the 10th and 15th overall picks, you'll be behind many of the other teams at both running back AND receiver. That doesn't mean ignore the running back position in round one and two but rather let the draft unfold and take the best two players on your draft board. If you do this through the first several rounds, you will have a strong, dependable foundation going forward.

Possible strategies to incorporate into your draft

There are certainly many different strategies to pursue here. Let your league draft unfold and draft accordingly.

    Examples

    1. League that goes RB heavy in first two rounds: Many leagues out there still feature running backs flying off the board in the first two rounds. If you see this in round one of your league, the choice becomes very simple. Skip the running back position and load up at QB / WR.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • RB Jonathan Stewart - 3.10
  • RB Justin Forsett - 5.10
  • WR Andre Johnson - 1.10
  • WR Larry Fitzgerald - 2.03
  • WR Brandon Marshall - 4.03
  • Obviously the receiver position is going to be the strength of this roster but the running back stable has potential as well. It will be important to have at least six running backs on roster if you follow this path to maximize potential.

    2. League that has more flexibility in first two rounds: If your league has more flexibility in the top include the best quarterbacks and receivers off the board, then a more conventional approach is in order. In this case you are likely to find a capable running back or two on the board in the first two rounds.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • RB Steven Jackson - 1.10
  • RB Jonathan Stewart - 3.10
  • WR Reggie Wayne - 2.03
  • WR Brandon Marshall - 4.03
  • WR Anquan Boldin - 5.10
  • Obviously the big difference here is that Jonathan Stewart as the 2nd running back and not the first with this team and the receiver core is a little weaker (although still very good). Looking at this team, it is in great shape after the fifth round to do some damage in this league.

    Positives of the draft slot

  • Early 2nd round pick
  • Can easily determine who will be available between odd and even round picks
  • Lots of different possible paths in first several rounds.
  • Negatives of the draft slot

  • Miss out on top-tier running back AND possibly top-tier receiver talent depending on the breakdown of your draft board
  • Long wait between even and odd round picks will make it tough to determine available positions in next pick(s)
  • Final Draft Table

Breaking down the mock draft from the 10th draft position

    Round 1.10: WR Larry Fitzgerald

One of the best receivers in the game today although he does have a couple of giant question marks in regards to the upcoming season. Will Kurt Warner's retirement have a negative impact on the potential receptions for Fitzgerald? Can Matt Leinart realize his potential in 2010? If the two answers to that question are 'no' and 'yes' respectively then I believe that Fitzgerald can be a monster this season as he enters the prime of his career. He gives this squad a potentially huge advantage in round one.

    Round 2.03: WR Reggie Wayne

Without question it is tough to ignore the urges to select a running back here but looking at the draft board, there are plenty of running backs that should be available rounds three through six. Getting a WR2 like Reggie Wayne gives this squad an excellent beginning and the start of an elite receiver group to lean upon.

    Round 3.10: RB Jonathan Stewart

With his getting healthier, he may not be available here when your draft gets underway. If he is available, he would be a no-brainer. If not and if no obvious running backs are available, don't shy away from selecting a player like Brendan Marshall as an insanely terrific WR3 for a fantasy squad.

    Round 4.03: RB Felix Jones

Waiting on the running back position has paid off in spades as Jones is capable of putting up really strong numbers in 2010. He has some risk attached to being a fantasy starter but has the ability to be a top-ten fantasy performer this season.

    Round 5.10: WR Anquan Boldin

So many possible paths to take with this pick as some good running backs are available. If one stands out here over the other then it may make sense to add your third one here. However, landing a receiver such as Boldin here can flat out help to win your championship and secures your place as the squad with the best starting trio in the entire league. You cannot go wrong with Fitzgerald, Wayne and Boldin

    Round 6.03: RB Brandon Jacobs

Jacobs has tumbled down the draft boards this year but he is still capable of putting up really good statistics. The Giants offensive line is very strong and he'll get his chances to erase a disappointing 2009 campaign. Finding a running back like him in the sixth round can be a major coupe for your fantasy team.

    Round 7.10: RB C.J. Spiller

There are multiple possible paths here but really, when you ignore running back in the first couple of rounds, loading up on the position is a wonderful idea in these early-mid rounds. Spiller has amazing potential and could without question be a 7th round steal. I see good tight ends and receivers available and still need a quarterback but have to make this pick here.

    Round 8.03: RB Marion Barber

Maybe it would be a more appropriate move here to get my quarterback or tight end picked here and even one of the receivers still on the board make some sense. However landing Barber here guarantees this squad points from the Dallas running back stable and that may mean huge fantasy numbers. He is a terrific RB for round eight.

    Round 9.10: QB Matthew Stafford

Waiting until round nine to select a quarterback is risky but I see some good dark-horse picks from here and beyond and landing Stafford means I have a serviceable fantasy starter with possible upside. What else can you ask out of the 9th round pick?

At the halfway point of the draft, our team looks like this:

    Quarterbacks

  • Matthew Stafford 9.10
  • Running Backs

  • Jonathan Stewart - 3.10
  • Felix Jones - 4.03
  • Brandon Jacobs - 6.03
  • C.J. Spiller - 7.10
  • Marion Barber - 8.03
  • Wide Receivers

  • Larry Fitzgerald - 1.10
  • Reggie Wayne - 2.03
  • Anquan Boldin - 5.10
  • Tight Ends

  • none
  • Place Kickers

  • none
  • Defenses

  • none
  • It should be obvious which position is the strongest on the team when you go receiver/receiver in the first two rounds. However and surprisingly, the five running backs on the roster and talented and capable of big things in fantasy football. This could result in receivers taking a back seat to the running backs on the squad. The quarterback position is questionable at this point but Stafford does have upside and tight end hasn't been addressed yet which may become an issue soon. However after nine picks, this team looks pretty strong and should be in contention for a title.

Rounds 10-14: TE John Carlson / WR Vincent Jackson / WR Santonio Holmes / QB Ben Roethlisberger / Packers Defense

I consider waiting on tight end position but I love the upside of Carlson and believe he can greatly exceed this draft position. He will be a fantasy tight end. The next two picks are interesting. With my starting receivers outstanding and the best in the league, I can afford to take some risks here. Both Vincent Jackson and Santonio Holmes would go in the first four rounds if the baggage wasn't there (Jackson holding out and Holmes suspended four games). I do not need either player out of the shoot and can afford to wait. If Jackson signs, he will be a likely starter for my team and give me great trade fodder. Holmes also will be very valuable when he returns. Roethlisberger is another guy I am counting on as the season wears on. Stafford will be the guy until Roethlisberger is finished with his suspension. Finally the Packers defense is going to be very strong as a good DEF1.

Rounds 15-18: WR Devin Aromashodu / K Garrett Hartley / DEF NY Giants / TE Brandon Pettigrew

To round out the roster I select a couple of young, talented pass-catchers as well as my 2nd defense and kicker.

    Final Roster (Draft Slot #10)

    Quarterbacks

  • Matthew Stafford - 9.10
  • Ben Roethlisberger - 13.10
  • Running Backs

  • Jonathan Stewart - 3.10
  • Felix Jones - 4.03
  • Brandon Jacobs - 6.03
  • C.J. Spiller - 7.10
  • Marion Barber - 8.03
  • Wide Receivers

  • Larry Fitzgerald - 1.10
  • Reggie Wayne - 2.03
  • Anquan Boldin - 5.10
  • Vincent Jackson - 11.10
  • Santonio Holmes - 12.03
  • Devin Aromashodu - 15.10
  • Tight Ends

  • John Carlson - 10.03
  • Brandon Pettigrew - 18.03
  • Place Kickers

  • Garrett Hartley - 16.03
  • Defenses

  • Packers - 14.03
  • Giants - 17.10
  • Final thoughts on this roster

If some of the risks pan out on this roster, it will be almost impossible to lose. Having three strong fantasy receivers drafted early allows myself to take a couple of huge swings for the fences with my later round selections. If Vincent Jackson and / or Santonio Holmes do get into the lineup and re-gain past form, I will have as strong of a fantasy receiver position as a team can have. Running back is surprisingly solid with five players picked up in the first eight rounds. Finding a gem like Roethlisberger in the latter stages is criminal. Sure you have to wait on him but he is a top-12 talent when healthy. Stafford has excellent upside and needs to hold the fort down in the early weeks. The tight end position features two young, talented kids that have top-ten potential. One is likely to break out in 2010 and perhaps even both. All in all, this squad is in a great position to win a lot of games and contend for the title.

Last thoughts on the 10th draft slot in a 12-team league

I actually like drafting from the 10-hole this season but only if you remain flexible in the first couple of rounds. DO NOT BE AFRAID to pick two non-running backs to begin your draft if that is how the league unfolds. Doing so with give you great advantage over the other owners in the league and there are many good options at running back in the middle rounds. Flexibility in rounds 1 and 2 will equate to success. If you do ignore the running back position in the first couple of rounds, try to load up with at least four in the next seven rounds.

    Good luck and happy drafting!
