Boller hurt his shoulder in Baltimore's second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings and has not played since. HC John Harbaugh described the injury as either a torn labrum or other damage that would render Boller unable to play this year. To fill Boller's place on the roster, the Ravens on Wednesday signed journeyman quarterback Todd Bouman.

QB Joe Flacco (BAL) Joe Flacco on Monday was officially named the Ravens' season-opening starter. Troy Smith, who seemed like the front-runner heading into the third preseason game, has lost 20pounds since coming down with an illness Aug.22. He will be the backup quarterback against Cincinnati. We thought he was the best fit for us. He's been in the offense before. He had a very good workout. The other guys had good workouts as well, but we thought that he was the best fit for us at this time."

*** Thursday Update *** QB Peyton Manning (IND) is not even mentioned on Thursday's practice report.

Looking forward to playing Sunday night, prime-time TV, and it'll be a great challenge playing against the Bears.''

*** Friday Update *** QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) practiced fully on Thursday.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) says his injured right knee, which he sprained during the preseason, is not yet back to 100 percent. But that's not enough to keep him off the field when his Minnesota Vikings open the NFL season against the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. "I'm playing Monday regardless," he told reporters on Tuesday. Jackson sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee against Baltimore on Aug. 16 and did not play in the Vikings' remaining preseason games.

QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) Tarvaris Jackson said after Monday's practice that he will play Monday night at Green Bay. Jackson missed the final three preseason games because of a sprained MCL in his right knee. "I feel good. Through the whole process I'm feeling better each day," Jackson said. "I had a couple days off, couple days to rehab. I feel a lot better." Jackson said there is nothing he can't do at this point.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) has a small crack in one of the bones in his foot according to some reports. However, he practiced fully on Wednesday. In his conference call with Kansas City reporters Wednesday, HC Bill Belichick was asked if Brady will play in Sunday's season-opener against the Chiefs. "He's practicing and I expect he'll be ready to go," Belichick said. According to one reporter present on the call, Belichick was pressed for more details about Brady. Belichick then said: "I expect him to be out there today, and I expect he'll be out there the rest of the week."

Brady's father said he had no knowledge of it. “All I can tell you is, to my knowledge, he doesn’t have a broken foot, or a broken bone in his foot,” Brady Sr. said last night. “He has never told me or his mother that he has a broken foot. He said he had some stress on the bone, and he said he was doing fine and that, quite frankly, he could have played if there was any necessity to play last week.”

QB Tom Brady (NE) Tom Brady says he will play in this weekend's season-opener.

QB Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) Matt Hasselbeck returned to the field Monday and stayed through the duration of practice for only the second time since Aug. 8, and he expects to be ready for the Seahawks' season opener at Buffalo. "I think I'm 100 percent healthy," he said afterward. "I'm probably not 100 percent in shape. That's what this week is for."

*** Saturday Update *** QB Alex Smith (SF) was added to the injury report Saturday, listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against Arizona with another problem in his surgically repaired right shoulder. Running Back

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Thomas Brown (ATL) was placed on the injured reserve list with a torn groin.

*** Friday Update *** RB Willis McGahee (BAL) partially participated in Friday's practice and it looks like he'll start but the team doesn't sound overly optimistic. When asked if McGahee would start, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said, "That's the plan, but it all depends on how the knee reacts," he said. "If it's not ready to go, then it doesn't make any sense to go out there. But if it's good, then it's a go. So I'd say it's about 50-50."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Willis McGahee (BAL) partially participated in Thursday's practice. He is currently a game-time decision. "You can see that he's getting close," OC Cam Cameron said. "Whether that'll mean this week or not, I don't know." He's a pretty risky pick as the Ravens seem to really like backup RB Ray Rice and they won't hesitate to use him if they don't feel that McGahee is ready.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Willis McGahee (BAL) partially participated in Wednesday's practice. HC John Harbaugh would give only the following line regarding McGahee's status: "Willis is practicing."

RB Willis McGahee (BAL) Willis McGahee practiced Monday. "I wouldn't say he's 100 percent just [from] watching him run around out there," Harbaugh said of McGahee. "But he was out there. We'll just have to see how he progresses this week. He wants to be out there, I know that."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ray Rice (BAL) will start for the team if Willis McGahee is unable to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Chris Perry (CIN) will start this weekend, but he is not expected to be overloaded with touches. OC Bob Bratkowski said after Wednesday's practice he's not looking to give Perry a heavy-duty number of carries right away and plans to spell him with Kenny Watson and maybe DeDe Dorsey. "We'll have packages for them as we go into the week with different things for them to do and different roles to play," Bratkowski said. Asked if Perry would get something like 25 carries, Bratkowski said, "I don't think that would be the plan initially. We want to be able to ease him into a full game. We have other good quality backs. Let some other guys take some turns and make sure he's strong all the way throughout the game."

*** Friday Update *** RB Kenny Watson (CIN) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Kenny Watson (CIN) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

RB Jerome Harrison (CLE) Jerome Harrison is the backup running back according to HC Romeo Crennel: "If Jamal were gone for an extended period of time, you would basically see Jerome take over the first- and second-down type plays, and Jason [Wright] would probably stay in the role he has now, which is a third-down back and a special teams guy."

*** Friday Update *** RB Jamal Lewis (CLE) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend. He will be a game-time decision. The team will likely be cautious about rushing him back. If Lewis can't play, Jerome Harrison and Jason Wright will carry the load.

"That's what they've been preparing to do," coach Romeo Crennel said. "We've said all along that Jamal is a different kind of player that we're dealing with, and those guys, they're not to Jamal's level. We understand that, but they do bring something to the table and they'll help this team.

"They'll step in and do their part. Jason stepped in last year and he represented himself very well. Harrison, when he's had the opportunities to get in, he's shown that he can make some plays as well. So between the two of them, they might be able to live up to what Jamal gives us."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Jamal Lewis (CLE) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Jamal Lewis (CLE) partially participated in Wednesday's practice. He was eager to see how his hamstring responded to the work. "With a hamstring, it's a muscle," Lewis said. "Nothing heals a muscle but time...time and rest. I've had a lot of time and rest. Hopefully it feels good today when I go out there and put it to the test."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Peyton Hillis (DEN) will start for the team at FB. The team also released Cecil Sapp.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ryan Torain (DEN) will not play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Rudi Johnson (DET) participated in his first full practice with his new team. HC Rod Marinelli said he saw no lingering effects from Johnson's hamstring injury that kept him out of the entire preseason while with the Bengals. Johnson concurred. "Once I get the pass protections down, I'll be fine," he said. "I haven't practiced since the beginning of last week, so to come out here and test (the hamstring) and get some confidence, it felt very good. No soreness or anything." Johnson will serve as Kevin Smith's backup.

RB Rudi Johnson (DET) Rudi Johnson says he expects to play in Week 1 despite signing with the Lions just a couple of days ago.

*** Friday Update *** RB Kevin Smith (DET) OC Jim Colletto said Smith would start against the Falcons on Sunday, but Rudi Johnson will contribute. "How much he'll play Sunday, I don't know," Colletto said. "But he can play. I don't think we're going to ask Kevin to carry the load the whole day."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Ryan Grant (GB) practiced fully Saturday and will start Monday night against the Vikings. He rested Friday but it was just precautionary. The Packers are a little banged up but coach Mike McCarthy said they'd manage. "We're healthy enough," he said.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ahman Green (HOU) is not even listed on the team's practice report.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Ahman Green (HOU) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to start this weekend. "I don't see any reason why he won't [start]," said HC Gary Kubiak. "He looked good in practice, today. I plan on playing them all, to be honest with you. I could say right down the middle, but it usually doesn't end up that way. I plan on all of them playing. We'll be smart. He's not going to be ready to go in there and carry the ball an abundant amount of times but he's ready to play."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Steve Slaton (HOU) won't start this weekend, but he has a bright future according to HC Gary Kubiak. "Eventually this kid has a chance to be a heck of a player," said Kubiak. "How quick he gets to that point this year may have a lot to do with how far we go. But we're going to count on him. He'll get a bulk of work along with Ahman right now. We'll see where he's at but this football team is counting on him growing up pretty quick."

RB Maurice Jones-Drew (JAX) Maurice Jones-Drew returned and didn't appear to carry any residual effects from the sprain he suffered in the preseason game at Tampa on Aug. 23.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Kolby Smith (KC) did not practice on Thursday.

*** Friday Update *** RB Ricky Williams (MIA) will indeed start for the team this weekend according to HC Tony Sparano. "Ricky's going to start the game, yes, but Ronnie is going to play a bunch, and that's the way it goes," Sparano said.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Kevin Faulk (NE) will not play this weekend as he is serving a one-game suspension from the league.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB LaMont Jordan (NE) With running back Kevin Faulk serving a one-game suspension, the Patriots will need to fill the void in the two-minute offense. Faulk is a major weapon in that package, specifically as a pass catcher, and Jordan has prepared to assume that role if called upon. "I've always been a back who feels like I can do everything -- third down, goal-line -- I think I'm an every-down back," he said.

"If Willie gets tired, he'll be in there," Arians said of Mendenhall. "No special roles." Arians said the Steelers have not settled on who will be the team's short-yardage back.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Rashard Mendenhall (PIT) will return kickoffs, but HC Mike Tomlin still is not sure how much he will play at halfback. Mendenhall did not help his case when he lost three fumbles in the final two preseason games. "We're looking at his preparation this week, his attention to detail in terms of how he executes his assignments, and his level of ball security," Tomlin said. "That process will be ongoing. That's what it's about. We'll see as we get closer to game time."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Mewelde Moore (PIT) HC Mike Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly news conference that Mewelde Moore will serve as the team's third-down back.

RB Julius Jones (SEA) The Seahawks will feature Maurice Morris and Julius Jones as co-starters to begin the season as well as a new fullback, Leonard Weaver. Morris and Jones are better built for HC Mike Holmgren's West Coast Offense and can be used interchangeably. "Mo and Julius are the same kind of player, so the game doesn't change regardless of who's in there," OC Gil Haskell said. There will be runs to the to the outside and are more passes to the backs, including a return of the screen pass that used to be a signature play for the Seahawks. "Julius and I understand our situation," said Morris. "A lot of teams in the league are doing this, so it's no surprise to us that they're going to go in this direction."

But I also laid it out because it's really what I thought."

HC Mike Holmgren said on Wednesday that Branch will practice this week for the first time this season. If Branch responds favorably to the work out, there is a chance that he could play in the team's season opener on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. "There's no question about it. He was definitely beat and instead of recovering or giving up, I don't know how many options you had, but I just don't think there is any place for that in the NFL." Samuels said he wasn't trying to hurt anyone. "On that particular play I was just trying to protect my quarterback," Samuels said through a Redskins spokesman.
