Footballguys Staff Bio: Matt Kowalchuk
Age: 35
Birthplace: Vancouver, BC
Education: University of British Columbia (BA in Theatre, Film, and Creative Writing)
Occupation: Writer/ Director
Hometown: Vancouver, BC
Years playing fantasy football: 10 years as commissioner of The Hoser Football League, Eh? (and as a player in numerous other leagues).
Favorite FF smack talk: My innate Canadian politeness means that by nature I keep fairly quiet. I let my winning record do the talking.
Years writing about fantasy football: 2
Favorite FBG feature: The depth charts are the best quick reference tool that I use, hands down - and are much more thorough than any other site when I need to know about a specific player.
Organized football experience: High School
Favorite NFL team: Rams
Favorite college team: None.
Favorite fan moment: When I was seven years old, the Rams were playing the Steelers in the Super Bowl. I liked their helmets and bet a friend of my dad's $2 that they would win. Of course I lost that bet, but have been a fan ever since. I feel somehow fortunate that I never saw the Bengals play when I was younger.
Favorite player of all time: All Time - Joe Montana; Active - Isaac Bruce
NFL rule(s) I would change if I could: I would take a page out of the CFL rulebook and cut the play clock to 20 seconds.
Favorite movie(s): Sports Movies - Major League, Slap Shot, Remember The Titans, For Love of The Game.
Favorite musical genres/albums/artists: Lyle Lovett is a long time favourite, but I'm all over the map when it comes to music.
What I read: Everything. No, seriously, everything.
Hobbies: Playing tennis, fantasy football, feeding my scrabble addiction.
Favorite TV show(s): Entourage
Least favorite household chore: Take your pick.
Dream job: Filmmaker/Sportswriter (hey, I made it! Now a little more money would be nice ;-) )
Quote: "Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore" - Andre Gide
The Best Fantasy Football Advice You Can Give: Play against the stiffest competition you can find. Put it this way - there is one league I've been playing in for years, and I clean up almost every year. The owners aren't all fantasy geeks, but they are fun group to play with. In my own league (www.hoserleague.ca) I have done my best to invite the very best owners from the cross section of leagues I have played in. I occasionally win this league, but more importantly, year after year I learn from these guys, and they make me a better player every year.
Parting thoughts: Thanks Cathy and Jeff, for the opportunity. I'm excited to be a part of the Footballguys team.
