Week 3: at Cleveland Browns

All WR vs CLE

FBG says: Neutral matchup. Sam Darnold is showing plenty of strong long-term NFL traits. He's exhibiting great mobility, moving and stretching the pocket - someday, he'll use this skill to open his receivers up downfield. And from a mental standpoint, he's showing smarts and polish more often than not on his shorter throws. Still, he's very much a work in progress. Darnold, the youngest starting quarterback of the Super Bowl era, hasn't shown much confidence or drive when forced to make a play. Last week, he blew a sure touchdown by overthrowing a wide-open Quincy Enunwa into the stands, then threw short of the end zone in the final 10 seconds of an 8-point game (with no timeouts). His poise and decision-making are a liability right now, dragging down the values of downfield threats Robby Anderson and Terrelle Pryor. It's encouraging, though, to see Enunwa and Pryor making plays. Enunwa, an oversized slot man with great physicality, is Darnold's first read on a lot of his underneath stuff. And Pryor keeps making splashes on instinct; he's caught 7 balls for 133 yards as a Jet, seemingly supplanting Anderson as the Jets' top downfield threat. The Cleveland pass defense is coming around, slowly but surely. There's still inconsistency, but some of the assembled pieces are looking strong. Rookie cornerback Denzel Ward was a Week 1 terror, intercepting Ben Roethlisberger twice and making great open-field tackles to prevent long gains. Last Sunday, he helped corral Michael Thomas, who caught 12 balls and 2 touchdowns but managed just 89 yards. Of course, the touchdowns were back-breakers, ultimately costing the Browns the game. Thomas scored the first on a quick slant, slipping through a weak tackle attempt by cornerback Terrance Mitchell, then went over Ward (who never looked for the ball) for an easy second one. Slot man Briean Boddy-Calhoun looks like a weekly liability inside, too. Still, with Myles Garrett showing well in Year 2, there are brighter days ahead for this ascending secondary. They're far from a defense to avoid in fantasy, but look poised to create a few difficult days for quarterbacks as the year wears on.
