Week 8: vs Houston Texans

Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. Jake Locker is 'expected' to start this game according to comments from head coach Ken Whisenhunt on Monday, but his status is pending Locker's ability to practice later in the week. If his sore thumb doesn't get aggravated, Locker could return to action for the Titans in this game. If he misses time, though, backup Charlie Whitehurst (59/98 for 764 yards passing, five TDs and two interceptions thrown over his four appearances this year) will be under center again. We're not sure a rusty Locker would be an upgrade in this game - anyways, stay tuned to Footballguys.com's Players in the News this week as the starting quarterback for this one is up in the air as of midweek. The Texans' pass D is ranked 26th in the NFL averaging 268.7 net yards allowed per game, with 13 passing scores allowed vs. six interceptions (tied for 14th in the NFL) and 13 sacks (tied-19th) generated to date. The sub-par secondary has allowed three TDs with zero interceptions to Ben Roethlisberger (24/34 for 252 net yards, with three sacks taken for -16 yards) and three TDs with one interception to Andrew Luck (25/44 for 363 net passing yards, with three sacks taken for -7 yards). J.J. Watt can't both rush the passer and cover receivers - the secondary isn't doing a very good job of covering receivers of late, either. Advantage, whichever quarterback starts for Tennessee.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 5 vs CLE (13 / 21 / 194 / 2 / 0 pass, 2 / -1 / 0 rush)

Unsurprisingly, the Titans didn't focus on the run when Whitehurst came in to replace Locker. They appear to be focused on throwing the ball a lot regardless of who is under center. Whitehurst repaid that fate in him with a quick touchdown pass to Kendall Wright. The throw wasn't perfect, but Wright was wide open in the back of the end zone and made a good adjustment on the ball when Whitehurst lofted it over the underneath coverage. Whitehurst's first two completions in this game went for touchdowns. To start his next drive, the veteran quarterback found a wide open Justin Hunter down the field for a huge touchdown reception. That was his final throw of the first half, but he started the second half with a similar pass. Whitehurst found Nate Washington down the sideline for what should have been a huge play, but Washington couldn't complete the catch. That was Whitehurst's best play of the second half as he was never able to sustain drives. He wasn't helped by the coaching staff on the sideline, who neglected the run and made it easy for the defense to work against an unbalanced offense.

2014 Week 6 vs JAX (17 / 28 / 233 / 0 / 0 pass, 2 / 1 / 0 rush)

With quarterbacks, we typically say a quarterback is ruining an offense when he throws interceptions. Whitehurst wasn't throwing interceptions early on in this game, but he was definitely ruining the offense. His play from the pocket was awful as he appeared to be unaware and gun-shy whenever the slightest bit of pressure was felt. Whitehurst primarily relied on checking the ball down before the pass rush ever had a chance to get to him, but that often neutralized the routes his receivers were running down the field.

2014 Week 7 vs WAS (17 / 26 / 160 / 2 / 1 pass, 2 / 10 / 0 rush)

Charlie Whitehurst simply isn't a starting caliber quarterback. That has become more apparent every week that he has played. He missed receivers on a regular basis and made poor decisions from the pocket before throwing his only interception of the game to Bashaud Breeland in the second quarter. Breeland was five yards behind Delanie Walker, Whitehurst's intended receiver, but the ball never went near Walker and went straight to the defensive back. Whitehurst threw two touchdown passes, but he left many more plays on the field.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger an option at QB? (Tue Oct 21, 12:27 PM) - Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker (thumb) will start at quarterback when he's healthy, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt. QB Charlie Whitehurst has filled in for Locker twice this year, but buzz continues to mount for QB Zach Mettenberger, the team's sixth-round draft pick this year. Were trying to get him better as we go, knowing with the way its gone for us at quarterback this year that's something that could happen at any time, Whisenhunt said. Whisenhunt doesn't sound concerned about playing Mettenberger too soon, either.

Our View: The rookie has a rocket for a right arm...but he throws with little control. He also struggles when under duress--even a little bit of pressure will throw his game off. He's a big pocket passer but lacks the athleticism to keep plays alive with his feet.

Titans | Jake Locker expected back in Week 8 (Sun Oct 19, 09:05 PM) - Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker (hand) is expected to be back in Week 8. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said Sunday, Oct. 19, that Locker's hand was still sore this week. QB Charlie Whitehurst started in his absence in Week 7 against the Washington Redskins.

Our View: Locker will face the Texans. He hasn't shown enough this year to merit a pre-emptive pickup, but it could help Justin Hunter.

Titans | Jake Locker questionable (Fri Oct 17, 04:07 PM) - Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker (thumb) was limited in practice Friday, Oct. 17, and is listed as questionable for Week 7 against the Washington Redskins. Locker did very little during individual drills Friday, with QB Charlie Whitehurst taking the bulk of the repetitions. Locker has already missed two starts this year, and all signs are pointing to him missing another this weekend. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said a decision won't be made on Locker until Sunday, Oct. 19.

Titans | Charlie Whitehurst seeing first-team reps (Fri Oct 17, 02:07 PM) - Tennessee Titans QB Charlie Whitehurst saw the bulk of first-team repetitions in practice Friday, Oct. 17.

Our View: Whitehurst is only a desperation play this week, but one with a high ceiling because of the matchup against the barely competent Washington pass defense.
