Recent Game Summaries

2015 Week 15 vs HOU (2 / 2 / 9 / 0 rec)

Playing in just 10 snaps, much of which came with the Colts spreading the field in the fourth quarter (and Phillip Dorsett exiting with an ankle injury), Whalen was ineffective in this one. Whalen's second catch, which came late in the fourth quarter, took away a golden opportunity for the team to tie or win the game. Whalen suffered a rib injury on the hit, and was placed on injured reserve on Monday.

2015 Week 14 vs JAX (0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

With Phillip Dorsett back in the mix, Whalen saw his role diminish, with just eight snaps and zero targets on Sunday. Once a deep-league waiver-wire add, Whalen should be unrostered at this point in the season.

2015 Week 13 vs PIT (6 / 2 / 9 / 0 rec)

Despite leading the team's receivers in targets, Whalen could only produce nine yards on Sunday, a reminder of how limited he is as a receiver. Of course, Matt Hasselbeck's complete meltdown didn't help, but Whalen's weak attempt at one contested catch (which would have resulted in a first down) directly led to a tipped ball and Hasselbeck's second interception. Despite going up against a vulnerable secondary that should have resulted in a high amount of three and four-receiver sets, Whalen saw the field for just 21 snaps on Sunday.

2015 Week 12 vs TB (0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Fan-favorite Griff Whalen once again matched Andre Johnson in routes run, but his lone catch of the day was negated by offsetting penalties. The catch (and first down) would have counted if not for Whalen fumbling at the end, resulting in an eventual facemask on Indianapolis. Regardless, Whalen's production is going to be inconsistent at best as the fourth receiver in Indianapolis' offense.

2015 Week 11 vs ATL (3 / 2 / 20 / 0 rec)

While Whalen doesn't have the same chemistry with Matt Hasselbeck as he does Andrew Luck, he was able to grab a couple third-down receptions again on Sunday. Still, his work will be limited as long as the team continues to rely on tight-end heavy formations. Whalen played just 14 snaps on Sunday.

2015 Week 9 vs DEN (6 / 5 / 73 / 0 rec)

The Colts have been looking for a possession receiver that Luck could trust ever since Reggie Wayne went down with an injury back in 2013. Andre Johnson was supposed to fill that role, but he's been a huge disappointment for Indianapolis. Meanwhile, Griff Whalen continues to make big plays when the team needs them. Whalen didn't dominate the Broncos, but he made several critical plays that helped the Colts move the ball on key possessions. The first was a 38-yard out-and-up, as Whalen took advantage of a matchup with a linebacker to get plenty of separation down the left sideline. The other was a key 18-yard post on the game's final drive, as Luck converted a 3rd-and-10 to keep the drive alive. Whalen's role isn't going to be as big against teams with lesser corners on the outside, as T.Y. Hilton and Donte Moncrief will eat up targets, but with Chudzinski's focus on the middle of the field and Phillip Dorsett out, Whalen could see a couple more weeks of high usage.

2015 Week 8 vs CAR (5 / 5 / 48 / 0 rec)

With rookie Phillip Dorsett out with an injury, Whalen made a few big receptions as a possession receiver during the Colts' fourth-quarter, no-huddle rally on Monday. He did seem to lose the game for Indianapolis with a diving catch attempt on fourth down late in the game, where the ball appeared to hit the ground. But, the play was ruled a catch on the field, and there was not enough to overturn the call. It was the second-most receiving yards of Whalen's career, and it's not likely to continue, even with Dorsett out for a few more weeks.

2015 Week 6 vs NE (3 / 2 / 30 / 1 rec)

Whalen got four snaps on Sunday, but took advantage with an 18-yard touchdown pass as the Colts tried to make a quick comeback attempt. Whalen won't play over the top four receivers, however, and future production isn't likely.
