News you need to know
From Mark Wimer's Monday injury report (Mon Oct 20): is scheduled for an MRI on his elbow. We should have more info on it later this week.
From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Oct 20): Wayne's down week isn't as scary when you consider that he was uncomfortable after coming down hard on his elbow, but that elbow injury could be an issue that causes him to miss at least a week or two of action.
General News (Fri Oct 24): is out for this weekend's game.
General News (Thu Oct 23): did not practice on Thursday.
General News (Wed Oct 22): did not practice on Wednesday.
General News (Tue Oct 21): Wayne's elbow injury isn't believed to be serious, but it could cause him to miss a game or two, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Head coach Chuck Pagano hasn't revealed the results of Wayne's MRI exams, however. Wayne said his injury wasn't serious after the Week 7 win. He finished the game against the Cincinnati Bengals with just four catches for 15 yards, and he had two drops.
Week 8: at Pittsburgh Steelers
Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. Andrew Luck has thrown for 312 yards or more in six out of seven games this year, and has at least two TDs in six out of seven games (with three or more in four of seven). Start him every week and smile. T.Y. Hilton has gone crazy over the past two weeks, with nine targets for 7/107/0 receiving vs. Cincinnati last week and nine for 9/223/1 receiving at Houston two weeks ago. Dwayne Allen has three catches per game over the past two contests (six for 3/52/1 last week; seven for 3/49/0 two weeks back) and is getting enough opportunities to post even more production. Ahmad Bradshaw has caught a TD in each of the last two games (six for 3/25/1 two weeks ago and three for 3/36/1 last week). Reggie Wayne has hit a dry page (eight for 4/15/0 vs. Cincinnati last week; nine for 4/35/0 at Houston two weeks ago), but otherwise the Colts' passing attack is going great guns entering week 8. The Steelers' pass D is ranked 13th in the NFL averaging 230.9 net yards allowed per game, with 10 passing scores given out vs. four interceptions (tied for 18th in the NFL) and 10 sacks (tied for 23rd) generated to date. Ryan Fitzpatrick hit them for 21/32 yielding 261 net passing yards, two TDs and one interception last week (with one sack taken for -1 yard), while Brian Hoyer was also sacked just once for -7 yards two weeks back (8/17 for 210 yards passing, one TD and zero interceptions). An outstanding passing attack takes on a so-so pass D in this one - advantage, Indianapolis.
Recent Stats and Projections
Recent Game Summaries
2014 Week 5 vs BAL (12 / 7 / 77 / 0 rec)
Tying with T.Y. Hilton in targets, Wayne was heavily targeted on third down by Andrew Luck, and was largely successful. Wayne didn't have a great game, with a rare drop in the end zone and an offensive pass interference penalty taking a Hilton touchdown off the board, but he's Luck's safety blanket, and that was on display once again Sunday.
2014 Week 6 vs HOU (9 / 4 / 35 / 0 rec)
Wayne was limited to short, quick passes for first downs on Thursday, a critical part of the real-life offense, but not so beneficial for fantasy owners. He had one deep pass over the middle overturned in the fourth quarter, which would have extended a drive for Indianapolis. Wayne is still Luck's security blanket, but with Hilton breaking out and the other young weapons, the Colts quarterback doesn't need his blanket quite as often as he used to.
2014 Week 7 vs CIN (8 / 4 / 15 / 0 rec)
It was a rough day for Wayne, who needed two screens in the fourth quarter to get his customary three catches. Wayne hurt his elbow early in the game, but was able to return. But, it seemed the injury may have affected him, and he struggled through the rest of the game. It could possibly cost him Week 8, pending results of an MRI. Wayne dropped at least two passes, and he's averaged less than 10 yards per catch in both of the last two games. He's due for a big game soon, but if he's hurting at all, Luck has other weapons to go to.
Latest NewsColts | Reggie Wayne won't play (Fri Oct 24, 01:00 PM) - Indianapolis Colts WR Reggie Wayne (elbow) has officially been ruled out for Week 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Our View: The Colts did not commit to Donte Moncrief or Hakeem Nicks as the replacement for Wayne, but Moncrief looks much more capable than Nicks and he's the pickup if you want to try to take advantage of this.
link to story Colts | Reggie Wayne sitting (Thu Oct 23, 12:01 PM) - Indianapolis Colts WR Reggie Wayne (elbow) is not participating in practice Thursday, Oct. 23. Our View: This is two days in a row, so not a good look for Wayne. The team hasn't shared Monday's MRI results, but it looks like Wayne could miss a game or two, though overall it doesn't seem serious.
link to story Colts | Reggie Wayne misses practice (Wed Oct 22, 04:19 PM) - Indianapolis Colts WR Reggie Wayne (elbow) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 22. Our View: Wayne's playing status for Week 8 is up in the air. We could see a few more targets for rookie Donte Moncrief if Wayne is out.
link to story Colts | Reggie Wayne could miss a game or two (Tue Oct 21, 12:45 PM) - Updating previous reports, Indianapolis Colts WR Reggie Wayne's (elbow) injury isn't believed to be serious, but it could cause him to miss a game or two, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Head coach Chuck Pagano hasn't revealed the results of Wayne's MRI exams, however. Wayne said his injury wasn't serious after the Week 7 win. He finished the game against the Cincinnati Bengals with just four catches for 15 yards, and he had two drops. WR Hakeem Nicks could receive a heavier workload if Wayne needs some time to heal from his injury. Nicks had zero catches on one target against the Bengals after catching just two passes for 18 yards the previous week. Our View: We're way more excited about rookie Donte Moncrief than we are Nicks. With Wayne out, we could see Moncrief get a real opportunity to impress in one of the league's more robust passing games. He's a big target who can make plays above the rim because of his size, wingspan and leaping ability. Fantasy owners in deeper leagues need to take a look at Moncrief.
link to story Colts | Reggie Wayne could miss time (Tue Oct 21, 10:22 AM) - Updating previous reports, Indianapolis Colts WR Reggie Wayne (elbow) could miss time with his elbow injury. Beat writer Stephen Holder tweeted that he isn't receiving good vibes from the situation, but it doesn't sound major. Our View: Keep an eye on this situation, and run to get Donte Moncrief in deeper leagues. The team is receiving multiple opinions on the injury.
