J.J. Watt underwent back surgery on July 20th. His expected return has been reported as everything from 6 weeks to more than 10 weeks, meaning that his early-season status is very much unclear. Even if Watt returns quickly, this is an injury that often limits effectiveness. This is a situation to monitor closely.

J.J. Watt has been far and away the best defensive end in the game in all but the most obscure IDP scoring settings. While he didn't quite match his 2014 numbers, he came very close. He only missed his previous mark by three sacks and a few solo tackles. Watt is also sometimes used in red zone packages as a tight end, which only adds to his appeal. Jadeveon Clowney is finally rounding into form after being more than a year removed from microfracture surgery. With Clowney frequently setting the edge on the other side, and most of the defense intact from last year, Watt could continue to put up the fantastic numbers to which owners have been accustomed. On 7/21, news broke that Watt had a back surgery, most likely a microdiscectomy procedure. The recovery time for this procedure will put him right against the start of the regular season. Other players who have had this procedure tend to take time to round into form post recovery. We may see Watt get off to a slow start, but we can be reasonably confident that he will rebound to be impactful for his owners this year. (August 11)

Texans | J.J. Watt progressing, status still unclear (Fri Aug 19, 11:42 AM) - Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) has head coach Bill O'Brien encouraged by Watt's progress from back surgery. However, O'Brien is still unsure about Watt's availability for the first two games of the season.

Our View: Chicago and Kansas City would be the beneficiaries of Watt's absence. He could also take a game or two to ramp up after returning from back surgery, New England (sans Tom Brady) and Tennessee could get a little easier matchup in Weeks 3 and 4. We would still count on Watt to look like himself pretty quickly after his return.
